LAKEVIEW SECURES WALK OFF WIN
CORTLAND, Ohio –
Jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Hubbard Eagles (9-11) looked primed to complete the season sweep of the Lakeview Bulldogs (7-8) and get back to .500 on the year.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, their lead would not hold up as they’d drop the game to the Bulldogs 7-6. A high score total yes, but not the reward of good offense but rather poor defense.
The two teams would combine for 8 errors on the day, with a healthy chunk of them resulting in runs coming across. An error in the first was responsible for the inaugural run coming across for the Eagles. Hubbard would then return the favor with 2 errors of their own to allow Lakeview to plate 3 runs in the third and take the lead.
After Albert Gerlick would reach base via an error for Hubbard in the fifth, a wild pitch would bring across one Eagle to score, then a sacrifice fly would bring Gerlick home.
Trailing by 1 in the top of the seventh, Hubbard had two outs on them and their backs against the wall. As the Eagle bats have done so often this season, they answered the call when it mattered most, but on par with the day, it came with the help of an error. Evan Jarvis reached first after an error by the Lakeview shortstop to keep the Eagles hopes alive and would later come across to score thanks to an RBI double by Hayden Fox.
Tied heading into the bottom of the seventh, Lakeview needed just one to walk it off and hand Hubbard their fifth walk off loss on the year. After a line out to start their half, J Wilms would reach thanks to, you guessed it, an error by the Hubbard defense. A fielders choice moved Wilms into scoring position with 2 away before Nick Demonica would deliver a game winning RBI double to right field.
