DRAGONS SHOW THE DEVILS THEIR TEETH

CAMPBELL OH- Both teams needed a new start for the new year and one team was able to pull away early and not look back as the Lady Red Dragons got their fourth win of the season and first in 2023 50-23 against the Lady Red Devils of Campbell.

Because of no Junior Varsity game, coach Bernard Bolha decided to change it up a bit.  First due to an injury to Alaina Thigpen, Jules Money got the start.  Second, he decided to swap benches in the rotation.  That led to Emily Macik being the highest scorer with 13 points.  Abbey Reed finished with 10 points, Brooke Money, Kennedy Barrell and Katie Heinselman combined for six points, Caroline Cornell and Hannah Grimm combined for eight points, six for Jules Money and five for Gianna Wagner.

For Campbell, leading the pack was Diamon Sims with 12 points, five for Amira Kamal, four for Brooke Thomas and a combined four points for Le’Asia Miller and Cha’Deja Marshall. Campbell will host Newton Falls next while Niles will travel to Girard for the battle of 422.

After the coach, Ian O’Brien caught up with coach Bernard Bolha and player of the game Emily Macik.

MEYER BREAKS PROGRAM RECORD AS CHAMPION BLASTS THE DEVILS

CAMPBELL OH- Bella Meyer may just be the most important player to theirs team’s success this season. Champion has been leaving on her leadership since falling prey to the injury bug. With a lot of inexperience on the floor Meyer has righted the ship. On Monday night her dedication to her teammates were rewarded with a record breaking night. Meyer broke the Champion record for threes in a game knocking down 9 of them on her way to a 38 point performance. Champion would wave through Campbell 49-23.

Five other Flashes scored for Champion on the night.  Natalie Yako hit a three of her own and finished with 3 points.  Campbell was led by Diamon Sims who scored 14 points for the Red Devils.  8 of those points came in the final quarter.

Champion will also play at Howland on Thursday, their opponent will be determined by the results of Wednesday.  Campbell will also be in action on Wednesday as they travel to East Palestine.

GARFIELD GOES THE DISTANCE

CAMPBELL OH- Garfield is a team with high aspersions of being at the top of the MVAC Gray tier at the end of the season. Last year they were a couple plays away from ending up on top. One of their first steps in trying to make their dreams reality this season was going to Campbell for a road trip. The G-Men didn’t miss a beat and coasted their way to a 55-13 win.

Garfiekd was guided by Laura McCoy. She hit three triples in the first quarter alone on her way to 18 points.  Mandy Cardinal wasn’t too far behind either as she managed to score 16 points.  Not only did Madeline Shirkey continue to facilitate their offense, she also chipped in 8 points.

Garfield will return home on Thursday as they’ll host Champion.  Campbell will hit the road on Thursday as well as they go to LaBrae to take on the Vikings.

BROOKFIELD OPENS IT UP ON THE ROAD

CAMPBELL OH- Brookfield came in to this season as one of the favorites to win the MVAC. There are many teams in that discussion, but Brookfield definitely made their case on Thursday night as they went on the road and dominated Campbell by the score of 60-19.

Cailey Wellman led the Warriors with another double double under her belt. She finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  Sophia Hook also had a great offensive night with 13 points. She also set up 5 assists.  Katie Logan finished with 7 points and 6 steals for the Warriors. Campbell got everything they could from Diamon Sims who finished with a team-high 16 points.

Brookfield will continue their season outside of MVAC play on Saturday as they travel to Columbiana. Campbell is back in action on Monday as they welcome in Garfield.

HEARTLAND GETS IT DONE

COLUMBIANA OH- Heartland Christian picked up a big time win on Monday as they welcomed in Campbell. The Lions controlled the game from the jump and never missed a beat. They ran away to a 53-29 win.

