IMMERSED IN POWER

BELOIT OH- The West Branch Warriors are the 2021 Division II Jefferson District Champions! The Warriors beat Mogadore Field 3-1 to secure their title. West Branch has made a living of coming up with clutch hits at perfect times all season. A good number of those hits come from junior Sydney Mercer.

Mercer has quickly become one of the most feared hitters in the area. We haven’t seen Sydney in a West Branch uniform since her freshman season in 2019. You could say she is making a solid name for herself now that she’s a upper classmen. While Sydney missed her sophomore season with West Branch, she did get the opportunity to play summer ball with an USSSA team. She had a remarkable summer at the plate for her travel season. She hit over 30 HR for the Pride, and knocked in over 70 RBI. Seeing these kinds of results gave Mercer all the confidence she would need to head into her junior season. Don’t let Sydney’s power at the plate distract you from the fact that she is also a lockdown shortstop. The leader of the infield can always be counted on to make the plays that need to be made.

Mercer is a multi sport athlete at West Branch. Not only does she tear it up on the dirt in the spring, she also racks up plenty of kills during volleyball season, and controls the paint for the Warriors come basketball season. All three programs have raised her standards for excellence. It has also given her the opportunity to build relationships with a multitude of different people on different teams.

Sydney has been a key part of the Warriors tournament run so far. In the district tournament, she has hit .461 and knocked in 4 RBI. She has also scored 3 runs for the Warriors. The Warriors will surely need Mercer to continue her hot streak at the plate to continue their tournament run.

Mercer was kind enough to catch up with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig this week. They discuss the district championship, Sydney’s approach at the plate, and much more. Warrior fans be sure to get ready for Wednesday’s game with this exclusive interview with one of the best power hitters in the area.
