MOONEY SENIORS SHINE IN 3-1 WIN OVER STRUTHERS

With senior night comes a bevy of emotions. Laughs, smiles, and sometimes tears as well. For the five seniors honored at Mooney’s game against Struthers, it was chance to put together a performance worthy of the adulation. And they most certainly delivered.

Mooney trail early in set one, with some excellent blocks by Struthers and some off target serves. At one point, down 8-4, the girls rallied around each other after a brief timeout. That was when Magen Petty started to hit her stride. Petty dominated at the net, with 7 kills in the first set. Fellow seniors Mariah Farragher and lebero C.J. Sapp also contributed with kills of their own. But it wasn’t just the seniors. In a spectacular sequence, Leanne Chandler aced the Wildcats on 3 consecutive serves. Mooney would take set one by a score of 25-12.

Set two was a back and forth affair, Struthers adjusting nicely to the repeated aces scored by Mooney. Heike Kaurshill and Kortnie Bolevich led the charge as Struthers would fight back to take set two 25-23.

In the third set, another underclassmen stepped up when Katie Hough made a miraculous dig as the Wildcats were mounting a comeback. Alisa Telega and Farragher kept plenty of possessions alive, and Raegen Filipowicz took over where Petty started. Raegen finished with 3 kills and also 3 blocks. Mooney takes set three 25-16.

With the game on the line, in the game winning set, Sapp and Petty would show their leadership. After a somewhat quiet second and third set, Petty exploded offensively with 7 more kills. She would finish with 14, the game’s highest. Sapp would score two more aces, and Mooney would dominate the fourth set wire to wire, picking up the win 25-13 and 3-1 in total sets.
