RAIDERS STAY STREAKING SLAY DRAGONS

South Range extended their winning streak to 5 games with a four set victory over Niles Tuesday night (25-21 25-14 21-25 25-15).

In the first set the Raiders got off to a rough start hitting in set one. All season they’ve continued to find ways to get points during hitting slumps and this set was no different. Despite hitting just .059 the Raiders picked up set one 25-21.

In the second set, the Raiders offense got going. They were able to drastically raise their hitting percentage and keep themselves in system. That, in turn, kept the Dragons out of system and caused them to send over a lot of free balls. The Raiders cruised to a 25-14 set two victories.

In set three Niles flipped the script of the set prior. They were the ones swinging with high efficiency and keeping the Raiders out of system. Despite hitting a steady .118 the Raiders weren’t able to keep the Dragons from forcing a fourth set, Niles took it 25-18.

The Raiders bounced back brilliantly in set number four. They aggressively jumped out to a big lead early and never gave it up. With maybe the best set the Raiders have had all season, they had an attack percentage of .308. The Raiders only had 2 attack errors in the set. They flew by the Dragons to claim the match with a 25-15 win.

Anna Primavera led the offense with 8 kills, 10 digs, and 2 aces. Marina Schneider had a strong performance as well with 6 kills, 3 digs, and 2 aces. Emily Irons had 26 assists, 7 kills, and 6 digs. Reagan Irons had 11 digs, 4 kills, and 2 aces.

RAIDER BLOCK PARTY OVERWHELMS BLUE JAYS

South Range  welcomed in a strong Jackson Milton team into their gym Monday night. The Raiders flexed their muscles with a sweep of the Blue Jays (25-21 25-16 26-24).

Out of the gates the Raiders looked strong. They were passing really well and getting plenty of attacks over the net. The trouble was, the Blue Jay defense was playing solid defense. The Raiders struggled to get kills in the first set. They instead used tough serving to gain a comfortable advantage and hold off Jackson Milton in a tight first set 25-21.

In set two, the Raiders attacks started hitting the floor. They went the whole set without an attack error and finished with a hitting percentage of .281. They rolled in set two 25-16.

Attack errors caught up with Raiders in set number 3 as they opened with 5 consecutive attack errors. This allowed the Blue Jays to storm ahead to a big early lead. However, after a timeout the Raiders attack got back on track and they rallied to take a close third set, and the sweep. 26-24.

Izzy Lamparty recorded a double double tonight and was superb on the block. She finished with 11 kills and 11 blocks. Anna Primavera had 8 kills, 7 aces, and 5 digs. Emily Irons had 25 assists, and 4 kills. Reagan Irons had 13 digs.

SPARTANS SURVIVE RAIDER RALLY

The South Range Volleyball team dropped a thrilling five set match to Boardman Wednesday night. (25-18 13-25 21-25 25-20 5-15)

The Raiders got out to a strong start in set 1 with their best hitting percentage of the night at .241. South Range also was strong at the net collecting 7 blocks in the set. They won the set 25-18.

Boardman retaliated with their strongest set of the match. Using the powerful tandem of Katie Stamp and Kennedy Paige the Spartans rolled in set two. 25-13.

The third set was more of the same story with the Spartans using their advantage at the middle block to dominate. The Raiders really helped out in the set hitting -.031. Despite their hitting struggles, the Raiders managed to claw back in the set late before eventually dropping it 25-21.

The Raiders used the momentum gained at the end of set three to get out on the right foot in set four. After being held without a kill for two straight sets Anna Primavera found success gathering 4 kills in the set. The Raiders hit .125 as a team which was an improvement from the previous set. The Spartans showed toughness, however, turning a 20-14 Raider lead into a 22-20 lead. Izzy Lamparty got a big kill from the middle to get the Raiders back the ball and they never looked back, taking set four 25-20.

The first four points of the decisive set five went back and forth leaving the teams deadlocked. A controversial call went Boardmam’s way and the momentum gained from that let them go on a 7-0 run. Their net defense kept the Raiders offense in check and fittingly the final point of the match was a block by Stamp.

The Raiders have their best defensive match of the season gathering 50 digs as a team. Reagan Irons lead in that category with 14, Anna Primavera was right behind her with 13. The Raiders have 3 players with 7 kills, Anna Primavera, Izzy Lamparty, and Abby George. Emily Irons gathered 28 assists, 12 digs, and a kill.

The Raiders return to action hosting Hubbard on Thursday night. The Spartans will await Howland on Tuesday at Boardman.

INDIANS PUSH PAST RAIDERS

The South Range volleyball team dropped a four set match to Girard Tuesday night (25-23 16-25 17-25 21-25).

Girard got out to a strong start in set one holding at least a 3 point lead most of the way. The Raiders caught just to stay in striking distance not letting the lead get larger than 5. Late in the set, Girard have the Raiders an opening , and they took it. They went on a 12-6 run to close a set one victory 25-23.

The power of Girard, especially from the service line started to take its toll on the Raiders in set two. Natalie Pallone served up a big rally in the middle of the set giving the Indians control in the set. Helped out by 5 service errors in the set by the Raiders, Girard cruised to a set two win. 25-16.

The defense of the Indians led by senior captain Lexi Cochran was a clear advantage as the third set went on. Cochran and the Indians back row made kills come at a premium for the Raiders offense. Attack errors also hurt the Raiders, who hit in the negatives for the set. The Indians rolled again 25-17.

In set 4 both teams started shaky. Trading service errors, or attack errors leaving the set tied for the first 10 points. However, with Natalie Pallone serving another big rally Girard was able to gain a comfortable lead. The Raiders were able to come all the way back though using soft touches at the net to neutralize the Indian block. Girard was able to buckle down and get 5 of the last 6 points and seal the match with a 25-21 win in set four.

Anna Primavera had 10 kills for the Raiders, Emily Irons had 21 assists, and Reagan Irons had 13 digs.

RAIDERS KEEP POLAND AT BAY

The South Range volleyball team won a thrilling four-set match over Poland. (25-23 25-22 22-25 25-21)

In the first set, the two teams went back and forth as the Bulldogs used excellent back row defense to stay close to the Raiders.  However, with setpoint and Poland rallying it was senior Anna Primavera coming up the set clinching kill.

The second set unfolded much like the first.  Both teams were clawing and fighting to keep balls alive which made extra long rallies impossible. Poland saw their biggest lead of the evening slip away, and the Raiders snuck out with a set two win.

It seemed with a 2-0 advantage the Raiders would have all the momentum in set three, but that was not the case. The Raiders had their worst hitting set with an attack percentage of .031. Poland took full advantage of this and captured a thrilling third set forcing a fourth.

Poland came out strong in set number four with a 6-0 rally. The Raiders found their wag back, however, and before the Bulldogs could blink it was tired at 9-9. Like the sets before them, this one went back and forth. Izzy Lamparty put the match away with a monster kill.

Anna Primavera had 12 kills on the night for the Raiders adding 8!digs, and 2 aces. Izzy Lamparty had 8 kills. Emily Irons gathered 29 assists, 3 kills, and 3 digs. Reagan Irons led the team in digs with 9.
