POLAND GETS A FINAL TUNE UP BEFORE DISTRICTS

POLAND OH- The Poland Seminary Lady Bulldogs held onto their twentieth win of the season by defeating Mooney 2-1 in what has become a Southside rivalry.

The game remained scoreless with both pitchers, Katie McDonald and Alaina Francis keeping hitters from crossing the plate.  In the bottom half of the 4th inning, McDonald singled and was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt.  On the first pitch, junior right fielder Meredith Trevis singled on a line drive to the right-center gap for an RBI, scoring Poland’s first run.  The ball got by Mooney’s center fielder and rolled to the fence, and Trevis found herself standing on 3rd Base with one out.  On a 2-2 count junior catcher Sophia D’Angelo grounded-out to the first baseman and earned an RBI when Trevis scored on the play.
Poland held the 2-0 lead until Mooney’s last at bat in the 7th inning.  Maria Fire singled to left field and with one out, scored when Alaina Francis doubled on a line drive to center field.  McDonald shut the door with a strike out and ground out to end the game.  McDonald finished the game for her 20th win and collected 8 strikeouts allowing only the two hits over the game, both occuring in the 7th inning.
Leanne Willaims and Emily Denney each added hits for Poland.  Poland’s record stands at 20-7 and they resume District tournament play against West Branch on Tuesday in Jefferson, Ohio.
