LADY QUAKERS “SOLDI” AGAINST MINERVA

MINERVA, OH- After six innings the Minerva Lions held a 5-4 lead and that’s when it began to rain. Thanks to the Tennessee trip the Quakers consider any rain up north here to be nothing but a sprinkle. Elly Exline began the 7th inning with a base hit. Taylor Thorpe moved her to second on a sac bunt she almost beat out. Then Hayden Carner and Meg Rossero hit back to back rbi doubles to give Salem the 6-5 lead. With two outs Rylie “soldi” Troy hit another double to left center for what would end up the game winner.

With Salem leading 7-5, rainy weather and the top of the lineup coming up for the Lions it was time for the Quakers to do whatever they had to – to win a close conference game. The leadoff hitter Brunner who already had two doubles in the game – hit a shot towards left field. Rylie Troy made an all-out running then diving catch to snag the shot before it could touch the grass. Taylor Thorpe then struck out the #2 batter for the fourth time before Minerva would put three straight two-out hits together and tighten the score to 7-6 with two runners on. Hannah Kelm (2B) secured the final out on pop up.

Elly Exline had three hits in the game and scored three runs. On Hayden Carner’s rbi double she broke the single-season rbi record and now has 24. Bailee Thorn led off the game with a double. Brooke Veglia extended her hitting streak to 11 games. Meg Rossero singled and doubled with 2 rbi. Taylor Thorpe and Rylie Troy each had two hits. Madison Markovich and Jessica Slocum each singled. Each position in the lineup had at least one hit – that’s teamwork.

Bailee Thorn chased down a blooped ball and made a great throwback to 1st for a double play. Elly Exline continued to play error-free ball from 3rd on three chances. Taylor Thorpe broke the single-season wins record with her 13th win and struck out 8 in the game.

If you’ve read this far you deserve to know that soldi means “money” in Italian. Rylie has been “money”’ the past few evenings.

The Lady Quakers are back in action Monday at home against Marlington.
