DOUBLE TROUBLE: KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES’

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Twins have a bond that can never be separated.  The only time Juli and Jami Jones are not together is on the volleyball court.  Both seniors at East Palestine, Jami is known for her specialty in serving and digs, while Juli is a utility player who is known for her defense and can play the entire floor on either side of the net.  Lucky for their competition, these two perfectly harmonize one another and substitute in and out for each other every game.

These two young ladies have been teammates their entire life, but certainly, compete with each other as well for competitive balance in the Jones house!

Two hearts with one heartbeat and the passion for the game is what you’ll find when our Tim Figley sits down with the Jones sisters in this week’s East Palestine Player Profile.

EYE OF THE TIGER, WELLSVILLE KNOCKS OUT EP

WELLSVILLE, OH – No opponent on the Wellsville schedule this year has kicked off to Justin Wright – and for good reason. Wright is the defending OHSAA Division III 100m state champion. Tonight, the East
Palestine Bulldogs decided to be the first to kick to the speedster – and they reminded the rest of the
state of Ohio why that strategy should be avoided. Wright took the opening kickoff 80 yards to pay dirt
to put the Tigers up 6-0 just 11 seconds into the opening frame. Casey Lemasters added the extra point,
and the Tigers never looked back on their way to a 67-13 victory on homecoming night.

On the Bulldogs opening drive, senior do-it-all receiver/defensive back Darien Suggs recorded
his 6th interception of the season – and his 3 rd for a touchdown – to put the Tigers up 14-0 within the first two minutes of the game. Nine Tigers would score points for Wellsville on the evening. Joining Wright were Seniors Jason Tice, Justin Sarge, Gary Wilson, and Suggs. Junior quarterback Troy Carter threw a touchdown pass, and also ran for one, while Lemasters went 7 for 7 on extra points. Sophomore QB Valen Krzyston took a QB keeper 95 yards for the only score of the second half for the Tigers, and
freshman Isaiah Greathouse also added a score for the orange and black.

For the Bulldogs, senior QB Dominic Cathers found a hole and scored on an 80-yard touchdown
run in the first half. Sophomore Tyler Bistarkey also found the end zone in the third quarter to cap off
scoring on the evening for the Bulldogs.

Wellsville defensive end/tight end Draven Crow received YSN player of the game honors. The
senior recorded multiple sacks, tackles for loss, and fumble recoveries for the Tigers. Crow also recorded 30+ yards on the ground for the Tigers offense. The defensive specialist has had multiple sacks/tackles for loss in every game this season for the Tigers.

Next week, Wellsville – who sat in 2nd place in division 7, region 25 before tonight’s game – head
to Hanoverton to face the United Eagles and start their most difficult stretch of the season, while East Palestine still searches for their first win as they host the undefeated Southern Local Indians. Both
games can be heard on YSN.

*Abigail Cline was crowned homecoming queen tonight for the Tigers.

BULLDOGS TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS, PREP FOR PRIMETIME SHOWDOWN

EAST PALESTINE, OH- The East Palestine Lady Bulldogs came into their matchup with Mohawk on a mission: No Plays Off.  It’s an easy concept, but much tougher to deliver when all is said and done.  However, on Wednesday night, mission accomplished.  EP delivered a shutout 3-0 against their cross border rivals, 25-6, 25-10, 25-9.

Leading the way and earning the Gorby’s Player of the Game was Junior, Emily Berger, with 7 points, 8 kills, 3 digs, and a pair of blocks.  However, her frontline teammates also deserve heavy recognition for their play, as Paige Snyder had 14 points, and a pair of digs and aces while Liv Figley had 9 kills and 4 blocks.  Jami Jones was a sniper for EP, perfect placement leading to 14 points, 2 aces, and 7 digs.  Rounding out the night was Morgan Cheurco and her match-leading 21 assists.

ICE IN THE VEINS, FROST IN THE NAME

Poland Volleyball has a sizable senior class. With eight girls in the class of 2020, it can get easy to be lost in the shuffle. This is not the case with Emily Frost. As a setter she is involved with every offensive play on the court. The only player that always touches the ball, the setter is like a quarterback on the court. Emily Frost treasures being in this position being able to lead the offense on the floor. She has respect for her role on the floor and what that means for her team. To her, it is important to keep everyone up in times of struggle. Volleyball is all about momentum, and her energy and leadership on the court is an immediate boost to her team’s morale. Frost is arguably the most cerebral player on the court, as most setters are. She has to make split second decisions on where to set the ball based on where the defense is aligned. A master of her craft Frost is working hard to help her team reach their goals.

Anthony Hartwig caught up with Emily this week to talk about being the setter, future goals, and much more. Bundle up Poland fans this one is about to get frosty. Listen to the latest Bulldog Volleyball Player Profile, Ice in Her Veins, Frost in Her Name.
