CANFIELD TURNS AROUND AND WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

BOARDMAN OH- Canfield bounced back and took down Wheelersburg 5-1 on Monday in the winner-take-all championship game of the 10U state tournament.

An early error got Canfield on the board in the first inning.

Reese Grimes singled for Wheelersburg, tying the game at one in the bottom of the first.

The game stayed tight until the fifth inning when Lilly Barber singled, driving in two runs. McKayla Lang then tripled, pushing the lead to 5-1.

Barber was a force on the mound, allowing just four hits and one run over six innings, striking out nine and walking three. Brynn Williams took the loss for Wheelersburg, pitching one and one-third innings, giving up one run on two hits, striking out two, and walking one. Grimes started for Wheelersburg, giving up one hit and four runs (three earned) over four and two-thirds innings, with eight strikeouts and six walks.

Lang drove in two runs, going 1-for-2. Emmie Edenfield, Barber, and Lang each had a hit. Lucy Crowgey led with two walks. Canfield showed patience at the plate, drawing seven walks. They were solid in the field, committing no errors, with Lang handling nine plays.

For Wheelersburg, Grimes went 1-for-2 and drove in a run, while Shalyn Hall led with two hits in two at-bats.

With this win, Canfield clinches the 10U state championship.

WHEELERSBURG FORCES A WINNER TAKE ALL FINAL

BOARDMAN OH- Canfield couldn’t bounce back after a rough start, losing 2-0 to Wheelersburg on Monday in the 10U state championship round. Wheelersburg grabbed the lead in the first inning when Brynn Williams singled, driving in two runs.

Gabby Stack was solid for Canfield, striking out 11, giving up five hits and two runs over six innings, with only one walk.

Reese Grimes was lights out for Wheelersburg, throwing a no-hitter. She struck out eight and walked one over six innings, sealing the win.

Canfield’s defense was flawless, with McKayla Lang leading with 13 chances in the field.

Williams was the star for Wheelersburg, going 2-for-2 and driving in both runs.

With this win, Wheelersburg forces a decisive game against Canfield to crown the state champion.

WHEELERSBURG EARNS THEIR SPOT IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP

BOARDMAN OH- Wheelersburg exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning, cruising to a 12-0 win over Olentangy on Sunday and advancing to the 10U state championship.

The fourth-inning rally featured Reese Stang doubling in two runs, Ava Kate Chamberlain singling in another, Madelyn Bailey doubling in two more, Harper Burgess singling in two, Brynnli Greenhill tripling in one, and Audrey Styles singling in another.

Wheelersburg got on the board early in the second inning with Elle Glockner’s RBI double.

They added to the lead in the third when Greenhill singled and then stole home.

Reese Grimes was dominant on the mound, pitching four hitless, scoreless innings, striking out nine, and walking two.

Wheelersburg racked up 11 hits, with leadoff hitter Greenhill going 2-for-3. They also stole nine bases and were flawless in the field, with Emmalynn Chidsee handling nine chances.

Next up, Wheelersburg faces Canfield in the state championship on Monday. They’ll need to win both games of a doubleheader to take the title.

CANFIELD ROLLS ON TO MONDAY

BOARDMAN OH- Canfield rolled over Olentangy 10-0 on Saturday, earning a spot in the state championship on Monday.

They started strong in the first inning with Jessa Deley singling, McKayla Lang doubling, Lydia Handel grounding out, Hailey Reigrut singling, and Emmie Edenfield singling, each bringing in a run.

Canfield tacked on another run in the second thanks to an Olentangy error, pushing the score to 6-0.

The third inning saw more fireworks as Lang doubled in a run, Gabby Stack tripled, scoring two, and Marcella Minoti singled to bring another run home.

Deley earned the win, allowing just one hit and no runs over three innings, striking out seven and walking none. Stack started the game, pitching a hitless, scoreless inning with three strikeouts.

Canfield racked up 10 hits, with Deley and Lang leading the charge. Lang, hitting in the heart of the lineup, went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs. The defense was flawless, with Lang handling 10 chances cleanly.

Canfield now awaits the winner of Olentangy vs. Wheelersburg in Monday’s state championship. Canfield just needs one more win to clinch the title, while their opponent will have to beat them twice in a row.

TALLMADGE AVOIDS ELIMINATION

BOARDMAN OH- Tallmadge 10U came out swinging on Friday, crushing Hamilton 11-2 in a state tournament elimination game.

Tallmadge jumped ahead in the first inning with Lea Smith singling, Hollie Danforth walking, and Ella Benson hitting into a fielder’s choice, each bringing in a run.

The team added three more runs in the third, highlighted by Danforth’s triple on an 0-2 count, pushing the score to 6-1.

The fifth inning saw Tallmadge pile on five more runs. A wild pitch, a single by Lydia Sudzina, an inside-the-park home run by Makenna Carlton, and another single from Smith sealed the deal.

Teresa Coogan took the win for Tallmadge, allowing two hits and two runs over five innings with eight strikeouts and three walks. Brooklynn Myers took the loss for Hamilton, giving up 11 runs (nine earned) on eight hits over six innings, striking out five and walking seven. Sudzina pitched a flawless inning in relief, striking out three and giving up just one hit.

