CRESTVIEW REGISTERS BIG WIN OVER LIBERTY

COLUMBIANA, OH – Crestview came into tonight searching for their first win of the young basketball season. They would find victory with the help of Junior, Drake Golden, who reached double figures in points for the night. Liberty made costly turnovers throughout the game that helped the Rebels increase their lead.

The first quarter was all Rebels after playing tough defense on the Leopards helped Crestview take the early lead 16-9. The Leopards would cut their deficit midway through the second quarter thanks to rebounds by Forward Micah Dukes and field goals by Guard Manuel Dubose to make the game 32-26 Rebels at halftime. Crestview would score 19 points in the third quarter thanks to fouls committed by Liberty and gave the Rebels multiple opportunities. Golden would find help from his team in the fourth quarter thanks to Guard Tony Cusick and Kirkland Miller. The Rebels would maintain their lead in the fourth quarter and ultimately seal their victory with multiple second shot attempts.

The Rebels beat the Leopards 68-60 in their first conference game of the season. Crestview(1-3) will travel to Lisbon (1-2) tomorrow, December 14th. Liberty(2-1) will face Warren JFK(1-2) on Tuesday, December 17th.

CRESTVIEW LADY REBELS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 1) WITH AARON BLATCH

Coach Aaron Blatch and the Crestview Lady Rebels are off to a strong start in the 2019-2020 high school basketball season, currently sitting at 3-1. The Lady Rebs are coming off their first loss of the season to the Liberty Leopards, but Coach Blatch knows that an early loss in the season can be a solid teaching moment to build the chemistry and ultimately lead to success later on in the season.

The Lady Rebels will look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday, December 14th, as they will hit the road and travel up to Champion to take on the Golden Flashes. Crestview will then return home on Wednesday, December 18th, as the Lady Rebs will welcome the Brookfield Warriors to town.

YSN’s own, D.J. Yokley, had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Coach Blatch to preview the matchup against Champion but also to discuss the team this year and see what his outlook is on the 2019-2020 basketball season.

LEOPARDS POUNCE ON REBELS

COLUMBIANA OH- On Wednesday night a clash between two AAC Blue contenders took place at Crestview high school. Liberty came away with this one 64-46.

This was a matchup of two teams that like to play opposite styles. Liberty likes to play fast and score often. Crestview likes to slow down and be deliberate in the half-court.

The first quarter was back and forth, as Crestview looked to make a statement early with some quick shots. Proving they could play fast as well. Unfortunately for them, they could never get the game to slow down to their pace. Liberty gradually extended their lead as the quarters went on. One of the big keys for Liberty was their three-point shooting. The Leopards hit seven threes on the night. They were also able to force plenty of live-ball turnovers that gave them easy fast-break opportunities.

When Crestview has success it was down low. Krista Perry earned every point she had as she was fighting a great rebounding Leopard squad. The Rebels got quite a few good looks from three throughout the night, but just couldn’t get them to fall at a good enough pace.

Crestview made one last surge as the fourth quarter opened. They cut the lead under single digits to nine. But then the Leopards’ ability to score a lot of points quickly showed itself as they rattled off eight points in about a minute and a half. The Leopards speed proved to be too much for Crestview as they ran away with the win tonight 64-46.

Krista Perry has a strong 18 point performance for the Rebels. She added 7 rebounds. Tanner Hoffer grabbed a double-double with 13 points 11 rebounds

The Rebels return to action Saturday as they travel to Champion.

FITCH RALLIES TO WIN BATTLE OF THE BIRDS

AUSTINTOWN, OH- Mooney had Austintown Fitch right where they wanted them in the first quarter with a 6-point lead.

Then the Falcons let it fly.

Fitch came back from the deficit in the second quarter that included a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Kris Brown to give the Falcons a 29-28 at the break.

The Falcons have already been labeled a second-half team early this season because of their strong performances in the first two games, and Tuesday was no different.  Fitch outscored the Cards 16-6 in the third frame with a stout defensive effort to keep Mooney off the boards.

Leading the way for Fitch (2-1) was Todd Simons 27 points, 8 rebounds alongside a strong showing from Nate Leskovac’s 13 points and 4 rebounds.  Devin Sherwood and Kris Brown added double-digits to the scoreboard with 10-point efforts, respectively.

For Mooney (1-2), Mike Pelini had an outstanding game with 21 points, and Devon Jenkins controlled the boards early and finished with 11 points.

Cardinal Mooney will return the YSN airwaves next Friday against Boardman, while Austintown Fitch will take on Tallmadge at home on Friday with tipoff around 7pm.

LADY POLAR BEARS FREEZE FITCH FOR FIRST LOSS

AUSTINTOWN, OH- The Massillon Jackson Lady Polar Bears made the trip to Fitch High School for a Saturday showdown, and they walked away with an impressive victory over the Lady Falcons, 55-26.

The Falcons started the scoring for the game, but that was as far as their lead would stretch as Jackson was deadly from outside. The Lady Falcons trailed only by 7 at the half but were only able to put up a single tally in the 3rd quarter offensively, and Jackson took advantage.

Senior Daria Williams led the way at both ends of the court as she had 12 points and was the Fitch top scorer, and was aggressive on defense limiting the points inside the paint.

Fitch drops to 3-1 on the year and will travel to East on Wednesday to take on their cross-town rivals.

CRESTVIEW FALLS TO SOUTHERN

COLUMBIANA, OH- If you take a look at the Crestview Rebels from last year to this year, the change is evident.  With the changes made in the offseason to the coaching staff and the success of other sports in the school, you can see the progress on the basketball court.

It just so happens that on Friday, that team ran into Southern Local.  The Indians were able to take care of business to the tune of 62-38, and remain unbeaten on the year.

Southern sits where Crestview aspires to be in the future.  Players who have had time to gel by playing consistently with one another over the last 3-4 years.  Standout athletes like Cam Grodhaus and the Sloan brothers highlight an overly impressive team.  Grodhaus was able to put up 29 points on the evening with calculated play from inside and outside the 3-point line.  Brock Smalley supplemented the Indian offense with 11 tallies.

For Crestview, Junior Drake Golden led the way in the paint with 28 points and 12 boards.  Anthony Cusick had 5 points and 2 rebounds while Matt Strank scored a bucket for the Rebs.

The Rebels (0-3) must now gear up for AAC play next week when they host Liberty at home on Friday.
