CARDINALS BLANK WHETSTONE IN MYRTLE OPENER

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- Jameson Beck shut down Whetstone, throwing a complete game shutout and leading Canfield to a 12-0 victory on Monday night.

Ben Slanker led the Cards to victory by driving in four runs. Slanker went 3-for-4 at the plate. Slanker drove in runs on a single in the first, a single in the second, and a triple in the fourth.

Canfield notched six runs in the second inning. The offensive onslaught by the Cards was led by Slanker, Zain Jadallah, Stephen Maszczak, Tanner Stricko, and AJ Havrilla, who each had RBIs in the inning.

A single by Ethan Alder in the second inning was a positive for Whetstone.

Beck got the win for Canfield. The righthander lasted five innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out eight.

Drew Burelson took the loss for Whetstone. The pitcher lasted one inning, allowing five hits and seven runs while striking out one.

Slanker went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Canfield in hits. The Cards stole six bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Stricko led the way with two.

TWO BIG TEAMS, NO BIG DEAL FOR LOUISVILLE

LOUISVILLE, OHIO- 

GAME 1:

Cole Miller threw a gem on Saturday for Louisville, allowing zero runs and besting Archbishop Hoban by a score of 2-0.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Miller struck out three, while Archbishop Hoban pitchers sat down two. Miller earned the victory on the hill for Louisville. The righthander allowed three hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out three.

Karson Siegfried went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Leopards in hits.

Louisville will Chardon in their second game of the day. Hoban will also take on Chardon for their second game of the day as well. 

GAME 2:

 In their second game of the day, Louisville defeated Chardon 4-2. 

 Bryce Graziani took the win for the Leopards. The bulldog allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out four and walking one.

Austin Leszynski went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Chardon in hits. Mason Wolf led things off on the hill for Chardon. The hurler allowed five hits and four runs over four innings, striking out three. Brandon Fatur threw two innings in relief.

Louisville racked up seven hits in the game. Morley and Andrew Corona each managed multiple hits. Morley led Louisville with three hits in three at bats. Louisville will host St. Vincent-St. Mary on Tuesday.

PATELLIS TOSSES NO-NO; CANFIELD SCULPTS CLAY

CANFIELD, OH- Canfield Junior Michael Patellis was brilliant on the mound on Saturday, as Patellis threw a no-hitter to lead Canfield past Clay 14-0.

Senior, AJ Havrilla led the Cardinals to victory by driving in four runs. Havrilla went 3-for-3 at the plate. Havrilla drove in runs on a double in the second, a double in the fifth, and a single in the sixth.

Canfield put up seven runs in the sixth inning. The rally was led by singles by Zain Jadallah, Havrilla, Ethan Prout, Ben Slanker, and Patellis, a walk by David Murphy, and a fielder’s choice by Jack Davis.

Patellis pitched Canfield to victory. The right-hander lasted six innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out ten.

Canfield tallied 13 hits. Havrilla, Patellis, Slanker, Logan Cayavec, and Jadallah each racked up multiple hits for the Cardinals Havrilla went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the way in hits.

CLIPPERS FLY HIGH PAST LEETONIA

COLUMBIANA, OH- Columbiana defeated Leetonia handily 34-0 on Wednesday as five pitchers combined to throw a shutout.

Ian Less collected four hits in six at-bats to help lead the Clippers to victory. Less singled in the first, singled in the second, singled in the fourth, and singled in the fourth.

In the first inning, Columbiana got their offense started. Alex Eusebio drew a walk, scoring one run.

Columbiana put up 15 runs in the fourth inning. Maxx Grommes, Devin Daugherty, Colin Keleman, Less, Max Conway, and Dylan Hogan each had RBIs in the big inning.

One bright spot for the Bears was a single by Ashten Houlette in the first inning.

Eusebio earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound for the Clippers. The pitcher went one inning, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out one, and walking zero. Keleman, Daugherty, and Less all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team toward victory.

Anthony Hall started the game for Columbiana. The southpaw surrendered zero runs on one hit over one inning, striking out two and walking zero

Columbiana racked up 25 hits on the day. Less, Keleman, Daugherty, Eusebio, Hogan, Cam Clancy, Bayden Pipoly, Conway, and Grommes all managed multiple hits for the Clippers. Less led Columbiana with four hits in six at-bats. Eusebio led Columbiana with three stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with nine stolen bases.

LOUISVILLE WINS A THRILLER IN EXTRAS

LOUISVILLE, OHIO- Louisville and Green played an instant classic on Tuesday as neither team could score in regulation.  The Leopards scored in extra innings to defeat the Bulldogs 1-0.

In what was a battle the whole way. Kyle Vesely led the team in hits going 2 for 3 at the plate and also scored the run that lifted the Leopards over the Bulldogs. Connor Morley was the winning pitcher of the day as he shut down Green, allowing 5 hits, and had 3 strikeouts through five innings. Nate Carr was the losing pitcher of the game as he allowed 6 hits, 1 run, and had 6 strikeouts.

Louisville will be back in action when they go on the road to play Canton Central Catholic on Wednesday. 

