LADY BULLDOGS BOUNCE BACK; TOPPLE TIGERS

WELLSVILLE, OH- If you have talked to East Palestine Head Coach Will Franklin over the course of the last week, he’s been anxiously awaiting his team’s return to the court.  After last Thursday’s loss to Leetonia, East Palestine was looking for an outlet for frustration, and a chance to show who they are.  Unfortunately for Wellsville, they were the first obstacle in the wake, and East Palestine bounced back in a big way for a 71-39 victory.

It’s been a week since the Lady Dogs took the floor, as their game with Southern was postponed on Monday due to weather (will be made up February 5th.) So, it’s been long practices that have left East Palestine doing some soul-searching about how they want this season to go.

On Thursday, the fire was back.

Three Lady Dogs finished in double figures including Joclyn Fristik with 19, Paige Snyder with 18 and 10 boards, and Patience Champney with a dozen.  Payton Sherry had a double-double with 10 assists and 11 boards to go along with 6 points.  Morgan Rutledge had 3 blocks, 3 steals, and 4 points as well.

For Wellsville, Cameron Carlevale had 10 points and Hunter Weekley had 9 for the Tigers.

The Lady Bulldogs (3-3, 1-1) will get a day’s rest before lacing up for the Battle of the Borders Tournament on Saturday at Noon in the Dog Pound.  Wellsville (2-4, 0-3) will tie up with Edison on December 30th at 7pm on the road.

SLOW START LEADS TO BIG FINISH FOR COLUMBIANA

COLUMBIANA, OH- There were many left scratching their heads after the first quarter ended and the Lady Clippers had a 4-1 lead over United.  Both teams were slow out of the locker room to start things but turned up the scoring the rest of the way, but in the end, Columbiana and the press was too much for United as the Clippers scurried away with a 43-31 victory.

United scored 15 in the second frame and went into the half trailing by just one, but we presume to be a stellar halftime speech from Coach Crismon gave his Clippers plenty of fuel, and a 19 point explosion happened in the third quarter to provide separation.  Senior Kayla Muslovski set the tone with 19 points on the night, which was supplemented by great efforts on both ends of the floor from Grace Hammond (15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) Karissa Tringhese (3 points) and Tori Long (6 points.)

The Lady Eagles were paced by Bailey Boosz who had 11 points and 3 rebounds, and Celeste Hofmeister who had a 7-point evening.

Columbiana (4-3, 3-0) will enjoy their break until after the New Year where they’ll play Leetonia at home on January 2nd.  United will head to Lowellville Saturday to take on the Lady Rockets.

LADY REBELS FLEX AGAINST BROOKFIELD

COLUMBIANA, OH- If you look “grit” up in the dictionary, there’s bound to be a reference to the 2019-2020 Crestview Lady Rebel Basketball Team.  OK, maybe not literally, but there should be.  Especially after the slow start to the evening, the Lady Rebs were determined to pick up a key win at home and did just that to the tune of 50-22 over Brookfield.

Crestview shot 35% from the field and went 3/16 from beyond the arc, but were still able to find big transition buckets and HUGE rebounding opportunities that turned into buckets.  In fact, the Rebels- as they’ve done each game this year, outrebounded their opponents.  Against Brookfield, it was a 37-21 advantage for Crestview.

Point Park recruit, and Senior Rebel- Tanner Hoffer had an explosive night with 15 points and 9 boards along with 3 steals.  Krista Perry also chipped in on the victory with 14 points, 9 boards, 4 assists, and a steal.  Mara Halas made a triumphant return to the lineup with 10 points, 3 caroms, and 3 helpers as well.

Crestview goes to 4-2 on the young season, and will now take on Hubbard on Saturday at 1:30.

CALL HER GRETCH

EAST PALESTINE, OH- As one of three seniors on the Lady Bulldogs Basketball Team, Kenzee Johnston is one who appreciates where she is this season.  Trying to take on more and more responsibility for the team, while passing on tips and opportunities for growth in her teammates for the years to come.

With Johnston on her way to her third Varsity letter and a crucial part of last year’s impressive 17-win squad, Kenzie is all business but looks to be having the time of her life.  Even when she’s upset, she has a signature smile that drives her opponents batty.  A Hines Ward-esque quality that few possess and even less can master.

We caught up with the Senior Leader for the Lady Dogs for this week’s East Palestine Player Profile.  She goes by Kenzee, but her friends CALL HER GRETCH.

SPARTANS STAY PERFECT; ICE LAKE

BOARDMAN, OH- Boardman hosted a very hard-nosed Uniontown Lake team and came out on top with a convincing 64-43 victory.

