BECK HAS BIG DAY; QUAKERS SHAKE STRUTHERS

SALEM, OH- Darius Beck came to ballpark and meant business on Saturday, tallying four hits and leading Salem to a 14-4 win over Struthers. Beck singled in the third, singled in the third, singled in the fourth, and singled in the sixth.

The Quakers earned the year’s third victory despite allowing Struthers to score three runs in the third inning. Struthers batters contributing to the big inning included Day and Leonard, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Salem started the party in the first inning when Gavin Wilms singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.  After falling behind 3-1, the Quakers pulled away for good with nine runs in the third inning. In the third Wilms doubled, scoring one run, Corey Riesen grounded out, scoring one run, Brock Young singled, scoring one run, Carson Rhodes drew a walk, scoring another, Blaize Exline doubled, scoring two runs, Beck singled, scoring one run, Wilms drew a walk, scoring one run, and Riesen drew a walk, scoring another.

Carson Rhodes took the win for Salem. The freshman righty allowed four hits and four runs over six innings, striking out 11.

Leonard was on the hill for Struthers. Leonard went two and a third innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out one. Calcello threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

The Quakers totaled 15 hits. BeckWilms, and Lane Rhodes each racked up multiple hits for Salem Quakers VarsityBeck led the team with four hits in five at-bats.

Pezzone went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Struthers in hits and took home the Wildcat half of the Baird Brothers Player of the Game. Struthers was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error.
