NILES OH- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers took on the West Virginia Black Bears in the 2022 season opener. The Scrappers jumped on the board quickly, and carried the lead the rest of the way to take the home opener.

The Scrappers drew first blood in the first inning after West Virginia starter, Peyton Olynik, walked and hit a batter with the bases loaded to make it a 2-0 Scrappers lead after the first inning. The Scrappers scored 1 more in the 2nd, but West Virginia scored 3 runs on 4 consecutive base hits to tie the game at 3 in the third inning. Mahoning Valley came right back to take the lead in the 4th, and added onto that lead with an RBI single from the high school prospect, Adrian Salas, to make it 5-3 after 6 innings.

West Virginia made it a 1 run lead in the eight inning, until Buck Anderson broke the game open with a 2 RBI single in the eight inning, making it 7-4. West Virginia second baseman Blaze Brothers hit a solo homerun in the 9th, but Sean Goodwin closed it out for the Scrappers to take the season opener, 7-5.