JFK LOOKS STRONG IN EARLY GOING

STRUTHERS, OH- Warren John F. Kennedy Catholic took the contest against Ursuline on Monday, 4-1

Ursuline got on the board in the first inning when Luca Ricchiuti drove in one when Ricchiuti singled.

In the top of the third inning, JFK tied things up at one when Aidan Rossi singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.

The Eagles pulled away for good with two runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Jake Hettrick doubled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run and Micheal Bartoe’s sac fly scored one run for JFK.

Jaden Rishel pitched the Eagles to victory. The fireballer lasted four innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out four. Hettrick threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Jack Erison led things off on the pitcher’s mound for Ursuline. The pitcher allowed two hits and three runs over four innings, striking out three and walking one. Anthony Triveri and Tom Gronner entered the game from the bullpen, throwing two innings and one inning respectively.

Hettrick led the Eagles with two hits in three at-bats. JFK was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Caleb Hadley had the most chances in the field with seven.

Ursuline saw the ball well today, racking up eight hits in the game. Ricchiuti and Johnny Cambert all had multiple hits for Ursuline. Ursuline was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Andrew Kirila made the most plays with seven.

 

FITCH HOLDS STRONG IN PITCHERS DUEL OVER BOARDMAN

AUSTINTOWN, OH- Both teams were strong on the mound Monday, but Austintown-Fitch defeated Boardman 2-1. Falcon ace, Mason Petridis allowed just five hits to Boardman.

Austintown-Fitch Varsity Falcons fired up the offense in the first inning. Carson Fuller drove in one when Fuller singled into right field to start the party.

In the top of the third inning, Boardman tied things up at one when Marty Stachowicz’s sac fly scored one run for Boardman.  Boardman would continue to apply pressure with small ball, but was unable to score besides the lone run in the third.

The Falcons pulled away for good with one run in the fourth inning. In the fourth Hayden Warmouth singled to right field on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

Petridis took the win for Fitch. The righty lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out ten and walking one.

Gavin Hyde took the loss for Boardman. The bulldog lasted six innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking one.

Fuller, Rocco DiFlorio, Warmouth, and Frank Senediak each collected one hit to lead Austintown-Fitch. The Falcons didn’t commit a single error in the field. Jake Wallace had ten chances in the field, the most on the team.

Boardman was led offensively by Stachowicz’s RBI, but hits were supplied by Gavin Hyde, Charlie Young, Landon Whippo, and Grayson Eicher.

The two teams will tie up again in Boardman Tuesday afternoon at 5pm to complete the season series.

 

CANFIELD BASEBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH GARY KNITTLE

CANFIELD, OH- After a tough loss to end the 2022 campaign, the Cardinals are loaded up and are on a mission in 2023.  Leading the way once again is veteran Coach, Gary Knittle and a great staff of stickball experts alongside of the skipper.

With some high-end returners making their way back into the lineup this year, Coach Knittle is optimistic about this team and their goals in the year ahead.

YSN’s DJ Yokley sat down with Coach Knits for a 1 on 1 to talk about the Cards in 2023 on the opening day episode of Canfield Coach’s Corner with Gary Knittle.

CANFIELD NOT PHASED BY DAY LONG DELAY

CANFIELD, OHIO – After taking an extra day to complete, the Canfield Cardinals finally finished their game from Wednesday night, knocking off Warren Harding 8-2. In the first inning on Wednesday, Canfield jumped on Harding right away as they put up a four spot.

Ben Slanker drove in two runs on an RBI double. Canfield then put up for more runs in the third inning where Scottie Eaton, Stephen Maszczak, Jameson Beck, and AJ Havrilla all produced RBI’s in the inning. Michael Patellis started the game on the hill for the Cardinals, going on and two-thirds innings giving up two runs on one hit and fanning two Raiders batters.

The winning pitcher was Eaton as his stat line reads four hits given up, no runs allowed, striking out two, and two walks. Noah Anzevino got two innings of work out of the bullpen.

Canfield will return to the diamond on Friday at 5:00 p.m. to pay a visit to the Lakeview Bulldogs.

POTTERS PACE THE WAY IN OPENER

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- The East Liverpool Potters snatched the lead late in the game in a 9-3 victory over Edison on Wednesday. The game was tied at two with East Liverpool Varsity Potters batting in the bottom of the fifth when Anderson Fitch doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs to clinch the first win of the season for the Potters.

East Liverpool got on the board in the second inning. Arron Direonger grounded out but drove in a run.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Potters tied things up at two. Fitch hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring one run.

Malachi Reed was on the mound for East Liverpool. Reed surrendered three runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out three.

Bryce Rodger led things off on the pitcher’s mound for Edison. The hurler went five innings, allowing six runs on six hits, striking out three, and walking one.

East Liverpool racked up eight hits in the game. Fitch, Evan Tice, Reed, and Mason Ludwig each managed multiple hits for the Potters. Ludwig, Reed, Tice, and Fitch each managed two hits to lead East Liverpool.

Bryce Rodgers went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Edison in hits.
