**1st Quarter:**
The game started with both teams struggling to break the deadlock, with the score remaining 0-0. However, Southern Local quickly shifted the momentum in their favor with a 3-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a successful 2-point conversion rush. This put Southern Local ahead 8-0. McDonald received the kickoff and managed to drive down the field, culminating in a 40-yard passing touchdown from Kyle Puckett to Casey Miller. Unfortunately for McDonald, the point-after attempt was missed, leaving the score at 8-6 in favor of Southern Local at the end of the first quarter.

**2nd Quarter:**
The second quarter witnessed back-and-forth action, with both teams displaying strong defensive efforts. McDonald’s Drew Zajack scored a 5-yard rushing touchdown, but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful. Southern Local responded with a 5-yard rushing touchdown of their own by Jamar Allen, but once again, the two-point conversion was not converted. The half ended with a score of 14-12 in favor of Southern Local.

**3rd Quarter:**
McDonald came out strong in the third quarter, with Drew Zajack finding the end zone once again on a 7-yard rushing touchdown. However, the two-point conversion attempt was once again unsuccessful. McDonald managed to maintain possession of the ball and run out the clock, securing their hard-fought victory with a final score of 25-22.

The game was a testament to the resilience and determination of both teams, as they battled through touchdowns, conversions, interceptions, and fumbles. Despite the ups and downs, the McDonald Blue Devils managed to emerge victorious in a thrilling contest against the Southern Local Indians, with a final score of 25-22.

TIMLIIN TALLIES TWO TDs; RED DEVILS ROLL

* CONTRIBUTED BY NATE DICROSS

CAMPBELL, OH –    Friday night lights returned to the valley as Campbell played host to the Knights of Aquinas. From the first kickoff, this one was all Red Devils as they look to grab their first winning season since 2012. Campbell was able to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, aided by the powerful big men, Jordan Gore and Matt Koziorynsky. The blocking up front opened things up for an opening drive touchdown as Kevin Timlin carried one in from 6 yards out.

That might have wrapped up the scoring for the first quarter, but the Red Devils still had more in the tank. It was the junior Timlin again, early in the 2nd quarter, who found the end zone. This time, playing on the other side of the ball, Timlin would make a great read and an even better break on the ball as he earned the quick pick 6 and put the Red Devils up 14-0 after the PAT.

Campbell would follow up with touchdown runs from Malik Young and Mihali Koullias. In between, Matt Koziorynsky forced his way through the offensive line of the Knights and earned two more points with a tackle in the backfield for a safety. Campbell took a 30-0 lead into halftime and wouldn’t look back.

With a running clock in the 2nd half, the Campbell offense wouldn’t tack on any additional points, but the defense continued to hold their own and earned a shutout on the night. Campbell will travel to Lowellville next and look to keep things rolling against a tough Rockets team.

HOBAN IMPRESSES AT THE HOF

CANTON, OH-  Archbishop Hoban was on a mission in their 2023 season opener against Frederick Douglass, the reigning Class 5A high school state champion from Kentucky. The Knights demonstrated their mettle with a commanding 45-6 victory, leaving no doubt about their capabilities.

Even without star running back Lamar Sperling, who earned the prestigious title of Ohio Mr. Football as a senior and has since moved on to play for the University at Buffalo, the Hoban offense proved its explosiveness. This victory highlighted several key aspects for the Knights.

The Knights’ resilience was evident as they triumphed at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, a venue that had posed challenges for them in the past.  However, the Knights seemed to have exorcized those demons this year.  Their dominant performance silenced doubts, especially since this stadium had been the site of their previous Division II state championship losses in 2022 and 2021.

Hoban’s talent level was on full display, reaffirming their potential to contend for their sixth state title under the guidance of their 11th-year head coach, Tim Tyrrell.

Early in the game, Hoban seized control, establishing a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and further extending it to 38-0 by halftime.

Junior Tylan Boykin, making his debut as the starting varsity quarterback, wasted no time in making an impact. On Hoban’s first offensive play, Boykin connected with senior wideout Parker Falkenstein for a 46-yard touchdown pass, setting the tone for their commanding display.  The Hoban passing game would account for 84 yards through the air and 155 yards on the ground attack while racking up a total of 13 first-downs along the way.

Caleb Jones led the offensive charge with 93 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. He also exhibited his versatility by catching two passes for 35 yards, including a remarkable one-handed reception. Stepping into Sperling’s role, Jones showcased his readiness and skill.  Jones would finish the game with 16 carries for 82 yards and three scores.

Hoban’s defense was equally potent, starting with a three-and-out and culminating in a key interception by senior safety Ty Campbell. The turnover provided excellent field position, enabling Hoban’s offensive onslaught.  Hoban’s tenacious defense continued to shine, recovering a fumble and creating scoring opportunities. Feister capitalized on this turnover with a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, further solidifying Hoban’s dominance.

Jones’ multi-dimensional performance included a trio of first-half touchdown runs (6, 3, and 14 yards), with a 40-yard rush that set up freshman running back Brayton Feister’s 11-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

While Frederick Douglass managed to break Hoban’s shutout with a late rushing touchdown, the Knights had already demonstrated their superiority in a resounding 45-6 victory.
