CHANEY HOLDS ON IN OVERTIME TO SECURE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP


BOARDMAN, Ohio –

Matching up for the third time in the past four years, the fifth since 2001 with a district title on the line, the Chaney Cowboys (18-8) and Poland Bulldogs (17-9) faced off at Boardman High School for the Division II Canton Region Youngstown District crown.

D’Juan Waller scored twenty points for the game, Isiah Williams scored seven in the final period and Youngstown Chaney defeated Poland 67-58 in overtime Saturday afternoon. Chaney’s win came despite a twenty-nine-point effort from Ross Dedo of Poland. The senior went 11-19 from the field, shooting 65% from inside the arc.

Poland trailed by double digits at the half, and by as many as sixteen in the game. The Bulldogs scrapped and clawed their way back, highlighted by a 14-4 fourth quarter effort to send things into overtime. Unfortunately for the Dogs, the toll of not just the comeback itself, but the postseason as a whole proved to be too much in the extra period.Of Poland’s four postseason matchups, three needed more than the traditional four quarters to decide a winner.

Chaney Completing their quest for a district three-peat, the Chaney Cowboys will appear in the regional semifinals for just the second straight year, due to the 2020 season being cancelled due to COVID. Their opponent, a familiar face to not just Chaney but many of Valley teams, the #2 state ranked Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish (21-4).

The Irish ended the Struthers Wildcats season last year in the regional semis with a 76-37 routing and have won their last two matchups against the Cowboys by a combined forty-four points.

The Cowboys and Irish will face off Thursday,March 10th at 6:00 pm from the Canton Memorial Civic Center.

Poland Falling to Chaney for the second straight season in the district final, the Poland Bulldogs end head coach, Eric Fender’s, inaugural season with a record of 17-9. Poland has now lost their last three matchups against the Chaney Cowboys.
