MOONEY CONTINUES HOLY WAR DOMINANCE

YOUNGSTOWN OH-  After a long awaited matchup between these two teams and a delay, it was time and this time, it was in prime time as the Lady Irish of Ursuline, hosted their rivals Cardinal Mooney lady Cardinals at the Cafaro Gymnasium in the CITY OF GRIT.  Both teams threw their seven and eight wins and their five losses away in this one as the goal was either 0-1 or 1-0.  This was also a revenge game as it’s been two years since the Irish beat the Cardinals.

First Half Stats

The first three minutes saw the game have players play a lot of defense with the score only three to nothing and would end the first quarter with the Irish leading the Cardinals 11-9.  The second quarter saw most of the same with little scoring and a lot of defensive play by players such as Alayna Smith, Katie Hough and others.  Lily Scott tried one more shot before the half to extend the lead to three but it didn’t go as Ursuline went into the locker room leading by one 19-18.

Second half

The second half is where things took a turn as the Irish struggled on the defensive side with Mooney taking the advantage thanks to players in Gia DiVincenzo, Hough and Alaina Scavina.  Ursuline also struggled with injuries and their star guard Rachel Fabry and Scott had lower body injuries, but would still continue to play through all the way.  In the end, it was Coach Jason Baker getting his ninth win of the season against Mike Kernan and the Lady Irish 45-36 as Mooney continued their winning streak against Ursuline.

Ursuline Stats

Alayna Smith was the leading scorer with 12 points, going 8-11 on free throws and two field goals inside the paint.  Lily Scott was good off the bench scoring 11 points, making three three pointers and two points inside the paint.  Cara McNally finished with six points, Anisah Moorman had four points, Rachel Fabry had two and Jamie Nelson finished with one point.

Mooney Stats

For Mooney, they were once again led by Katie Hough who had 16 points, two for three on free throws with seven field goals inside the paint made.  Alaina Scavina scored 12 points going four for five on free throws and four field goals inside the paint, Angelina Rotunno had five points, Maddie Tremble, Maria Fire and Gia DiVincenzo combined for six points.  Meanwhile Olivia Rouser had two points and Gia Diorio had a point but was fast when it came to the defensive side.
