CAT MAN

STRUTHERS, OH- It’s always impressive to sit down and talk with a multi-sport athlete when we have the chance.  Usually, the conversation consists of how they can shift their attention from sport to sport, season to season, and still have time for themselves.

So, you can imagine how many questions we had for Struthers Junior, Chaz Ekoniak.

Chaz not only fits the bill as a dual-sport athlete but does them in the same season.  You see, Chaz lights up the links throughout the week as one of the area’s standout golfers, and then the Wildcats hit the “Cat Signal” on Fridays where Ekoniak sheds the slacks and clubs for a helmet and pads to be an elite wide receiver on the field for the Wildcats.

All of that, and Chaz still has time to have over a 3.9 GPA when he’s not disguised as the Struthers Athletics hero.

We had a chance to sit down with the busiest man in Youngstown after both seasons concluded and discuss the challenges, the thrills, and what’s to come for Struthers’ very own Dark Knight in this Player Profile: Cat Man.

LOCAL SPORTS FANATICS TO SETTLE IN THE BUNKER

BOARDMAN, OH- If you’re a golfer, you’ve spent the better part of your game trying to stay OUT of the bunker.  However, coming this November, sports fans will be posting up for a spot to get in one.  The Bunker, located in the Southern Park Mall in Boardman, will surely be the place to go for good times, and to keep your golf game on-point over the winter months in Northeast Ohio.

Owner Jonah Karzmer has spent the last two years creating reality out of his dream in his hometown.  “We kind of had a vision of an indoor golf center and a combined restaurant with Bogey’s,” says Karzmer.  The Bunker will be located where Jillian’s used to reside- on the backside of the mall, across from the new DeBartolo Commons area.

The facility includes a multitude of golf and sports simulators for the entire family to enjoy, and can be rented out hourly by customers a few days in advance, or by members as far as a month prior to your arrival.  The space also includes a family-friendly area to dine and watch sports without having to pick up the clubs if you’re just looking for a bite to eat.  The local favorite “Bogey’s” will be teaming up with The Bunker to produce “Double Bogey’s” and provide some hole-in-one service included with their stellar food to accompany it.

Leagues will also be formed by Golf Pro, Danny Phillips, and from his estimation will attract golfers of all different handicaps to enjoy the game.  “It’s something the whole family can do, you don’t even need to own golf clubs,” says Phillips.

The Bunker is set to open in mid-November to the public.

BEAVER LOCAL PREPS TO DEFEND TITLES

Perfection is defined in the dictionary as the condition, state, or quality of being free as possible from all flaws or defects.  Someone forgot to tell Webster perfection could also be defined by watching the Beaver Local Golf team. The Beavers are coming off a 2020 campaign that saw them achieve an undefeated regular season, Buckeye 8 Conference Championship, and an OVAC Championship.

Flip the calendar to 2021, the Beavers are still undefeated and are full throttle ahead looking to repeat last year’s success.  The team currently sits in second place of the Buckeye 8 Conference Tournament after first-round play concluded on Friday.  The Beavers’ team total of 327 sits in second place behind leader St. Clairsville who shot 309 as a team.  Luke Eyster led the charge with a team-best 75.  The Beavers’ senior currently tied at the top of the individual leaderboard,  is also the reigning 2020 Buckeye 8 Tournament Medalist.  Skylar Pappas contributed with a solid 78 helping the Beavers solidify their status on the leaderboard.   Aiden Pilarcik and Mike McKenzie each carded 87 respectively for the Red and White.   The top 6 finishers of the second round will earn All Buckeye 8 First Team Honors which Beaver Local could stand to land multiple players.

The second-round action of the tournament is slated for Tuesday at Belmont Pines in St. Clairsville.  The Red and White will continue their pursuit of perfection later this week taking to their show across state lines visiting Oak Glen on Thursday.
