SALINEVILLE, OH- Beaver Local traveled to Southern Local on Tuesday night and fell 63-49 to the Indians. Southern controlled the game from the get-go.

After one quarter, Southern was up 13-4, and the Indians didn’t let up the rest of the way.  things didn’t get much better for the Beavers.  The halftime score was 29-14 but the Beavers didn’t give up.  They made an attempt at a comeback, going on a 13-0 run to pull to within 2 in the 3rd quarter. They did that multiple times, but after 4 minutes, Southern regained control of the game. Forced turnovers on a full-court press and deep threes iced the game for the Indians halfway through the 4th and finished the Beavers off.

POTTERS TAKE BACK TURKEY BOWL FROM TIGERS

WELLSVILLE, OH- Just two miles of Ohio St. Rt. 7 separate Wellsville and East Liverpool’s communities, and while the bus ride for tonight’s game was a short one, the time in between football games between the two schools was large. 1964 was the last time these southern Columbiana County neighbors faced off on the gridiron. That year the top-rated show on television was The Munsters, I Want to Hold Your Hand was the No. 1 song on the charts, and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees for a World Series title.

In what used to be called the Turkey Bowl – because the two teams always faced off on Thanksgiving Day – the Potters came away with a 48-15 win at Nicholson Stadium on Senior Night for the Tigers. The Potters got things started off quickly in the first quarter with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Nick Woodyard to Timmy Neal. The Tigers responded with a six-minute drive of their own that saw quarterback Troy Carter take it in from the 1-yard line to tie things up. East Liverpool would score the next three touchdowns before Jason Tice hit pay dirt from two yards out to make the score 27-15 with 49 seconds to go in the first half. On the Potter’s next drive, Draven Crow forced a fumble giving the Tigers a first and goal inside the 10-yard line. Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn’t capitalize and went into the half with a 12-point deficit.

The second half was all East Liverpool as the Potters scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter to cap off scoring for the night. The Potters all-time leading rusher Derek Carter had a night to remember as he gained 319 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Woodyard had 107 yards and a touchdown on the ground as well. For the Tigers, Jason Tice had 45 yards and a touchdown out of the backfield, and Troy Carter went 14/27 with 130 yards through the air.

Both teams finish the year at 5-5 and out of playoff contention.

STRONG FINISH; BEAVERS SPEED PAST LEOPARDS

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- Led by seniors Ethan Lewis, Jacob Kane, & Daniel With, the Beaver Local Beavers were victorious on Senior Night on Friday with a 44-22 win over Liberty.

After both teams were stopped on fourth down on their opening possessions, the Beavers were faced with third & 8 on their own 34. Senior QB Ethan Lewis threw a short screen pass to Senior running back Jacob Kane & Kane zig-zagged through the Liberty defense 66 yards for a touchdown. A good 2 point conversion made the score 8-0 Beavers for the only score in the first quarter.

The Beavers erupted for 28 points in the second quarter. In the first minute of the second quarter Senior running back Daniel Wirth rumbled up the middle 34 yards for a touchdown to make the score 15-0. Then the Beavers attempted an onside kick which was successful as kicked Chase Flati recovered his own kick at the 50-yard line. Less than a minute later Jacob Kane scored again, this time on a 21-yard touchdown run to make the score 22-0. Then with Liberty driving near midfield with just under 3 minutes left in the first half, Beavers defensive lineman Payne Allen recovered a fumble & the Beavers went to work again. Lewis found tight end Nate Sprouse for a 9-yard touchdown catch with 45 seconds left in the first half to make the score 29-0. Then on the ensuing kickoff, the Beavers kicked it short & Joe Monte recovered on the Liberty 30. The Beavers once again took advantage of a great special teams play as they drove quickly to score again. Lewis threw his third touchdown pass as he found Logan Krulik from 5 yards out to make the score 36-0 with 18 seconds left in the first half. But Liberty did not give up. On the last play of the first half, Liberty QB Daveyon Williamson scored on a 78 yard run on the final play of the first half & scored on a 2 point conversion to make the score 36-8 Beavers at halftime.

During the third quarter, the Liberty Leopards continued to battle back. On the first possession for the Leopards in the third quarter, Liberty put together a nice drive that ended with a 28-yard touchdown run by Jaime Melton. A failed 2 point conversion made the score 36-14. On the Beavers next possession Kane fumbled & Carter Coman recovered on his own 49. On the very next play, Williamson threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Jahmel Wallace. A good 2 point conversion made the score 36-22 with 4:22 left in the third quarter.

With the home fans feeling uneasy, the Beavers finally gave their crowd something to cheer about as Kane capped a long drive with a 7 yard TD run, his second rushing TD & third of the game. A 2 point conversion was good as kicker Chase Flati threw the 2 point pass to holder Ethan Lewis for the final points of the game.

