SOUTHERN USES FAST START TO EARN GRITTY WIN

WELLSVILLE OH-  Southern Local and Wellsville got into a wild one Monday, but it was the Indians who came out on top with a 12-11 win.

Raelea Carosiello was huge at the plate, going 3-for-5 and blasting a solo homer to right in the seventh to break an 11-11 tie and give Southern the edge for good. She also doubled in the second and singled in the third to help set the tone early.

It was a slugfest from the jump. Southern jumped out quick in the first after a couple of Wellsville errors and a Kennedy Lewis RBI single. Makenna Jones tripled in the second to tack on three more, and RBI singles from Lidia Spahlinger and Carosiello stretched it to 8-0 early.

But Wellsville stormed back in the third, hanging a seven-spot thanks to a handful of hits and some Southern miscues. They tied it up again in the fourth with an inside-the-park homer and a double.

Southern looked like they pulled away in the sixth after Breena Frischkorn singled in two, but Wellsville kept clawing, tying it again with a fielder’s choice and a groundout. That’s when Carosiello stepped up and hammered the game-winner in the seventh.

Addy Martin gutted it out in the circle for Southern, throwing all seven innings and striking out nine despite giving up nine hits and 11 runs (six earned). Landess took the loss for Wellsville, fanning 14 but giving up 12 runs (six earned) on 10 hits.

Jones led the way with three RBIs for Southern. Frischkorn had two hits, and the Indians stayed aggressive on the bases, swiping six bags on the night.

Wellsville had some big swings too, with Vallera picking up three hits and Landess adding two more. They ran wild too, stealing five bases as a team. Southern heads to Beaver Local next for a Tuesday matchup.
