BEAVER LOCAL GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH TONY SORGE

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- It’s basketball time once again in Beaver country. We continue our basketball previews by venturing to Beaver Local to take a look at their girls program. Last season, the Beavers were effected by CKVID more than most, and to add on to the struggle there were some injuries that held them back. That being said, now they’ve had a chance to regroup and load up for what should be a successful season.

Head coach Tony Sorge took the time this week to come on YSN’s Running Point to help us preview the season. He talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about the returning leaders, the Beaver Local community, and much more. Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Tony Sorge is live.

BEAVERS SEASON REACHES AN END

CADIZ OH- The beavers season comes to an end in the district semi-final match vs. Claymont 25-23, 21-25, 18-25, 22-25. For the beavers, Leah Riccardo had 2 aces, 6 digs and 10 points. Emma Joseph had 21 assists, 9 digs and 10 points. Brooke Talbot had 12 kills, 3 aces, 16 assists, 6 digs and 15 points. Bailey Bowersock had 7 kills, 15 digs, and 8 points. Kodi Kinsey had 2 kills, 5 assists, 16 digs and 9 points. Elizabeth Kolkowski had 11 kills, 5 digs and 3 blocks. Grace Hill had 12 kills, 2 digs, and 5 blocks. Briar Wolski had 4 kills. Madison Lowe had 2 digs and 7 points. Lexi Schrieber had 6 points.

Coach Sarah Lowe: as our season comes to an end I could not be more proud of every player in our program. Tonights matchup was a testament to all the hard work that they put in this season and the improvements they’ve made along the way. We were able to come out in the first set and jump out to a large lead before Claymont ran it back and we were able to finish it off 25-23. The next two sets were back-and-forth with a lot of good play coming from both sides of the court. Down 1-2 sets, Claymont came out to a lead in the fourth set But our athletes never backed down as they ran it all the way back. Although we did not get the outcome we were hoping for, I could not be more than proud of this group of young ladies.

Senior Kodi Kinsey: We fought long and hard to get where we were and we didn’t stop even through the last couple points. We have had an amazing season. It definitely wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but I couldn’t be more proud of our team. It’s been an honor to be a part of such an amazing program.

Senior Grace Hill; First, I want to start by saying how glad I am to have been apart of this program. We battled hard throughout the four sets. I’m so proud of us and the great season that we had.

BEAVERS LOSE WIN STREAK

WHEELING WV- The Beavers had their 7 game winning streak out to an end on Friday night, falling to the Wheeling Central Catholic Martin Knights on the road 21-7.

The Beavers got the scoring started, courtesy of a Caleb White 54 yard TD run on the first drive of the game. From then on, the moral of the story for the Beavers was self inflicted wounds. They were plagued by penalties in the first half, and the Knights took advantage, scoring two TDS in the first half on a 21 yard throw from Michael Toepfer to Jaylen Miller, and the second a Toepfer TD run. Two of those penalties brought back 35+ yard TD plays. One was a 37 yard screen pass to White called back for illegal formation, which would have given the Beavers the lead back.

The other a block in the back, which was not needed, on an 87 yard kickoff return TD by White which would have tied it at the half. The Beavers came out of the locker room with a defensive stop and a really good drive, taking the ball all the way inside the Knights 5 yard line, but a fumble at the 4 ended the drive. They would get another stop and the ball back, but a 10 yard loss on another fumble by the Beaver offense put them behind the chains, and the Knights kept the Beavers there forcing a punt. Wheeling Central Catholic dialing up the pressure all day long was another contributing factor, as the stop led to a long, time consuming and game sealing TD drive, capped off by a Cole O’Neil TD run.

The Beavers are still playoff bound, awaiting their opponent. They will be playing Friday on the road against the tbd opponent.

BEAVERS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT SECTIONAL TITLE

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- The Beavers won a sectional championship on Tuesday night, defeating the St.Clairsville Red Devils 3 sets to 0 on their home floor.

Beaver Local was able to take the first set 25-19, led on the front lines by Brooke Talbot and Grace Hill, while Kodi Kinsey held things down on the back line. Leah Riccardo was also a big contributor for the Beavers in the opening set.

The second set was much closer, as the Red Devils gave the Beavers just about everything they could handle, but the Beavers came out on top in set number 2 by a score of 25-22. Once again, it was Grace Hill controlling the front line and Kodi Kinsey controlling the back line, but it was junior Emma Joseph that was able to rack up some assists Hill, Talbot, and Riccardo in the second set.

It was more of the same for the Beavers in the third set, but the Red Devils seemed to run out of gas, as the Beavers took the final set 25-14. Briar Wolski and Eli Kolkowski were able to make their presence known in the final set, while Hill, Talbot, Kinsey, and Joseph continued to do their thing en route to the sweep and sectional championship.

The Beavers will continue their strong campaign into the district round of the OHSAA volleyball playoffs.

BEAVERS OFFENSE RUNS BY THE BROOKE

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- The offense for Beaver Local this season has been a setter’s dream. You can’t look around without seeing a dangerous weapon on the floor. Brooke Talbot has been one of those weapons al year, not just on the attack, but also with her setting ability. The senior setter has 277 assists on the season to go along with her 207 kills. She runs the offense that is so evened out, there isn’t one player putting up huge numbers, but instead a mix of multiple players putting up solid numbers. Being a setter means being a leader as well, and that is not something Brooke lacks at all. Her vocal leadership can be heard any time you enter the gym for a Beaver Local volleyball game.

Brooke has committed to continue her academic, and volleyball career at Thiel College to join some familiar faces to YSN as a Tomcat.

YSN’s Running Point was able to chat with Brooke this week about her senior season. She talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about the evenness of the Beaver’s offense, her favorite part about being a Beaver, and much more. Brooke is the second Beaver Local volleyball player to win Baird Brothers Big Dog of the Valley, so you won’t want to miss this exclusive interview.
