LADY RAIDERS NE8 DEBUT SPOILED BY BULLDOGS

The Raiders volleyball team lost their first conference match of the year Tuesday night to Lakeview in 4 sets (25-23 13-25 19-25 22-25)

The Raiders won a back and forth set 1 as they took advantage of poor hitting by the Bulldogs. The Raiders tallied 10 kills in set 1 and Anna Primavera had 6 of them. The Raiders also only surrendered 3 attack errors which helped them win set 1 25-23.

In set 2 the Bulldogs found a hole in the Raiders defense and exploited it. The soft attacks to the middle of the court were the poison of choice as the Dawgs ran away with set 2 13-25. The Raiders only had 5 kills and also 5 errors to hit 0% in that set.

In set 3 the Raiders were hitting better much like set 1, however the soft attack of Lakeview was still giving the Raider defense fits. Junior Abby George came up huge in that set with 3 kills and 3 blocks. The Raiders were tied at 18-18 but Lakeview rattled off 6 points in a row to take a 18-24 lead and eventually the set 19-25.

In set 4 the Raiders acquired their first lead since the beginning set of the game 15-14 but Lakeview would storm back. Emily Irons working as an outside hitter while not setting was able to gather 3 kills during set 4 which was a tight affair, the Bulldogs would rally late to take it 22-25 and the match 3-1.

Anna Primavera now dubbed “Prime Time” showed off in her YSN broadcast debut earning a double double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Abby George had 8 kills and 3 blocks. Jenna Barbessi with 7 kills. Drew Feren lead in assists with 14 while Emily Irons had 9. Mary Kuhns was solid in the back row with 16 digs. The Raiders return to action Thursday night at Poland.

LADY RAIDERS BUMPED IN HOME OPENER BY URSULINE

CANFIELD, OH- The Raider Volleyball team welcomed in the Ursuline Irish in their home opener Monday night. The Raiders dropped a tough 5 set match (25-20 20-25 17-25 25-18 11-15)

In set 1 the Raiders hit the ground running. Izzy Lamparty collected 3 blocks in the set to establish a strong Raider defense. Junior Anna Primavera notched 3 service aces in a row to give the Raiders a strong lead that they would ride to a 25-20 set 1 victory.

In set 2 the Irish rebounded with a strong defense that held the Raider hitters to only 5 kills. The Raiders helped out with 6 attack errors as well. Izzy Lamparty tallied 2 more blocks but the Raiders dropped the set 20-25.

After the first couple points in set 3, Izzy Lamparty went down and had to leave the game. The Raiders struggled to find a rhythm in a new rotation as they committed 8 attack errors. The Raiders dropped set 3 17-25

With their backs against the wall, the Raiders were up for the challenge in set 4. The Raiders were able to gather 9 kills in the set 3 from Primavera. The Raiders got back to work on their net defense as sophomore Abby George stepped up with 3 blocks that slowed down the Irish momentum. The Irish fought off 4 set points but the Raiders took the set 25-18.

In the decisive 5th set the Raiders and Irish traded points to get to 7-7. Back to back attack errors from the Raiders have the Irish some breathing room and they were able to wiggle away with a 15-11 match-clinching set 5 victory.  

As a team, the Raiders were held to a hitting percentage under .100 mostly attributed to strong back row defense from the Irish. As a team, the Raiders finished with 13 service aces. Anna Primavera lead the Raiders with 10 kills and also tallied 7 service aces. The newcomer to the varsity lineup Abby George finished with 7 kills 3 blocks and a dig. Mary Kuhns finished with 15 digs. Drew Ferren led the Raiders in assists with 15. The Raiders return to action Tuesday traveling to Fitch.
