DEVILS REPEAT AS CHAMPIONS

CAMPBELL, OH – The Campbell Memorial Red Devils are on a hot streak after starting off the season with a rough 1-8 mark. Friday was a night they wanted to remember on Senior Night against Newton Falls. The Devils would clamp down on defense and score just enough to upset the Tigers 44-41 at home.

David Moore was the fire in the engine for Campbell and he showed that with 14 of the team’s 21 points in the first half. His five successful shots from downtown and all-around guard play around the perimeter helped the Devils keep an edge over Newton Falls. In fact, he compiled more than half of the team’s points on the night with a splendid 25-point performance.

Newton Falls had a tough time on offense in the first half, as their best scorer Mac Haidet was held scoreless in the first sixteen minutes. He would, however, pick it up for Falls in the last two quarters with key foul shots and a couple of field goals to finish the night with 11. Alex Pennington would fill in for Haidet’s silent first-half play, with three three-pointers in the first quarter. He would also end the night with 11 tallies.

Campbell proved dominance by winning all but one quarter, holding Falls to single-digits in the second and fourth. The key to success also came from them forcing Tiger turnovers, including a crucial steal on Falls’ potential game-tying possession. Along with some foul shots by Aziyah Flores in the last 0.4 seconds, the defense would cause the ball to go off the receiver’s hands, sealing the victory.

The Red Devils (11-10) are now above .500 for the first time in the 2022-23 campaign as they have now won ten of their last twelve. It is also the second year in a row where they have won at least a share of the MVAC Grey Tier title. They will end the regular season on Valentine’s Day at the Struthers Fieldhouse against the Struthers WIldcats, with a 7:00 P.M. tip. Newton Falls (15-5) will look to rebound on Tuesday with a Valentine’s Day special at Niles McKinley. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 P.M. start.
