MOONEY MAKES THEIR RETURN TO STATE

WARREN OH- Mooney came in to Saturdays Regional Final looking to get back to the state tournament. After punching a ticket in 2020, the Cardinals had a disappointing overtime loss to Crestview last season to end their year. Almost immediately, Mooney got hungry to get right back. They brought back just about everyone that made big contributions in their run. Throughout the year, Mooney faced every challenge their schedule had to face with precision and focus. That is how they handled this matchup with Beachwood, and that’s why they came away with a 2-0 victory.

The first half both teams were feeling each other out. Both programs feature excellent defense, and they proved it. There were only 5 combined shots on goal in the first half. Beachwood had 3, Mooney had 2.  As the wind gusted in the second half, Mooney took advantage of going with it.  They scored two goals in two minutes in a quick strike. The first one came from Angel Alvarez in the 51st minute, then just a minute later Mason Janis netted the Cardinals second goal.

Mooney advances to their second state semifinal in three seasons. They’ll square off with Ottawa Hills on Wednesday at 7:00. That game will take place at Sandusky Perkins High School, the host of Ottawa Hills win over United in the regional semifinals.