Also of note, the Beavers on a number of occasions looked towards the sidelines before a play in an effort to draw the Leopards offsides. It worked 5 times during the game.

Liberty finished the season 3-7. QB Daveyon Williamson was 4-11 for 60 yards & a touchdown while running for 165 yards on 9 carries. Jaime Melton had 69 yards on 14 carries while Chris Carpenter had 60 yards on 10 carries. Jahmel Wallace had a 51-yard touchdown reception.

The Beavers finish the 2019 campaign with a 5-5 record. Ethan Lewis saved his best for last as he went 14-21 for 221 yards & 3 touchdowns. Jacob Kane had 69 yards rushing on 18 carries & 2 touchdowns & added 4 catches for 118 yards with a receiving touchdown. Daniel Wirth ran for 106 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown & also kicked an extra point after the Beavers last touchdown of the first half. Logan Krulik & Nate Sprouse each had a touchdown reception.

Don’t worry Beavers fans the 2020 season kicked off in 301 days on August 28, 2020 as the Beavers start next season at LaBrae.

ODD WEEK, ODD RESULT FOR BEAVER LOCAL

RAYLAND, OH- The Beaver Local football team had developed an interesting pattern during the first 8 weeks of the 2019 football season. After a victory, the next game was followed by a loss, followed by a victory, then a loss, etc. So the season’s pattern up until tonight’s game was: win, loss, win, loss, win, loss, win, loss. But the visiting Martins Ferry Purple Riders altered that pattern on Friday Night as the Beavers lost 39-7.

But with how the game started with neither offense finding a rhythm, the game did have the feel of a one-sided victory by either side. The first quarter was scoreless. In fact, Martins Ferry did not register a single first down in the first quarter. Martins Ferry was set up by a Daniel Wirth fumble on the Purple Riders 5-yard line on the last play of the first quarter. To start the second quarter the Purple Riders finally started to move on a 10 play 95-yard drive. Quarterback Jack Probst & wide receiver Dasyn Hores connected on plays of 20 & 29 yards during the drive. The drive was capped off by a Chase Goff 1 yard touchdown run with 7:03 left in the second quarter, giving Martins Ferry a 7-0 lead. The Purple Riders would extend the lead when Cody Olson booted a 26-yard field goal with 45 seconds left in the second quarter, giving the visiting team a 10-0 lead at halftime.

The Beavers would get the ball first in the third quarter, but on the first play from scrimmage quarterback Tanner Johnston, fumbled the snap from center & Martins Ferry recovered on the Beavers 25. But on a 4th & 2 from the BL 17, Probst threw an interception to Ethan Lewis, who returned it to the MF 35. The Beavers would then embark on their only scoring drive of the night. The drive was highlighted by a Tanner Johnston 44 yard pass to Dylan Moore from the BL 49 to the MF 7. Two plays later on a third & goal from the 13, Johnston found Ethan Lewis in the end zone to make the score 10-7 with 7:44 left in the third.

But it was all Purple Riders after that, Martins Ferry would score two touchdowns before the end of the third quarter. On the next drive for the Purple Riders Chase Goff would score on his second 1 yard TD of the game to make the score 17-7 with 3:45 left in the third, Then after a Beavers three & out MF would score again as Jake Probst threw a 55 yard touchdown all to Logan Smith with 45 seconds in the third to make the score 24-7 Purple Riders at the end of three.

Martins Ferry would add on to the lead in the fourth quarter. With a 4th & inches on their own 19 early in the fourth, the Beavers went for the first down but Ethan Lewis, playing his usual QB position at this point, was stopped on a quarterback sneak, giving the Purple Riders the ball inside the BL 20. This led to a Cody Olson 36 yard field goal, making the score 27-7. Then on the Beaver’s next drive they were forced to punt from their own end zone, Chase Flati had his punt blocked & Richard McFarland recovered the ball in the end zone, 33-7 Purple Riders. On the Purple Riders final possession, George Hulsey scored a touchdown on a 7 yard run with less than a minute left, making the score 39-7.

For the Purple Riders Jake Probst was 9-20 for 184 yards with a touchdown & an interception. Wide receiver Dasyn Hores had 6 catches for 94 yards. Running back Logan Smith had 3 carries for 27 yards & 2 catches for 82 yards & a touchdown. Chase Goff had 16 carries for 39 yards & 2 touchdowns. Cody Olsen connected on 2 field goals of 26 & 36 yards.

For the Beavers Tanner Johnston was 5-9 for 77 yards & a touchdown as well as 15 carries for 50 yards. Ethan Lewis was 4-9 for 30 yards & had 2 catches for 24 yards & a touchdown. He also had an interception on defense. Dylan Moore added 3 catches for 51 yards.

The Beavers are now 4-5 on the season & will finish the 2019 season at home next Friday Night again Liberty. It’s Senior Night next Friday as all Senior athletes from the fall sports will be recognized before the game as well as Senior cheerleaders & Senior Marching Band members.
