BROOKFIELD EARNS A PIECE OF THE FIRST PLACE SPOT

BROOKFIELD OH- A lot was on the line for both teams on Monday night as Brookfield welcomed in Garfield in a MVAC showdown.  The Lady G-Men came in to the game undefeated overall, and in the conference. The Warriors were right behind them in the standings with just one loss inside the league.  A win for Brookfield would make it a four team log jam at the top with 1 loss.

A competitive first frame saw the Warriors hold a two point lead. The most important factor though in the first frame was that Brookfield was able to get Garfield leading scorer Laura McCoy in foul trouble.  She picked up her third personal before the end of the first. Garfield coach Aaron Gilbert had no choice to survive the second quarter with her on the bench. As expected Garfield struggled offensively in the frame. They were outscored 16-9 by the Warriors leading to a 30-21 deficit at the break. McCoy’s return in the third definitely provided a spark to Garfield as they crept closer and closer. However, the Warriors were too good to let them take control of the game. Some big free throws down the line extended the Warriors lead down the stretch and let them come away with a 53-44 win.

Sophia Hook led the Warriors with a mighty performance scoring 23 points and being the only Warrior in double figures. Cailey Wellman still had a good showing with 9 points and 14 rebounds.  Katie Logan added 5 points, and 6 assists.  Hook added 5 steals to her total on defense.

Garfield was led by a gritty game from Madeline Shirkey with 15 points.  McCoy was able to finiss with 11 points for the G-Men.  Mandy Cardinal was right behind them with 9 points.

Brookfield stays at home on Thursday as they host Campbell and Garfield stays on the road traveling to LaBrae on Thursday.
