CHAMPION BASEBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH ANDREW BARKER 3-11-25

By Ty Bartell

WARREN OH- Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Champion Golden Flashes baseball program, head coach Andrew Barker has high expectations for his team. With a roster full of returning players and a strong work ethic established in the offseason, Champion looks poised for success in the competitive Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC).

Barker credits the culture of hard work and accountability that has been built over the last few years. He noted that offseason commitment was strong, with players consistently attending workouts, including those balancing basketball responsibilities. Now, with preseason practices underway, that dedication is translating onto the field.

The Golden Flashes will be led by a core group of seniors, including Shane Hixson, an all-conference catcher who transitioned from the infield earlier in his career. Bradey Quinby will anchor the pitching staff while also contributing as an infielder, and Dylan Howell, a four-year letter winner, provides a steady left-handed presence both on the mound and at the plate. Carter

Boggs, another senior, returns as a key piece in the infield, bringing consistency both defensively and on the base paths. Champion also has a solid mix of juniors and underclassmen expected to make an impact. Zack Morris, a junior, has already earned all-conference honors twice and will be a threat on the bases. Carter Chapin, a sophomore, returns after earning all-conference recognition as a freshman center fielder. Several other players are stepping into bigger roles, including Chase Vesey, who returns from injury, and Konner Reed, a versatile sophomore expected to see time in the infield and behind the plate. The MVAC Gray Tier will present a challenge, with perennial power LaBrae setting the standard as the reigning league champion. Barker expects his team to be competitive at the top of the standings but acknowledges the depth of talent across the conference.

The Flashes will also face a rigorous non-conferenc schedule, including matchups with Springfield, Ursuline, and Chagrin Falls. Barker envisions Champion playing an aggressive style, reminiscent of the up-tempo approach seen in VCU basketball. With a focus on base running, situational hitting, and putting pressure on opposing defenses, the Flashes aim to create opportunities on the diamond. Now in his 14th season as a head coach, Barker remains driven by his love for the game and the relationships he builds with his players. He embraces the challenges that come with coaching in Ohio, where unpredictable weather often dictates scheduling. Supported by a dedicated staff and a passionate community, he looks forward to seeing his team take the next step. With a strong foundation in place, The Flashes are ready to make a splash this season.