After a back and forth first half, the Spartans blew the game open in the 3rd quarter with Tommy Fryda leading the charge. Fryda had 14 points in the quarter, including 4 from long distance. He finished with a game-high 17 points to go with 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Derrick Anderson continued to produce big numbers with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Daeone Martin came up big for the Spartans with 13 points, including 7/7 from the free-throw line. Martin also grabbed 4 rebounds.

Charlie Davis battled all night, coming away with 5 points. Ethan Andersen was once again a big defensive force with 3 blocks, 5 rebounds, and 4 points while challenging and changing many other shots around the rim. Joey Zahran provided big minutes, coming away with 4 points. Zach Ryan and Connor Miller were all over the floor causing numerous plays to happen. They both scored 2 points and led a great defensive effort. Ryan also had 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 4 assists. Ty Ventresco rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

EAST PALESTINE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH WILL FRANKLIN

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Coming off the most successful year in recent history, and Coach Franklin’s most successful as the Head Coach, the Lady Bulldogs are looking to build on a 17-win season just a year ago.  It won’t be an easy road, but it’s certainly attainable.

The Lady Dogs are brushing off a tough loss to Leetonia that left them wanting nothing more than to get back on the hardwood, but the weather kept that from happening early this week.  With an EOAC battle on Thursday and a holiday tournament at home on Saturday, EP needs to right the ship quickly to help build toward the thick of their schedule post-holiday.

We caught up with Coach “Frank” to discuss the opportunities ahead as well as what he’s looking to build upon this season.

All that and more on this week’s episode of East Palestine Coach’s Corner with Will Franklin.

CLIPPERS BATTLE IN SECOND HALF TO SHAKE QUAKERS

SALEM, OH- Columbiana survived a scare from Salem on Tuesday.  The Quakers were eager for their first victory of the season against their neighbors of Route 14, but the second-half surge propelled the Clippers to a 70-57 victory.

Coach Johnson’s Clippers were able to post 40 points in the second half when they had just a 2-point lead going into the locker room.

Credit the Quakers with the ability to keep pace with one of the area’s most veteran teams, as Salem is quickly raising eyebrows as a team that is not to be looked over.  Kaleb Caldwell had another impressive outing for Salem with 16, along with Jaren Snyder contributing double digits with 13.

For Columbiana, 3 players were in double figures with Carter Pasco leading the way with 19.  Matt Mazei kept the lane on lockdown with 16 of his own while Sean Whitehead posted 10.

The Clippers will return to action Friday at United while Salem prepares for Springfield Saturday night at 7pm.

FROM DOWNTOWN; BEAVER LOCAL RUNS PERIMETER TO BEAT EDISON

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- The Beavers used the three-point shot en route to their 79-67 home victory over the Edison Wildcats. This was another tale of 2 halves.

To start the game, both teams went on run after run as Edison held the lead after one. Then, the teams traded baskets on each end as the Beavers took a 1 point lead into the locker room. After that, things started to click for the home team. The Beavers outscored Edison by 10 in the 3rd quarter and didn’t look back. Deep threes in the 4th from Josh Hilditch, Logan Reed, and Skylar Pappas helped put the game out of reach for the Wildcats and the Beavers collected their 4th win of the season.

On the stat sheet, Nathan Barber came close to a double-double (7 rebounds). In the past 2 games, Barber fell 2 boards shy of the feat and came into the night looking to finally accomplish his goal. He was on pace for it, as he had 5 boards and 9 points after the first half.

Barber will look to try it again as the Beavers (4-2)  return to action Friday at Wellsville and will return to YSN December 30, as the host Indian Valley on the Network with an approximate tip-off time of 7:00.

BERTOVICH IMPRESSES; BULLDOGS FALL SHORT

EAST PALESTINE, OH- In an impressive effort from an up-and-coming Bulldog team, it still wasn’t enough to get past EOAC powerhouse, Southern Local.  The Indians snuck away with a victory 67-54 over East Palestine Tuesday night.

For the Bulldogs, Jonathan Bertovich had one of the most impressive games of his career thus far against a stellar Indian defense.  Bertovich went off for 36 points that included a pair from beyond the arc as well as going 8-11 from the free-throw line.  For his efforts, he was named the Gorby’s Player of the Game on YSN.  Joining JB in the scoring column was Evan Smith with 5, Brandon Turcola with 6, and Westin Jones with 5.

For Southern, Brock Smalley led the way with 22, and Tanner Patterson chipped in 16 alongside Cam Grodhaus’s 13.
