SALEM AND SOUTH RANGE SPLIT SERIES
SALEM, OH- In a series that many had their eyes on, two of the top teams in the area battled to a split on the year in an abbreviated “doubleheader” on Saturday.
The first game was picked up at 5-1 in the Quakers’ favor from last week when play was halted from a snowstorm in the home half of the fifth inning. The Raiders came out immediately, and loaded the bases, allowing for Mike Markaulin to drive in 3 RBI on a single in the gap- bringing the game to 5-4.
From there, the Quakers responded in a big way.
It started with a Jackson Johnson sac fly that scored Lane Rhodes in the 6th, then Carson Rhodes doubled to right scoring Wilms and Brock Young and making it 8-4 in Salem’s favor. In the top of the seventh inning, Jackson Johnson singled past the first baseman to score Lane Rhodes- and giving Salem the insurance run they were looking for.
GAME TWO
South Range got things moving in the first inning, when Trey Pancake singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. Salem Quakers evened things up at two in the bottom of the first inning when Brock Young‘s sac fly scored one run for Salem Quakers.
South Range pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning. In the third Pasquale‘s sac fly scored one run for South Range.
South Range scored six runs in the sixth inning. South Range’s big inning was driven by an error on a ball put in play by Luke Blasko and Rohan, a single by Blake Jeffries, and by Michael Perry.
Garrett Sheets pitched South Range to victory. The pitcher went six innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out one.
Young took the loss for Salem. The pitcher went four and two-thirds innings, allowing 12 runs on ten hits and striking out two.
Carson Rhodes started the game for Salem. The right-hander surrendered two runs on two hits over one inning, striking out one.
Darius Beck and Gavin Wilms each collected one hit to lead Salem Quakers Varsity.
South Range racked up 12 hits in the game. Rohan, Pancake, and Markaulin each managed multiple hits for South Range. Rohan led South Range with three hits in five at-bats.
