BIRDSOF PREY; CANFIELD PUNCHES TICKET TO REGIONAL FINAL
CANTON, OH- Canfield came out swinging and never cooled off, steamrolling Hubbard 10-2 Tuesday night at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in a complete team effort.
David Murphy led the offensive explosion with a perfect 3-for-3 day, stacking up two singles and a double while driving in runs and scoring once himself. Murphy got the party started in the top of the first with a single down the left field line, part of a five-run outburst that stunned the Eagles early. Dylan Mancini kicked off the scoring with a sharp RBI single to right, followed by a laser double down the line from Zain Jadallah, and a hard-hit RBI single up the middle by Ryan Weibling. Tanner Stricko capped the frame by driving in a run on a fielder’s choice.
Canfield stayed aggressive in the second. Murphy collected his second hit of the night—another RBI single—pushing the lead to 7-0 and knocking Hubbard starter Gabe Rusnak out of rhythm. Rusnak lasted just two innings, giving up seven earned on nine hits.
The Cardinals weren’t done, though. In the fourth, Murphy roped a double to the warning track, setting the table for more insurance runs. Groner, Jadallah, and Mancini also came through with timely knocks, stretching the lead even further. Groner helped himself with a 3-hit night at the plate and took care of business on the mound, tossing 6.2 innings of strong ball. The southpaw struck out six, walked one, and allowed just five hits with no earned runs. Jadallah came out of the pen to shut the door.
Canfield’s offense was relentless—15 hits top to bottom with five guys collecting multiple knocks. Alongside Murphy and Groner’s 3-hit performances, both Mancini and Jadallah added two hits apiece. Joey Gabriel also chipped in with a pair of base knocks.
Hubbard found a couple of bright spots late. Kyle Barr and Braydon Songer each picked up an RBI, and five different Eagles registered hits. Defensively, Hubbard played clean baseball with no errors, and catcher Johnny Reyes kept things steady behind the plate with a team-high five fielding chances.
Still, the Eagles never recovered from Canfield’s early barrage. The Cardinals dictated the pace, capitalized on nearly every scoring opportunity, and rode a dominant outing from Groner to cruise to a double-digit win.
