THE BAYHEM IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL IN LAKEVIEW

CORTLAND OH- The last time we talked to Maddie Bayus it was her sophomore season. She was a brand new varsity libero and she set the world on fire from the start. Now as a senior, you can really tell just how much she’s even grown since her sophomore season. She is one of the best liberos in the area hands down.  Being a libero is still tough like we said it was in the last article for Maddie, but she makes it look easy.  Bayus has always been good at reacting to big hits and moving into the right position. What she has added to her weapons as a player is a massively good serve receive, and a leadership in the back row. When you watch Lakeview’s offense you’ll quickly discover how important good passing is to their success. They want to dominate the middle. You can’t do that unless you pass well. Maddie is a great passer, she has always been a great passer, but now she is making everyone else in the back row a better passer as well.  She’s a senior now and this is our last chance to see her on the floor.

Maddie has been excellent on defense this season. She has racked up 304 digs on the season which is by far the team lead.  Teams want to attack her on the serve, and she has made them pay. She leads the team in serve receives with 337.  Serve to her at your own risk.

Maddie was kind enough to talk to us again this season and let us know even more about her. She talks with Anthony Hartwig about the biggest difference between sophomore and senior seasons, future plans, and much more. There’s still plenty of Bayhem in Lakeview. Don’t miss a minute of it in the latest Lakeview Player Profile only on YSN!

POLAND DEFENSE UP FOR THE TASK

CORTLAND, OH- It was all defense in the battle between Poland and Lakeview in week 8 action in Cortland Friday night. A late 3rd quarter field goal and a late-game touchdown was all that was needed for Poland to come away with a low scoring victory, 9-0.

It was a back and forth battle as both teams’ defenses stood tall each time the other came close to scoring. But late in the third, Poland was able to build a little bit of momentum that was capped off by a 30-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Jas Stefancin. Again, both teams’ defenses stepped up as it would stay locked at 3-0 for a chunk of time. In the fourth, Poland’s defense showed their strength over Lakeview with a huge interception by JD Memo who took all the way back to Lakeviews 1-yard line. Cole Fulton found a hole and punched it in to give Poland a 9-0 lead. The Lakeview drive, Memo came down with another pick to seal the game.

Looking forward, Poland will move to 5-3 and will host Jefferson on Friday. Lakeview moves to 3-5 on the season as they will travel to South Range to take on the undefeated Raiders Friday night.

LYTLE HITS 1000 AS BULLDOGS STAND ALONE ATOP NE8

CORTLAND OH- There was a ton on the line on Thursday in Lakeview as the Bulldogs hosted South Range. No only was it Lakeview’s chance to claim sole possession of the NE8 crown, but senior Tara Lytle was staring down the barrel of her 1000th career kill.  Lakeview got the win, and Lytle got the milestone. (25-15 25-11 25-9)

Lytle needed 11 kills coming in to reach her goal, and she shattered that finishing with 20.  Mallory Mailach took the lead setting on the night finishing with 22 assists.  Maddie Bayus led the Lakeview defense with 11 digs.

The Raiders were led by both Maria Primavera, and Ella Crumbacher finishing with 5 kills each.  Jamie Feren set up the offense and led with 9 assists.  Primavera also led the Raiders defense racking up 12 digs.

RAIDERS ESCAPE FIVE SET THRILLER IN POLAND

POLAND OH- It seems like no matter the sport, a matchup between Poland and South Range is always prone to chaos. On Tuesday night it was the volleyball court that played host to this rivalry. The Raiders escaped a thriller in five sets. (25-23 16-25 23-25 25-22 15-11)

Maria Primavera had an amazing night. She led the Raiders offense with 24 kills.  Maddie Mook added 6 kills to the offense as well. LAKEVIEW CLINCHES AT LEAST SHARE OF NE8 TITLE

JEFFERSON OH- Lakeview has had the goal of a conference championship in the back of their mind all season long. After watching Girard claim the crown last season, Lakeview was dying to reclaim their spot at the top. Coming in to Tuesday Lakeview needed a win to clinch at least a share of the championship. The Bulldogs got a battle, but prevailed in four sets.  (25-15 15-25 25-19 25-10)

Reagan Price had a fantastic day out of the middle with 18 kills on the night.  She also served up 6 aces.  Maggie Pavlansky worked hard to run the offense with 26 assists.  Maddie Bayus took the lead on defense with 26 digs.

Lakeview can clinch the outright championship on Thursday as they host South Range on senior night.  The Falcons will hit the road to close out league play on Thursday at Hubbard.

TIGERS BLANK BULLDOGS IN POWERHOUSE MATCHUP

HOWLAND OH- Howland didn’t shy away from the big test of welcoming in Poland on Monday night. The Tigers defense was up for the task as they stifled the Bulldogs offense, and earned the shutout victory 1-0.

Imogen DeBlois scored the only goal for Howland putting on the cape for her team and playing hero.  Ava Yannucci supplied the assist on the game winning goal.  Taylor Fairchild kept the Bulldogs off the board with 5 saves.

Howland is now 8-4-1 on the year and will continue their season with a matchup against Warren Harding next on the docket.

POLAND SILENCES THE DOUBTERS

POLAND OH- Poland has had a roller coaster of a season to say the least. They’ve had plenty of tough opponents on their schedule, and so far they’ve been hit or miss.  On Friday night against 5-1 Girard, it was all hit for the Bulldogs. They got a huge win over the Indians 21-19.

