Vienna, Ohio- For week 7 of action Grand Valley went on the road to face off against the Mathews Mustangs. A much needed win for both conference teams, but there could only be one winner. The first quarter got off to a quick start as Grand Valley scored on a one play drive. Quarterback Sammy Goforth found receiver Ryan Waldo deep downfield for a 60 touchdown to go up 6-0, the 2pt conversion was no-good. Grand Valley would kick the ball back to Matthews to just force a fumble two minutes later and running back Andrew Soltis found paydirt on a 27 yard run to go up 14-0 with a successful 2 pt conversion from Soltis. Grand Valley’s defense would hold true as they stopped Matthews on fourth down to get the ball back with a minute remaining. 30 seconds later Goforth found tight end Nick Krieg over the middle for a 41 yard touchdown reception for the GV Mustangs to extend the lead to 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.

4 minutes into the second quarter Matthews would put together a methodical drive that would result in a touchdown as Brubaker finds the other Brubaker for a 38 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 22-8. However, Grand Valley would respond just seconds later as Goforth finds Foss-Peters on a 65 yard route for the score, and Foss-Peters would run in the 2pt conversion to go up 30-8 with 8 minutes remaining. Yet again Grand Valley’s defense would hold strong forcing a punt on 4th down. Getting the ball back with 5:30, the GV Mustangs would put together a slow moving drive and find paydirt as Goforth finds Lane Gallagher on a 15 yard jet sweep for a touchdown to go up 36-8, the 2pt conversion was no-good. With Matthews getting the ball back right before halftime they looked to make one last drive down the field, only to be sacked by Nick Krieg resulting in a loss of 12 to stall the drive and get the game into halftime.

Second half of the game, Grand Valley got the ball first and they would get deep inside their redzone only to fumble diving into the endzone and Matthews would recover. However, Grand Valley’s defense would continue to dominate as Joe Montgomery made a leaping grab and picked off Matthews. 60 seconds later Goforth would find Foss-Peters again on a 45 yard score and a successful 2pt conversion to extend the lead to 44-8. The game would remain the same until the clock struck 0:00.

Grand Valley stealing a win on the road was much needed to help boost team morale, and help improve their record within the conference and they did just that tonight. Week 8 of action Grand Valley will travel to Rootstown.
