BLUE DEVILS BLAST IN TO NEXT ROUND

MCDONALD OH- McDonald has high hopes for tournament time.  The Blue Devils are the 4 seed in the Northeast Division IV district.  They find themselves in the Lisbon bracket. They got their run to a district championship started on Wednesday night with a quick sweep of East Canton.  (25-11 25-4 25-7)

Maria Rasile led the Blue Devils with 11 kills. She also had 8 assists, and 6 digs.  She contributed 7 service aces as well.  Gianna Constantino had the team lead in assists with 13. She grabbed 5 kills and 5 digs to add on to her stat line.  Megan Zajack had 7 aces, and led the team in service points with 21.

McDonald advances to the sectional final on Saturday against the Youngstown Academy for Urban Scholars.  That game is set to begin at 6:00.

 

INDIANS CRUISE BY CHANEY

GIRARD OH- Girard was voted the top seed in their district this season after an impressive regular season. As the calendar turns in to tournament time the Indians have to go earn that top seed. They got their journey started with a quick sweep of Chaney in the sectional semifinals. (25-7 25-3 25-7)

 

Lauren Pallone led the Girard attack with 10 kills.  Bree Latell shared that lead by chipping in 10 kills herself.  Allison Durkin continued to set her hitters up for success totaling in 26 assists. Bailey Walters had a pair of digs for the defense.  She also served up 5 aces for the Indians.

Girard advances to the sectional championship in the Division II Jefferson bracket. They’ll play NE8 for Niles on Thursday at 5:00 in Girard.

LAKEVIEW CELEBRATES FINAL GAME ON HOME COURT

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview was voted as the four seed in the OHSAA Division 3 Northeast district. In a tough bracket full of state ranked teams, momentum is important. Lakeview took plenty of momentum forward as they celebrated their final game on their home floor with a sweep to move on to the next round. (25-6 25-8 25-11)

Tara Lytle did her thing in the middle leading the way with 16 kills.  Maggie Pavlansky spent her last night setting in the Lakeview gym leading the Bulldogs with 18 assists. Maddie Bayus had a big final home game as well. Not only did she lead the team in digs with 10, but she also celebrated her 1000th career dig on the court.  Reagan Price led the team in two categories with 2 blocks and 4 aces.

Lakeview moves on to the sectional final on Thursday as they’ll take on NE8 rival Poland for the third time this season. They will be the second game of the night in Crestview.  First serve is set for approximately 7:30.

SPRINGFIELD THE ONLY TIGERS MOVING ON

SALINEVILLE OH- Springfield and Newton Falls got paired up in the first round of the Division 4 Columbiana district tournament.  As the 7 seed, Springfield came in to the matchup the favorites on paper. The Tigers turned paper into reality as they beat Newton Falls in four sets.  25-13 25-18 25-27 25-16)

Baelyn Brungard, and Jameka Brungard we’re both tied at the top of the kills list with 10 apiece. Baelyn added 12 digs, and 26 assists to complete a triple double.  Jameka had 3 blocks to go with her kills.  Madi Lesnak had 7 kills, and a team high 4 blocks at the net.  She also served up 3 aces.  Jacey Mullen, and Sami McKim both tied with team lead in digs with 23. Mullen had 6 kills as well.

Springfield will advance to play Southern Local in the sectional championship on Thursday. The game will be at Western Reserve and first serve is set for approximately 7:30.

REBELS RIP OFF WIN TO OPEN TOURNAMENT

COLUMBIANA OH- Crestview has high hopes in this years OHSAA tournament. They know they have to take it one step at a time. They took care of step one on Tuesday as they swept Beachwood to advance to the sectional finals. (25-5 25-7 25-13)

Grace Auer led the offense this time around by collecting 14 kills on the night.  She also finished with 6 assists, and 7 digs.  Abbey Emch put in a solid 8 kills for the Rebels.  She also had 7 digs, and served up 4 aces.  Lainy Auer led the team in assists with 17.

Crestview advances to the sectional championship on Thursday against Waterloo. That game will be at Crestview and first serve is set for 6:00.

