BADGER EARNS ANOTHER HOME GAME

KINSMAN, OHIO- Badger took on Fairport in round one of the Division IV boys basketball tournament. The Braves got off to an early spark as they were led by Duncan Moy, who drilled three of the seven three pointers that the Braves had in the first half. The Braves led the Skippers 36-25 at the half.

The Braves kept up on the defensive side in the second half as Brad Hamilton and Lewis Flowers stuck on their assignments and forced several turnovers and steals. Duncan Moy led the Braves overall in scoring with 33 points. James Gadomski kept the Skippers in the game with 20 points but the Braves ran away at the end, defeating the Skippers 72-59.

The Braves will move onto the Sectional Final to take on Springfield this Friday at home.

A LITTLE EXTRA GREXA

KINSMAN, OHIO- The Badger Braves girls basketball have had a memorable season. A season that has brought them their first NAC championship in 38 years and as well as a player that has reached the 1,000 career point achievement. That player, Katie Grexa has been leading this Braves team all year long. Grexa has been apart of a Braves team that has been dominant all year long, especially on the defensive side.

Grexa is completely grateful of her teammates and as well as her coaches and her family that have guided her throughout her entire high school career. Grexa, only a junior will have an entire senior year along with the rest of this year to accomplish so much more. The Braves will take on Sebring on Saturday in the Sectional final of the Division IV girls state tournament.

Katie Grexa had the oppurtunity to sit down with YSN’s Matt Morrison to talk about the upcoming matchup and as well as her accomplishments and her future goals. Check out this exclusive interview only on YSN!

BADGER KEEPS MOVING ON

KINSMAN, OHIO- The Badger Lady Braves took on the Sebring Lady Trojans in the Sectional Final of the Division IV girls tournament. The Braves went off as they were led by Katie Grexa, with 14 points and 3 steals. The Braves were overwhelming for the Trojans as they led 32-4 at the half.

In the second half the Braves picked up right where they left off not only on the offensive side but on the defensive side as well as they came away with 25 steals.

Hannah Betts also had a solid outing for the Braves as she had 10 points and 2 steals as the Braves went on to win 65-10. The Braves will now move on to the District Semi Final to take on the Mathews Mustangs.

BADGER STARTS THEIR RUN THE RIGHT WAY

KINSMAN, OHIO- The Badger Lady Braves took on the Valley Christian Lady Eagles in round one of the Division IV girls tournament. In what was a memorable night for the Braves in two ways. One being that Katie Grexa surpassed the 1,000 point mark and the other being the 50th career win for Badger coach Lavell Turnage.

The Braves controlled the game quickly as they were led by Katie Grexa, with 22 points and by Hannah Betts, with 11 points. The Eagles kept pace for a little bit as they were led by DiAndra Tensley and Samantha Newkirk, who combined for 12 points but the Braves would come out with the 57-16 win to move onto the second round, which will take place this Saturday when they take on Sebring.

BADGER BREAKS UP THE ROCKETS TAKEOFF

VIENNA, OHIO- The Badger Braves traveled to take on their arch rival, the Mathews Mustangs. Duncan Moy led the Braves once again as he dropped 21 points. Moy also had help from Cole “Magic Man” Burnett, who finished the game with 12 points, including going 6 for 6 from the free throw line. The Braves had a 17 point lead going into the half.

The Mustangs came roaring back as Ethan Petak, who dropped 20 points, led the way and the Mustangs managed to tie the Braves in the fourth quarter. In the end the Braves escaped once again beating the Mustangs 59-51.

The Badger Braves now move to a record of 15-4 and will take on the Pymatuning Valley Lakers on Monday.

BADGER BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JOSH UPSHIRE

KINSMAN, OHIO- The ride of the Badger Braves Boys Basketball team has definetly been a thrilling one. The Braves had the hot start of the season starting 10-0, being led by seniors Brad Hamilton and Cole Burnett and as well as Junior standout, Duncan Moy. The Braves also have a pair of scrappy freshman, Preston Geracitano and Lewis Flowers, who have certainly made a splash. After the 10-0 start, the Braves had a couple bumps in the road and now stand at a record of 14-4.

