BEAVER LOCAL GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH TONY SORGE

EAST LIVERPOOL OH — As the girls’ basketball season approaches, Beaver Local head coach Tony Sorge is filled with a sense of optimism and determination. In the latest “Coach’s Corner,” Sorge shared insights into the team’s journey and expectations for the upcoming season.

Reflecting on last year’s challenges, Sorge discussed the significant blow the team faced with the mid-season injury of star player Peyton Roberts. “We started off slow, but we were gaining momentum and confidence until Peyton’s injury,” Sorge said. Despite the setback, the experience pushed other players to step up, setting the stage for a stronger, more cohesive team this year. Now in the new season, Sorge believes the team is “definitely further ahead” because of last year’s trials. Two returning starters, seniors Cali Sword and Tory Druschel, are expected to take on leadership roles, bringing their experience and skills to the forefront. Other key players include junior Bella McLevy, known for her defensive prowess, and sophomore Mallory Miller, who had significant varsity time last year.

Speed will be the team’s focus this season, as mentioned by Sorge. “We lost size with the graduation of our seniors, so we have to get out and play fast,” he said. The emphasis will be on using their agility to dominate the court. The schedule is packed with challenging games against top-tier teams like Union Local, Indian Creek, and East Liverpool, to name a few. Despite the tough competition, Sorge is confident, stating, “We feel that we can compete and win a lot of these games.”

The strength of the program is further bolstered by a dedicated coaching staff, extending from the youth level to varsity. Coach Sorge praised the commitment of his assistants and the quality of coaching at the middle school and youth levels, highlighting the importance of development from a young age. Beaver Local fans can catch the team in action for the first game on Friday, November 22, at home against Union Local. “We’re working hard and are excited to start the season,” Sorge concluded. The Beaver Local girls’ basketball team is poised for a competitive season, driven by lessons from the past and a unified drive to excel. Fans are encouraged to come out and support their local team as they embark on what promises to be an exciting journey.

BEAVER LOCAL BLANKS BRUINS

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- At Beaver Local’s home turf, it was a one-sided affair as they shut out Brooke with a decisive 35-0 victory, showcasing both defensive prowess and offensive firepower.

The scoring kicked off with Luke Rettos bulldozing his way into the end zone on a 2-yard rush, and Kaleb Mays nailed the extra point to start the tally for Beaver Local. The momentum didn’t stop there. Taylor Johnston, showing his versatility as both a passer and a rusher, punched in two more rushing touchdowns from 1 and 3 yards out in the second quarter.

But it wasn’t just the ground game lighting up the scoreboard; Johnston connected with Brock Severs for a 42-yard touchdown pass, demonstrating their lethal QB-receiver chemistry. The highlight of the night, though, was Brock Severs turning defense into offense with a jaw-dropping 100-yard interception return as the clock expired in the first half, electrifying the crowd and effectively putting the game out of reach.

Beaver Local dominated the stats, rolling up 310 total yards to Brooke’s 159, with a balanced attack that saw them gain 120 yards on the ground and another 190 through the air. Johnston completed a crisp 8 of 12 passes for 190 yards, targeting Severs who had a standout game with 136 receiving yards on 5 catches.

Brooke struggled to find any consistency, managing only 132 rushing yards and a paltry 27 passing yards. Dante Tulenko was a lone bright spot, grinding out 91 yards on the ground, but the team couldn’t convert these efforts into points.

Penalties were a slight blemish for both teams, but they didn’t disrupt Beaver Local’s stride as they kept their composure and discipline throughout the game.

This match wasn’t just a win for Beaver Local; it was a statement game that underscored their strengths on both sides of the ball. As for Brooke, it’s back to the drawing board to regroup and prepare for their next challenge, hopefully learning from this tough outing.

Beaver Local (1-1) will hit the road to take on St. Clairsville next Friday.
