FALCONS TAKE FIRST PLACE WHILE KINKADE REACHES 1000 ASSISTS

AUSTINTOWN OH- There were a lot of story lines heading in to Tuesday’s matchup between Austintown Fitch and Canfield. First, and probably most important was first place in the AAC. Both teams sported an undefeated AAC record coming in. Along with that, Canfield setter Riley Kinkade came in needing just 6 assists to reach 1000 in her career. Then add the fact that Fitch standout Jocelyn Jourdan was celebrating a birthday.  In the end, Kinkade got 1,000 assists, and Fitch got first place with a four set win. (25-16 20-25 25-19 25-19)

Jocelyn Jourdan celebrated her birthday by leading the Falcons with 25 kills, and 14 digs to complete a double double.  Kylie Folkwein also finished with a double double totaling 15 digs, and 11 kills.  Rylie Simons continues to shine as the Falcons setter with 45 assists.

Canfield’s night was headlined by Kinkade’s 1000th career assist in the second set.  She needed 6, she finished with 15.  Maddy Cleevely led the Cardinals with 14 kills on the night.  Abby Muckleroy finished with 8 kills, 3 blocks, and 5 aces. Parker Wlikins led the defense with 16 digs.

Fitch returns to action on Thursday as they host Warren Harding. Canfield ventures outside the AAC on Thursday as they host Mooney.

MUCKLEROY IS A PERFECT 10

CANFIELD OH- From the outside perspective, it may feel like Canfield volleyball came in to 2022 lacking experience. But in reality, Canfield brings back six seniors that give the program a plethora of leadership. One of those senior leaders, and captains of the team is Abby Muckleroy.  Abby was a player that coach Nesbitt singled out as a leader they would lean on. She has taken all the responsibility that comes with that in stride.  She is the definition of an emotional leader.  While you talk to her teammates, Muckleroy is the one they say can bring them up when they feel down.  That isn’t all she brings to the table either, Muckleroy has completely upped her game out of the middle. Both in the offense, and defense. She has made an immediate impact already just a few games into the season.

Abby was kind enough to join YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her senior campaign. She talks with Anthony Hartwig and Richie Juliano about the steps she’s taken to lead this season, what it’s like being in the middle, and so much more. He’s broken program records, he’s taken a team to the state tournament, and now he looks to another challenge. Bailey takes over in his first year of coaching at Canfield for the boys program. BOARDMAN CRUISES TO DISTRICT TITLE

BOARDMAN OH- Boardman has been on cruise control for the entire district tournament on their way to their championship appearance. Coming into Tuesday’s championship matchup with Canfield, Boardman carried supreme confidence. A monster 11 run 3rd inning catapulted them to a 12-0 victory in 4 innings.

The first two innings, Boardman’s offense left major scoring opportunities on the board. In the first, they loaded the bases. They scored one run on a single, but then Canfield gunned down a would be second run at the plate to end the inning. Canfield would return the favor and leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the frame without scoring a run. In the second inning, Boardman once again put on the pressure. With runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs, Canfield’s first baseman Milana Mollenkopf caught a line drive and then doubled off a runner at second. Taylor Watts put a charge into the ball to center field, but Sophia Seiple made a spectacular over the head grab to rob her of an extra base hit.  It killed the inning and let Canfield stay in the game. Mollenkopf also made an amazing catch at the fence in foul territory in the first.

When the third inning came around Boardman once again put traffic on the base paths. And once again it looked like Cam Hrina and the Canfield defense was going to wiggle free. Enter Mia Duble. With 2 outs and the bases still juiced, Duble took a 1-0 pitch deep to left for a grand slam. It started the fire that would fuel a 11 run inning, taking any doubt away from who was going to win.

Emma Davies also was on lock down for Boardman in the circle. She struck out 14 on her way to a second shutout of Canfield in a week.

Boardman advances to the State bracket in Ashtabula. They will play the winner of District 1 at 10:00 AM on Saturday June 9th. It will be a double elimination bracket just like districts.