Rylee Shadowens went off for the Lions having a great night with 15 points.  She shared the lead with Rachel Reynolds who also finished with 15. Sophia Stambough was right behind her grabbing 14 points to help out the offense. Heartland will continue their season on Wednesday as they host Chaney.

ROCKETS START SEASON RED HOT

LOWELLVILLE OH- After a near underdog playoff push last season, the lady Lowellville Rockets looked to get back on track under coach Leah Modelski.  Their first challenge of the season was against a team looking to rebuild in John Childers’ very own Lady Red Devils of Campbell Memorial.  Both of these two teams have met five times in a row from 2016 to 2020 with the Rockets winning them all.  This time, could the Lady Red Devils get the upset and put the Mahoning Valley Conference Grey and Scarlet tiers on notice.

Unfortunately, that would not be the case as this one was all Rockets from start to finish.  One of the biggest losses for the Red Devils in this game was at the end of the first where star point guard and senior Madison Shuger landed awkwardly and had to be attended to.  She would not return to the game.  Meanwhile on the Rockets side, Savannah Procick scored the most points with 12, alongside Serinna Tych, as the passing and shooting was working all night long.  This was followed by ten points off the bench by Morgan Lewis, eight points by Francesca Lellio, six points by Lily Vari-Coppola, four points by Averi Shumaker and two points for both Michelle Cavna and Joslyn Delsignore.  Finally, sophomore Alyssa Kuzan scored a point too.  While that happened, Campbell at one point was able to cut it down to under 20, only giving up four points in the later part of the second quarter, but would fall apart defensively.  Scoring wise, their highest player would be junior forward Diamon Sims with four points.  That was then followed up by Cha’Daeja Marshall and Angeliz Diaz both scoring two points.

With that, it was not enough for the lady Red Devils to mount a comeback as the Lowellville Lady Rockets, start the season off with a big 57 to 8 victory against the Lady Red Devils of Campbell Memorial.  Lowellville (1-0, 0-0 in Scarlet Tier) will now have a rematch with the Lady Panthers of Bristol at Bristolville, a rematch from the district semifinals where they lost to the Panthers 69-33.  That game is scheduled for Tuesday at 6;15.  Campbell (0-1, 0-0 in Gray Tier) will host the Chaney Cowgirls on Monday at 5:30.  After the game, YSNs Ian O’Brien caught up with coach Modelski about the big win and what to expect for Tuesday’s matchup against Bristol.

BRUNN BRINGS HER BEST

CAMPBELL OH- There is plenty of talent to talk about on the volleyball court this season. It’s easy to let a few names get lost in the shuffle. We don’t want  Kendall Brunn from Campbell to be one of those players. Brunn has quietly become one of the best players in the area. The numbers don’t lie. Brunn has over 300 kills on the season for the Red Devils.

To be exact, Brunn currently sits at 345 kills.  She averages over 4 per set at 4.3.  With 749 total attacks, Brunn has a hitting percentage of .358.  She has only made 77 errors all season.  On the defensive side, Brunn has a total of 49 blocks.  She isn’t a liability in the back row either, she has 101 digs on the year as well.

Ty Bartell got the chance to catch up with Kendall this week to talk about her incredible season. They talk about her leadership qualities, what has been working for her offense this season, and so much more. Check out the latest Campbell Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN!

CAMPBELL VOLLEYBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH TYLER ALLEN

CAMPBELL OH- It has been a productive regular season for the Campbell Red Devils volleyball team. This is not the team of the past years.  Last year they won their first tournament game in program history, and they’ve used that momentum to build in 2022 to a 14 win season.  Now they head in to tournament time playing a familiar opponent. The Devils are squared up with United who they knocked out of last year’s tournament.  The Eagles and Devils matchup on Wednesday at Garrettsville Garfield.

Head coach Tyler Allen took time to talk to Anthony Hartwig to review the regular season, and preview tournament play. They also break down the Campbell roster to highlight some of the shining stars.  Check out Episode 2 of Coach’s Corner with Tyler Allen.
