CLIPPERS GET A BATTLE FROM JEFFERSON, BUT MOVE ON

COLUMBIANA OH-  Columbiana defeated Jefferson Area 3-0 in Wednesday’s sectional final as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Seth Spooner struck out Logan Saksa to finish off the game.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Columbiana  pitchers struck out ten, while Kirkland Lambert sat down nine.

In the second inning, the Clippers got their offense started. Devin Daugherty drove in one when he singled.

A single by Colin Reid in the second inning was a positive for Jefferson.

Riley McElwain pitched Columbiana to victory. The lefty went six innings, allowing zero runs on two hits and striking out nine. Spooner threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Spooner recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

Lambert took the loss for the Falcons. The pitcher surrendered three runs on five hits over six innings, striking out nine.

Daugherty went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Columbiana in hits. The Clippers didn’t commit a single error in the field. Colin Keleman had the most chances in the field with ten.

PJ Modzelewski led Jefferson with two hits in two at bats.

Columbiana moves on to the Niles district semifinals on Monday to play Springfield. First pitch at Waddell Park is set for 4:30.