Tallmadge racked up eight hits, with Smith leading the way with two in two at-bats. Kendall Ringer drew two walks, contributing to the team’s seven for the game. Ringer and Carlton stole multiple bases, with the team swiping six total. They were solid in the field, committing no errors, and Carlton was a standout with 14 chances.

For Hamilton, Gia Harness, Ellee Robinson, and Myka Gray each had a hit, with Harness and Robinson driving in one run apiece.

Tallmadge moves on to face Wheelersburg on Saturday at noon in another elimination game, while Hamilton’s tournament run ends here.

CANFIELD PITCHING KEEPS UP THE PACE

BOARDMAN OH- Lilly Barber was on fire Friday, striking out 13 batters and leading Canfield 10U to a 3-1 victory over Wheelersburg. Barber gave up four hits and one run over six innings, with just two walks.

Both teams brought their A-game on the mound. Canfield’s pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts, while Wheelersburg’s pitchers fanned eight.

Canfield took the lead in the third inning thanks to a wild pitch and an error that brought in three runs.

Reese Grimes took the loss for Wheelersburg, pitching five innings and giving up three runs (one earned) on one hit, with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Grace Carpenter led Canfield with a hit in her only at-bat. The team was solid in the field, turning a double play and committing no errors. McKayla Lang was a standout with 13 chances handled flawlessly.

For Wheelersburg, Reese Stang drove in their only run, going 1-for-2. Brynn Williams had a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2.

CANFIELD TAKES THEIR FIRST STEP IN STATE BRACKET

BOARDMAN OH- Both teams brought their A-game on Thursday, but Canfield’s 10U squad clinched a 2-0 win over Tallmadge. Gabby Stack was a beast on the mound, racking up 18 outs.

Stack was on fire, fanning 13 batters. She pitched a no-hitter, giving up zero runs and only three walks over six innings.

Lydia Handel’s double got Canfield on the scoreboard in the second inning.

McKayla Lang was hot at the plate, going 2-for-2 and leading the team in hits. Handel and Lang each knocked in a run. Emmie Edenfield showed a good eye, drawing two walks. The whole team was patient at the plate, collecting eight walks in total.

SLAGLE IS PERFECT IN BATTLE FOR THE RANGE

CANFIELD, OH- The South Range Raiders Softball program hosted their annual Battle for the Range that featured their 10u and 8u teams on Wednesday, and it was quite the show from Riley Slagle as she dealt a perfect game with 11 strikeouts in the circle for Fairway.

Fairway got things started in the bottom of the first with three walks. Ellie Liebig drew a walk that brought in the first run. The scoring continued in the second inning with walks from Macey Eicher, Evelyn Liebig, Riley Slagle, Reese Brogan, and a single from Taylor Dustman, each driving in a run.

Fairway didn’t let up, adding five more runs in the third with RBI walks from Mya Niznik, Eliza Liebig, Molly Bagwell , Brylee Ostrosky, and Evelyn Liebig. Evelyn Liebig led the charge with two RBIs, while Estelle Gustat went 2-for-2 to lead the team in hits. Fairway showed great patience at the plate, racking up 20 walks. Ellie and Riley each walked three times, and Riley stole two bases.

Fairway will welcome Lowellville for their next game on Monday.

BOARDMAN ADVANCES PAST SOUTH RANGE

BOARDMAN, OH- Boardman 10u won big over South Range 14-2 on Wednesday.

Boardman 10u got things moving in the first inning, when Julia Putko singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run.

Boardman notched seven runs in the fifth inning. Gabrielle Price, Julia Putko, Rylynne Scriber, and Sylvie Chmielewski each had RBIs in the big inning.

Rylynne Scriber earned the victory on the rubber for Boardman. The bulldog went four innings, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out 11 and walking one.

Riley Slagle was in the pitcher’s circle for South Range. The righty allowed 18 hits and 14 runs over five innings, striking out eight and walking one.

Boardman 10u District 2023 totaled 18 hits. Putko, Price, Mia Davies, and Kaylee Hughes each had multiple hits for Boardman. Mia Davies, Gabrielle Price, and Julia Putko each collected three hits to lead Boardman. Boardman didn’t commit a single error in the field. Gabrielle Price had 12 chances in the field, the most on the team.

AUSTINTOWN LITTLE LEAGUE SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH MATT HAMLEY

AUSTINTOWN OH- STATE CHAMPIONS!! The Austintown 10U softball team has reached the summit of the state softball world. With their sixth victory over Poland of the summer, this time around by a score of 14-2, Austintown claimed the state crown.

Head coach Matt Hamley could not be in attendance during the team’s run through the bracket.  He put a plan in place to make sure his team would be ready to succeed without him physically there. He was still a big part of the game plans.  He couldn’t be prouder of his team, and now he knows it’s time to look to the future. Next season seven of the players on the roster will make the step up to 12U.  He took the time to come on YSN’s Running Point to talk about the state championship, highlight some of the key members of his roster, and much more.
