RUNNING WEDNESDAYS WITH RICK SYPERT (EP 4) FEATURING MACEY MCBRIDE

CONNEAUT OH – The latest episode of YSN’s “Running Wednesdays” spotlighted sophomore track standout Macey McBride, whose record-breaking performances and mature mindset have put her on the radar as one of Ohio’s rising track stars.

Hosted by Anthony Hartwig and Boardman’s Rick Sypert, the episode delved into McBride’s rapid ascent. Despite just being in her second year of high school, McBride has already shattered multiple school records for the Conneaut Spartans, specializing in the 200 and 400 meter races. She attributes her breakthrough to year-round training–including winter circuit workouts at Edinboro’s indoor facility and regular morning lift sessions. “It’s honestly been kind of shocking,” McBride confessed. “I wasn’t really expecting to get as far as I did.” Family features prominently in her journey: her father serves not only as her coach but also as a strong motivator, while her older brother—himself a successful high school and college runner—helps push her to new heights.

When asked about training, McBride shared her flexible approach: “I’m fine with doing whatever because I know it eventually is going to get me where I need to be.” She admits a fondness for ‘ladders’ and longer runs early in the season, but has shifted focus to sprints and explosive starts as competitions heat up. With postseason meets approaching, McBride keeps her sights set on daily improvement, emphasizing the importance of staying calm and not succumbing to pressure. “The more I think about it, the worse it is,” she said, recalling last year’s nerves at regionals and her goal now to reach the state prelims.

Support from teammates and a close-knit track program fuels her competitive drive. “Everyone on our team is so nice and they’re all supportive and they’re always there cheering everyone on,” McBride said. Off the track, McBride is a devoted art student, soccer player, and member of the school’s drill team, finding balance between athletics and her creative passions. As regionals draw near, all eyes will be on McBride—both as an athlete and a role model. Her advice to fellow runners? “As long as I do what I know I could do, then that’s the win for me.”
