SPARTANS BLANK FITCH ON THE ROAD

AUSTINTOWN OH-  Boardman defeated Austintown-Fitch 5-0 on Thursday as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. The win gives Boardman the season series over Fitch, and the sectional championship.

Boardman opened up scoring in the second inning. An error scored two runs.

One bright spot for Fitch was a single by Dom Perry in the third inning.

Griffin Widrig was the winning pitcher for Boardman. The righty allowed five hits and zero runs over six innings, striking out 12 and walking one. Young threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Young recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

Joe Roth took the loss for the Falcons. The bulldog lasted seven innings, allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out eight.

The Spartans had nine hits in the game. Colin Thomas and Widrig each managed multiple hits. Thomas led with three hits in four at bats. Boardman  didn’t commit a single error in the field. Seth Cervello had 13 chances in the field, the most on the team.

Fitch tallied six hits on the day. Carter Owens and Perry each racked up multiple hits for Fitch.

Boardman advances to the district semifinals to play Uniontown Lake.  That game is set for Tuesday at 5:00 at Thurman Munson Memorial Field in Canton.
