NEW MIDDLETOWN, OH – The Springfield Lady Tigers volleyball team is in high spirits as they prepare for their pivotal tournament match against Jackson Milton this Saturday at 1:00 PM. Leading the charge is senior captain Karigan Mullen, who has recently shattered the school record for assists in a single season with a remarkable 761 assists. This achievement adds to her career milestone of 1,000 assists, propelling her into the spotlight as a key player for the Lady Tigers.

Karigan Mullen, a seasoned veteran on the team, is a crucial force both on and off the court. “These girls, the seniors, they are my best friends on and off the court, so being able to play with them definitely means a lot,” Mullen shared during a recent episode of the YSN podcast, hosted by Steve Leslie. The camaraderie and teamwork have been cornerstones of their successful season, boasting a commendable 15-7 record. The Lady Tigers face a tough competitor in Jackson Milton, a team they have split games with this season. As they gear up for the big match, Mullen emphasizes the importance of focus and effort. “We gotta do what we know we need to do. It’s gonna take a lot of effort. They’re a good team. They’re a scrappy team. So we just gotta really fight for every point,” said Mullen, highlighting the determination and resilience needed to secure a victory.

The team also celebrates another milestone, with underclassman Baelyn Braungard achieving 1,000 digs for her career, showcasing the depth of talent within the squad. Head Coach Caitlin Barber, praised by Mullen as an “amazing coach,” has played a vital role in guiding the team through a challenging season filled with ups and downs and preparing them for tournament success. Springfield’s tight-knit community and the strong support system from families and friends provide an additional boost for the Lady Tigers. Mullen’s parents, regular attendees at her games, are among her biggest supporters. “My parents definitely are my number one supporters. They come to everything they can,” Mullen expressed, highlighting the significant role her family plays in her athletic journey.

As the Lady Tigers step onto their home court this Saturday, they aim not only for a victory but also to make a notable run in the tournament. The Springfield community is called upon to come out in full force to support their team. “Tiger Nation, you need to get out and support these girls in full force,” urged Leslie. The Tigers, fresh off a thrilling 34-27 victory over Mineral Ridge, are set to face off against the formidable McDonald Blue Devils this Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

In a recent episode of “Tiger’s Table” on YSN, senior Thomas Sheely shared insights into the team’s mindset and preparation. Reflecting on the adrenaline-pumping win against Mineral Ridge, Sheely emphasized the importance of positive energy on and off the field. “Coach Guerrero’s positivity and thorough game planning have been crucial,” Sheely stated. “Everyone knows their role, and our offensive line’s pass protection has been a focal point.” This season has been a standout for the Tigers, boasting a record of 6-2. The team’s blend of a strong running game and an evolving passing game is a testament to their versatility, a necessary trait as they approach playoff season. “When you get to playoff time, you need to be able to do both,” said Sheely.

However, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Reflecting on areas for improvement, Sheely pointed out the need for better pass protection and reducing penalties. “Staying onside is crucial,” he acknowledged, sharing a lighter moment about Coach Guerrero’s reaction to his offside penalties.  The matchup against McDonald comes with high stakes. Both teams enter the game with identical 6-2 records, adding an extra layer of intensity to this longstanding rivalry. “It’s going to be an old-school style football game,” Sheely noted, highlighting the physicality expected in the trenches.

Family support has been a cornerstone for Sheely throughout his football journey. “They mean everything to me,” he shared. With the end of his high school football career approaching, the significance of community and family support has never been more profound. As Springfield eyes the possibility of hosting playoff games at Tiger Stadium, the community is urged to rally behind their team. “Tiger Nation, they need you Friday night,” Steve Leslie rallied.
