BIG TEST NEXT FOR HUBBARD

HUBBARD, Ohio

After a scoreless first inning of play, the Hubbard Lady Eagles (14-9) struck big in the bottom of the second inning in their sectional final matchup against the Southeast Pirates (7-14).

Hubbard’s Phoebe Rusnak would start the inning off with a single up the middle. An error by Southeast would then allow Emily Filicky to reach and put two runners on for Isabella O’Brien. The smooth swinging freshman would then poke one down the right field line for a bases clearing double.

Following a strikeout by Kailah Gregory, the Lady Eagles would then hit back-to-back-to-back singles to bring O’Brien home and again put two runners on with a big hitter coming to the plate.

The aforementioned big hitter for the Eagles was junior Haley Croyle. Croyle, an Akron softball commit, delivered with a 2 RBI double off the left centerfield fence. Senior Sydney Bowser would come up big with a line drive single through the 6-5 gap to bring across their 6th and 7th runs for the inning.

On pace for a whitewash effort, the Hubbard scoring would continue but at a much slower rate. The Lady Eagles would plate a single run a piece in the 3rd, 4th, and 6th innings.

Defensively, Hubbard was led by the talented arm of O’Brien. The righty would strike out 17 batters in her 7 innings of work on the day. Her only mistake on the day proved to be a big one, allowing a 3-run homerun off the bat of Southeast’s Cecilia Stephens. Southeast would also bring across one in the 7th, still coming up short 10-4.
