HUBBARD HAILS SUPREME IN DOUBLE HEADER

HUBBARD, Ohio

The Hubbard Lady Eagles (13-8) played host to the Struthers Wildcats (9-11) for a pair of 5-inning games today.

GAME 1

In the first game of the day, the Lady Eagles got off to a hot start. Lexi Najdusak singled to left to leadoff the bottom of the 1st. Najdusak would reach second thanks to a passed ball then third via a wild pitch. A ground out by Gillian Ryser would then plate Najdusak to give the Lady Eagles the lead.

After holding the Cats scoreless in the 2nd, the Lady Eagles were back at the dish and ready to strike again. A single and a walk to leadoff the inning left the Eagles with high hopes, but a strikeout and infield fly would quickly move the Eagles into danger of leaving runners stranded.Mistakes by the Wildcats defense allowed both runners to come across to score without the Eagles even needing to record a hit.

Struthers would strike back in the top of the 3rd, singling to start the inning and eventually bringing the batter across to score. A walk by BellaSlaina would put another runner on before Nicolina Pezzone would double to center field and bring across their second run of the inning.

Seeing their lead close to just 1, the Lady Eagles took to the plate in the bottom half of the inning feeling pressure from the Cats. Gillian Ryser would reach on an error to start the inning, then Haley Croyle would smack one over the left field fence, moving the Eagles back out in front by 3.

Scoring would stop there in the first leg of the double header, but it wouldn’t come without a scare for the Lady Eagles. In the top half of the 5th, the Wildcats would load the bases thanks to a walk and two singles. With two away, Croylewould strike out the Wlidcats hitter, bringing game 1 to a close and giving the Eagles the win, 5-2.

GAME 2

The second leg of the double header proved to be much less exciting then the first, partly due to the starter for the Eagles on the mound.

Freshman star Isabella O’Brien took the bump for the Lady Eagles in game 2. O’Brien would strike out 10 in the outing while only giving up 4 hits and walking just 1.

O’Brien’s shutout was accompanied by an onslaught of Hubbard offense lead by Gillian Ryser. Ryser went 4-for-4 in the Lady Eagles winning effort, adding 3 RBIs to her resume. A multi hit game for Emily Filicky as well as a deep shot by Grace Narkum also highlighted the box score for Hubbard. At least 9 different hitters would record at least 1 hit in the Eagles 9-0 victory.
