CANFIELD SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH MIKE KERNAN 3-13-25
By Ty Bartell
CANFIELD OH- It has been quite the last 12 months for Canfield Cardinals softball skipper Michael Kernan. The longtime softball mind is back for another season at the helm in Cardinal country, fresh off a Division II State Championship with plenty of excitement surrounding the program! Not the only accomplishment for Coach Kernan, as his name now joins the illustrious list of coaches that have been honored in The Hall of Fame, immortalizing his softball legacy forever!
Now with seven divisions this year, The Cardinals will be focused on repeating the magical run from a year ago. With plenty of players on the roster that have state title experience, led by senior middle infielders Marina Koenig at shortstop and Sydney Lutz at second base, The Cardinals look to follow their voice in the dugout and on the field. Other key returners include one of the best catchers in the country, Leah Figueroa behind the dish, the super athlete Jenna Triveri will lock down center field and the canon of Sami Economous will be back in play at third base.
The biggest question mark for Canfield this year will come in the circle. With the graduation of Malena Toth, now playing at Buffalo University, Canfield has a handful of girls in the mix looking for some time on the rubber. Coach Kernan sees it as an exciting opportunity that is going to figure itself out as the season goes along, but the hunger and the want to achieve great things is a staple of the pitchers Canfield will be playing this year.
Competing in one of, if not, the best softball conference in the state of Ohio, The All American Conference (AAC). Canfield will look to cut their teeth on the great competition The AAC provides, while testing themselves with some quality non-conference opponents such asChampion, Louisville, West Branch, Ursuline and Green to name a few. The Cards will open the season on Saturday, March 22nd with a 1 p.m. slated first pitch against The Minerva Lions.