Tournament play is just around the corner and Badger Braves Head Coach, Josh Upshire is doing the best he can at keeping his guys calm and collected to finish the regular season and then heading into tournament play. Coach Upshire took time to sit down with YSN’s Matt Morrison, who has being covering the Braves all year, to talk about the tournament play and things that need to be worked out to keep the thrilling ride of the Badger Braves season going! A CHAMPIONSHIP 38 YEARS IN THE MAKING

SOUTHINGTON, OHIO- The NAC championship came down between the Badger Braves and the Chalker Wildcats. After a little bit of a shaky start, the Braves got back on track and after a buzzer beater three pointer by Katie Grexa, they led the Wildcats 22-11.

The Wildcats tried to keep pace, but the Braves defense kept a strong hold. The Braves were led by Katie Grexa with 15 points. Bree Huscroft and Gabby Miller combined for 12 points, and Addison Thompson added 8 points, along with a great night defensively. The Braves pulled away from the Wildcats to win 43-28, winning their first NAC championship in 38 years.

The Braves started the year with just a 1-4 record and then proceeded to win 17 games in a row, with the first win of their streak coming against Chalker. The Braves will go for 18 in a row to finish the season strong, when they take on Girard next Thursday.

MAPLEWOOD CRASHES THE BADGER PARTY

KINSMAN, OHIO- The Maplewood Rockets came into town on senior night to take on the Badger Braves. In a game that meant so much for the Braves and their NAC championship run, it was a game that was back and forth the entire way.

The Braves were led by Duncan Moy, who dropped 26. The Rockets kept up with the Braves with a lot of second attempt shots and by the hot hand Andrew Barnett, who dropped 6 three pointers on his way to a 24 point performance. The Rockets pulled away at the end just enough to slide pass the Braves 59-56.

With the loss the Braves are now out of contention to win the NAC championship, but will try to finish off the season strong and try to get prepared for tournament play.

The Braves will be back in action when they travel to Pymatuning Valley this Friday to take on the Lakers.

BADGER LOOKS AHEAD TO NAC CHAMPIONSHIP

KINSMAN, OHIO- The Badger Braves took on the Mathews Mustangs on Senior Night. It was a valuable team effort for both sides tonight as well as a back and forth game.

The Mustangs were led by Brooke Bauer, who dropped 14 points for the Mustangs. Ava Clayton also chipped in 11 more points for the Mustangs as they led the Braves 24-19 at the Half. The Braves made some adjustments during halftime and went to work as soon as the second half started. Hannah Betts and Katie Grexa combined for 28 points and Bree Huscroft dropped another 12, including 4 three pointers, 3 of which came in the 3rd quarter alone.

The Mustangs tried to keep up but exhaustion and foul trouble kept them from it and the Braves pulled away to win their 16th game in a row and will take on Chalker on the road this Thursday for the NAC championship.

BADGER FINDS A WAY IN NON CONFERENCE PLAY

NILES OH- Saturday afternoon was a big game for the Lady Braves of Badger and former Ursuline Irish basketball star and now coach Lavell Turnage they got their 15th straight win against the Lady Niles McKinley Red Dragons, winning 62-47.   

 

The game had a few lineup changes as Gabriella Miller who’s originally in the starting five got hurt in the JV game and was replaced.  Katie Grexa was also banged up throughout the game but finished with 21 points, being the leading scorer.  On the side of Niles, it was Katie Heinselman who finished with 11 points.  

 

Niles, will head on the road to play rival Hubbard while Badger will host rival Mathews. After the game, Ian O’Brien caught up with coach Turnage and player of the game Katie Grexa on the performance and what to expect before the tournament.