Girard tried to set the tone early with their ground game. They drove the ball well, and got on the board first with a 7-0 lead.  Poland would respond with a ground attack of their own. Danny Nitolli punched one in from 2 yards out to tie things up 7-7.  Both defenses were up for the task the rest of the first half.

Girard would find a opening to take back the lead in the third with a touchdown run from Michael Palmer. Palmer finished the game with 150 yards on 24 runs. After a fourth quarter stop on 4th down, Girard would add a field goal to go up 17-7.

Poland needed an explosive play, and fast. Enter Cole Fulton, he caught a screen pass and ran the ball 75 yards down the sideline for the quick strike offense.  Then, the Bulldogs recovered an onside kick to get the ball back. Nitolli would then run in another touchdown to give Poland their first lead 21-17.  Girard would add a safety, but couldn’t come up with a last game winning play.

Poland will continue NE8 play next week as they return to the road to travel to Lakeview.  Girard returns home in Week 8 to host Hubbard.

KNIGHT HITS CAREER MILESTONE IN UNITED VICTORY

EAST PALESTINE OH- United had to battle a slow start on Friday night in East Palestine. The game saw the Bulldogs score first. A 4 yard touchdown run from Jesse Lipp helped the Bulldogs take a 6-0 lead. United would take the lead back, but a couple of big defensive stops would keep Palestine in the game for the first half. The two teams went into the locker room with a 14-6 United lead.  United found a groove in the second half though going on to win 42-6.

Grant Knight had a big night. He caught the 110th catch of his career which made him officially the program leader in career receptions. Knight is now eyeing the career receiving yards record at United. The Eagles will try to clean up some penalty issues, as they were flagged 10 times for 90 yards.

Lipp had a nice day for the Bulldogs despite the loss. He ran for 135 yards on 19 carries, and a touchdown. He averaged just over 7 yards per carry.

United will carry their 6-1 record to Week 8 where they will host Wellsville.  East Palestine will have a road trip to Columbiana trying to earn their second win of the year.

HUBBARD DEFENSE UP FOR THE TASK

HUBBARD, Ohio – Nik Hendrix threw two touchdown passes, and both top backs would add 50-yard games as the Hubbard Eagles (5-2) blanked the Lakeview Bulldogs (3-4) in their 22-0 win on Homecoming night. Ben Wilcox and Xzander Owens each caught a touchdown pass, and Garland Warren rushed for another.

The Eagles would start their opening drive at their own 36 yard-line but took no time at all to get into Lakeview territory, picking up gains of twenty-five and fourteen on their first two plays from scrimmage. Five plays later and the Eagles would take a lead that they would never relinquish.

The teams would trade scoreless drives throughout the remainder of the first half, sending the game into the break 7-0. A scoreless opening drive for Hubbard and a beautiful punt to pin the Bulldogs at their own two yard-line would turn into a safety for the Eagles defense on Lakeview’s first play from scrimmage in the second half.

Hubbard would fail to convert on their extra possession, turning the ball over on downs at the Bulldog 4, but after forcing a three and out, the Birds would move the ball down the field and into the redzone again before Garland Warren would find paydirt from nine yards out.

Lakeview had no answer offensively tonight, turning the ball over on four separate occasions, their second to last setting the Eagles up for their final score of the night, on a Hendrix to Owens connection from twenty-one yards out.

WARREN WATCH

Garland Warren’s nine-yard touchdown rumble was the first of his varsity career. The 5 foot 11, 190-pound junior has seen a ramp up in touches since the start of the season. Warren’s nine carries was his second highest total of the year, while his fifty-five-yard game marks his career high. The bruiser has all the makings of a traditional Hubbard bell cow, something to keep an eye on as we head into the closing weeks of the season.

BIG PERFORMERS

HUBBARD: (13 penalties, 130 yards)

Nik Hendrix: 9-17, 164 yards, 2 TDs, 6 carries, 61 yards

Ben Wilcox: 15 carries, 62 yards, 2 catches, 26 yards, 1 TD, 3 defensive INTs

Garland Warren: 9 carries, 55 yards, 1 TD

Xzander Owens: 5 carries, 25 yards, 2 catches, 27 yards, 1 TD

LAKEVIEW: (1 penalty, 5 yards)

Boom Gillis: 3/13, 25 yards, 3 INTs, 12 carries, 16 yards

Andrew Brown: 2 catches, 26 yards

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS

The Hubbard win is their fifth of the season over a team with a losing record. With a strong strength of schedule staring down four of those five victories, the Eagles are in almost a must win scenario against the Girard Indians if they are to hope for a home playoff game. A surging Struthers team may help the Eagles as well.

With three games left to play, the Bulldogs are faced with three tough challenges on their schedule. A win over one of the top teams in the conference will leave the Bulldogs with a chance to make the postseason for the first time since 2017.

UP NEXT

Hubbard: Following their first shutout since week 5 of last season, the Eagles will look to bring the same defensive prowess against the vaunted Girard offense. Pat Pearson and the Girard Indians (5-2) will host the Eagles on a two-gamelosing streak after winning their first five matchups by a combined total of 159 points.

Lakeview: Dropping their third game in a row, the Bulldogs are sub .500 for the first time this season, and the road doesn’t get any easier. Tom Pavlansky will make his return to Cortland with his Poland Bulldogs (4-3) this coming Friday, before Lakeview will end the season on the road inSouth Range (7-0), then at home against Jefferson (5-2).
