MAYHEW MAKES AN IMPACT

By Ty Bartell

BOARDMAN OH-  As we are heated up in another season of high school baseball. The All-American Conference (AAC) as always an intriguing league. The Boardman Spartans look to be right in the mix for a conference crown and one of those players that will act as a driving force is the do-all player, Kayden Mayhew!

Playing behind the plate as one of Boardman’s catchers, Mayhew can also be spotted at second or roaming the outfield. “[I’m] probably just energetic utility guy. You put me anywhere, I’m probably going to make a play.” However, if you ask him, catching would be his favorite. “I remember the one time this kid hit a foul ball and I caught it barehanded. And I think that’s when I knew that I wanted to play catcher.” Mayhew said.

Being a multiple-sport athlete, Mayhew brings some experience being a senior leader for the sports seasons previous this one, allowing him to be at his most comfortable in the dugout as one of the leaders this year, taking inspiration from Spartans seniors of the past. “Always going back to like my sophomore year as a young guy, learning from the seniors and how they led. I just kind of, I learned from that and tried to put it into my own leadership role.” Mayhew said. With his coaches serving as role models as well, they have served as focal points in Mayhews growth.

“Probably just everything, you know, becoming a better baseball player, but being around these coaches and making me a better person is one thing that really stuck with me.” As Mayhew and the rest of The Spartans get ready to take the field for opening day, he hopes to see the community rally behind them once again “We saw it during basketball season. You know, when we have success, people are going to come out, come watch us and cheer us on.” Mayhew said.

A team-first player that does not care where he plays, just that he is playing with his team. Mayhew serves as a crucial piece to the Boardman puzzle this season, serving as a dugout voice with plenty of experience and a great outlook on the game as well as life. Mayhew and the Spartan squad take the field next on  Monday May 5th at home against conference rival Canfield.
