KAMINSKI KNOWS HOW TO GET IT DONE

LEETONIA OH- Kayla Kaminski has put in her time as a leader of Leetonia Volleyball. You would be hard pressed to find a player who is better at lifting up her teammates. There has definitely been adversity to go through in Leetonia volleyball.  Kaminski has never wavered in leadership. That shows true strength to lead when not everything is going your way.  It’s easy to lead when you’re winning 20 games a season, but to lead when the results aren’t coming through, that’s the true sign of a captain.

Kaminski took the time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her final season as a Bear, they talk about what the goals for this team are this season, some of her favorite memories in the program, and much more. Check out the latest Leetonia Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN!

VIKINGS SECURE FIRST WIN

LEETONIA OH- In a resolute performance on the road, Waterloo secured their first victory of the season, triumphing over Leetonia with an emphatic 21-0 scoreline.

The opening quarter set the tone for Waterloo’s dominance, as Landon McClain electrified the field with a spectacular 78-yard TD return off the kickoff. Aaron Hart’s successful PAT extended their lead to 7-0.

Waterloo’s drive, starting from their own 15, was interrupted by a pivotal play when Dylan Johns intercepted the ball at Leetonia’s 6-yard line with 2:50 on the clock. Leetonia’s possession from the 6-yard line, however, faced challenges with consecutive errant snaps, leading them to punt from deep within their territory.

As the second quarter commenced, Waterloo capitalized on a short punt, taking over at Leetonia’s 20-yard line. Following a 5-yard penalty, Jaydin Hakin connected with Bobby Harouff for a 16-yard gain, positioning Waterloo at the 9-yard line. Just two plays later, Hakin himself dashed into the end zone with a 5-yard TD run, propelling Waterloo to a 14-0 lead at 10:13. Aaron Hart’s successful PAT solidified the advantage.

At halftime, Waterloo commanded a comfortable 14-0 lead, showcasing their determination on both ends of the field.

As the third quarter unfolded, Leetonia faced a turnover on downs at their own 15-yard line with 4:00 remaining. Waterloo’s ensuing possession took only three plays, with Jayden Hakin completing a 1-yard TD run at 3:39. A successful PAT widened the gap to a commanding 21-0.

The fourth quarter saw both teams battling fiercely, but neither managed to break through for any additional points, resulting in a scoreless period.

The final whistle confirmed Waterloo’s triumphant display, securing a shutout victory with a final score of 21-0.

Looking ahead, Waterloo (1-1) will return home for Week 3, where they are set to face off against Lisbon. Meanwhile, Leetonia (0-2) is geared up for a Week 3 challenge on the road against Strasburg. The victory marks a pivotal moment for Waterloo, setting the stage for an exciting journey in the coming weeks.

By Michael Wolfgang

SALINEVILLE, OHIO – On a day that was filled with rain and cloudy skies, the Southern Indians made it rain on Leetonia Monday night, blowing out the Bears 10-0.

Powering Southern to 10 runs on seven hits was Brady Ketchum who had three hits driving in six runs. Southern lacked the long ball in this game, but they had three other players that helped Ketchum drive in runs including Aiden Spahlinger, Chuck McCulley, and Mason Pitts who each had one hit and one run batted in. Spahlinger started the game on the mound for Southern where he gave up the lone hit for Leetonia. Spahlinger went two innings, followed by McCulley and Pitts who each also went two innings, not allowing any hits. Southern will get back on the field this

Thursday as they will welcome in Western Reserve. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.

SOUTHERN DOES THEIR JOB

LEETONIA OH- Southern came in to Friday night with the possibility of an EOAC title still alive. First things first, they had to beat Leetonia.  Then the Indians would need some help from East Palestine who was playing Wellsville. The Tigers had a one game lead in the conference.  All Southern could worry about is taking care of their own business, and letting the chips fall where they may. They did just that as they rolled to a 56-33 win over the Bears.

The offensive effort for the Indians was led by Colton Soukup who finished the night with 21 points.  The rest of the Indians offense was pretty balanced. Brady Ketchum supplied 8 points to the cause.  Both William Tribello, and Chuck McCulley finished with 7 points.

THE NIGHTMARE ENDS IN HOWLAND

HOWLAND CENTER, OH – It had been a rough six-game losing streak for the Howland Tigers going into their game Tuesday with Youngstown East. In four of those games, they lost by five points or less. There was a totally different story against the Golden Bears. The Tigers would charge up for an 18-point halftime lead and would never look back as they picked up the 57-31 victory.

Despite a slow 6-6 start, Howland would pick up momentum and end the first quarter on a 10-0 run to end the period with a 16-6 edge. This would continue into the second quarter, with the Tigers scoring another 16 points, while holding East to just 8 points en route to a 32-14 halftime advantage. East would play in the Tigers in the third, making the period even with a score of 10-10, but Howland would pull away with a 14-7 advantage in the fourth, leading by as much as 29.

Nine players scored for the Tigers on the night, but what stood out for coach Dan Bubon and his team was the play of JV players TJ Douglas and Anthony Chieffo, who both played key minutes in the final three quarters. Douglas excelled on the floor, as he would actually lead all scorers with 11 on the night. Chieffo would cash in on his end, as in the first few moments of action, he drained a corner three to give him a spark, and he would end the night with 7 marks. Other scorers chipping the way for Howland were John Perry and Connor Durig, who would both finish with 8. Jose Castro led East with 7 points.

Howland (7-8) snaps a six-game losing streak dating back to January 2nd as they pick up their first victory of the 2023 calendar year. They will now get ready for an AAC rematch with Boardman at home this Friday night. The Tigers will look to split with the Spartans as they fell short in Boardman 60-46 back on January 14th. East (8-6) will stay on the road on Friday when they travel out to Warren Harding. The Bears were defeated by the Raiders last year by a score of 65-49.

UNITED LOOKING AHEAD

LEETONIA OH- United took the court Thursday night in Leetonia looking to quickly take care of business as they set their sights on their second straight EOAC title. The Eagles wasted little time showing why they are the class of the league coming away with a dominating 59-21 victory.

The United defense would frustrate the Leetonia offense forcing 17 first half turnovers creating numerous transition baskets on their way to a 37-10 halftime lead. The halftime deficit in the end would be too much for the undermanned Bears to overcome.

Grace Knight turned in a stellar performance in victory for United tallying 24 points and 6 rebounds. Madison Kibler contributed to the onslaught adding 13 points and 4 assists. Taylor Cope & Sam Lippiatt each came through with 8 points on the night for the Eagles.

Ella Gregorino would add 10 points for Leetonia, teammate McKendra Cole tallied 8.

Leetonia (3-12, 0-9) will host East Palestine on Monday. United (10-5, 9-0) has a big test on their way towards a conference crown repeat as they travel to second place Southern on Monday.
