EDGEWOOD WARRIORS BASEBALL COACHES CORNER JEFF BARGER

East Palestine, OH-Every coach strives to get their players to play up to their potential and the Edgewood Warriors 4th year head coach Jeff Barger did just that. With a 2022 season that resulted in a final record of 18-5 and a CVC conference championship coach Barger now has his sights set on continuing further into the OHSAA tournament after falling to Lakeview in the first round.

Coach Barger dives into losing team leaders and contributors from the class of 2022 but returning 8 of 9 starters from last year’s team including the CVC player of the year Logan Kray who finished with an in-conference ERA of 0. Coach also talks about how the addition of some special freshman this year and underclassman stepping up will change the look of the team this year. The roles of each player will serve as the biggest difference for the Warriors team this year.  Coach says that the Edgewood Warriors will live by the mantras of “know your role and do your job” and trying to go 1-0 in every situation.

COACHES CORNER ST. JOHN HERALDS ALVIN RODRIGUEZ

East Palestine, OH- The stresses and expectations of being a head coach at any school are expected by those who answer the call. Those pressures are often increased when the head coach is returning to the school they graduated from. St. John’s Alvin Rodriguez, a 2004 St. John graduate, returns for his third year as the Heralds skipper. After a successful 2022 season that included a 10-10 record and sectional championship he is looking to build and continue the success at Ashtabula county’s smallest school.

With a nice mix of youth and experience the Heralds will try to advance further into the OHSAA tournament than last year after their season ended with a loss to Bristol. The Heralds also have the new challenge of chasing after a conference title as they become the newest member of the NAC. Increased numbers in participation have Rodriguez excited about the 2023 season with 18 players on the roster this year being a huge jump from the 11 that suited up for the 2022 season.

WEEK 4 BASEBALL POWER 20

East Palestine, OH- No power rankings have garnered more celebration or criticisms this year than the Power 20 right here on YSN. The week of 4/30/23 was no different with tons of jumps and drops after the points were computed for all the teams under the YSN umbrella. Labrae finds themselves as the new top dog with their impressive 16-4 record and opponents wins at almost 100. Other notable movements include Hoban and Lakeview moving into the “Big Logo” 3 after huge wins over accomplished opponents in the previous week.

The formula used for the Power 20 is as follows:

  • +1 point for each win
  • -1 point for each loss
  • Each of the opponents a team has beat has their wins tallied and the total is multiplied by 0.5
  • Opponents’ wins are only counted once so beating the same team twice does not double your opponent’s win total
  • +0.25 points for run rule victories
  • -0.25 points for run rule losses
  • +1 point for leading the conference/division
  • Division bonus applied to each win and added to total
    • Division 1 = 4 points
    • Division 2 = 3 points
    • Division 3 = 2 points
    • Division 4 = 1 Point
  • Tie Breakers= Head to Head, most opponents wins

FALCONS AVENGE EARLY SEASON LOSS

By Michael Wolfgang

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – In a matchup of teams who are very evenly matched record wise, Austintown Fitch never trailed in their Friday night matchup against South Range as they put away the Raiders 8-2.

Rocco DiFlorio made the presence of the Fitch offense felt right out of the gate when he grounded out to bring a run home. After Fitch scored one run in the bottom of the third, the action packed inning in the game for the Falcons was the bottom of the fourth as they put four runs on the board with Brady Loew, Drew Kaschak, and Jackson Cheeks, all driving in runs in the frame.

The hot bat for Fitch was Hayden Warmouth who had a 2-for-3 day at the dish and Cheeks was the hot man in the RBI department with three. The victorious pitcher was Carter Owens of Fitch. The reliable righty gave his team six and two-thirds innings of work, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out six batters.

Next for Fitch is a quick turnaround to take the home field against a surging Hubbard team at noon on Saturday. Fitch will look to make it six wins in a row and Hubbard will look to start a new winning streak of their own.