POLAND POWERS THROUGH TO NEXT ROUND

CORTLAND OH- Tournament time has officially arrived which means it’s time to separate the ones that will keep their season going from the ones that have to pack it in. Poland didn’t want to say goodbye just yet. They swept Mooney is three competitive sets to move on to the next round. (26-24 25-23 26-24)

Sarah Forsyth led the Bulldogs offense by collecting 12 kills on the night.  Morgan Bailey set the offense well all night setting up 13 assists, and also serving 2 aces.  Madelyn Ray led the Poland defense with 10 digs. Katie McDonald was a force at the net hammering 4 blocks.

Poland moves on to play conference rival Lakeview for the third time this season on Thursday at Crestview.  It will be the second game of the night starting at approximately 7:30.  Mooney ends the season with a record of 8-14.

MILTON FINDS THEMSELVES ON TOP OF OPENING ROUND THRILLER

NORTH JACKSON OH-

In the opening round of the sectional volleyball tournament the Lady Jays had a repeat opponent from last Tuesday regular season match with Heartland Christian.   The Lady Jays had the same results with a great battle with the Lady Lions and come out on top again in the five set battle.  The Lady Jays start the first set with too much nervousness, but were able to get it under control as the game went on and were able to make the needed adjustment to secure the win.

Leading in stats in the battle with Heartland was Emily Fultz with 16 service points and 5 aces.  Hailey Chudomelka had 13 service points with 5 aces.  Mia Greco controlled the net with 9 solo blocks and 16 kills.  Alena Len added 8 kills.  Paige Grope had 28 assists. Grace Johns had great defensive play with 25 digs.

The BlueJays will return to home on Thursday to take on Sebring in the section finals with start time slated 6pm.  Please come out and support the Lady Jays as they go for their second consecutive sectional championship and a return to districts.

RAIDERS GRAB THE UPSET ON THE ROAD

COLUMBIANA OH- South Range started their tournament run on Tuesday by traveling to Columbiana and beating the higher seeded Clippers in four sets. (25-16 25-18 16-25 25-10)

 

Olivia Meli led the Raiders offense with 13 kills. She also tallied 3 blocks on the night, and served up 3 aces.  Maria Primavera nailed down the Raiders defense with 31 digs, she also was 1 kill away from a double double with 9. Jamie Feren did have a double double with 20 assists, and 20 digs. She served up a pair of aces.

Ellie Jackson led the Clippers offense with 8 kills on the night. She grabbed a double double with 27 digs and 14 assists.  Kelsey Cameron had 7 kills for the Clippers, and she picked up 12 digs.  Ava Heinrich led the Clippers defense with 23 digs.

South Range advances to the sectional final on Thursday against LaBrae. That game will be at Lake Catholic at 6:00.  Columbiana ends their season with a record of 14-9,

AAC ANNOUNCES VOLLEYBALL AWARDS

It was a fantastic regular season in the AAC for volleyball.  With plenty of teams poised for a postseason run, it’s time to look at which players made the biggest impact on the AAC coaches in their postseason award voting.  Austintown Fitch won the AAC for the third straight season.

Winning the AAC Player of the Year this season was Austintown Fitch’s Jocelyn Jourdan.  Gresham Riley Simons joined Jourdan as Falcons on the First Team list. They are joined by Abby Muckleroy from Canfield, Cami Goske out of Boardman, Courtney Clark and Sianna Dykes representing Howland, Canfield’s libero Parker Wilkins also was named as a First Team member.

Second Team All AAC starts with Afton Roby and Kylie Folkwein from Austintown Fitch, Gia Triveri from Boardman, Alyssa Massucci representing Howland, Riley Kinkade makes it for Canfield, and the list is rounded out by Savana Shipman out of Warren Harding.  Boardman’s libero Gianna Cicchillo was second team libero.

REBELS RETURN TO THE WIN COLUMN

SALEM OH- Crestview has a tough stretch of games against Girard and Fitch in the last week. After some adversity, the Rebels got back to work, and on Thursday night they got back to their winning ways. The Rebels got a big sweep of Salem. (25-16 25-20 25-19)

Abbey Emch led the Rebels offense with 25 kills on the night. She also added a pair of aces.  Grace Auer racked in yet another triple double finishing with 16 kills, 17 assists, and 14 digs.  Lainy Auer led the team in setting putting up 19 assists.

Crestview closes out the regular season on Saturday as they host Boardman. The loss ends the regular season for Salem. They’ll open tournament play against West Branch next week.
