CARDINALS BIG FIRST HALF PUSHES THEM PAST SPARTANS

BOARDMAN, OH- The Canfield Cardinals continued to impress with a ten point victory over the Boardman Spartans on Wednesday night. Canfield got off to a hot start in the first two quarters, and took the lead the entire way to pick up win number 14 of the season.

Canfield came out of the gate firing as they scored 8 consecutive points before the first Boardman timeout. Canfield would lead 23-8 after one quarter of play. In the second quarter, Boardman started to find some offensive rythm, scoring 11 second quarter points to get some momentum going into the halftime.

The Spartans kept that spark rolling in the third quarter, outscoring Canfield 13-6 in the third quarter and pulling within 10 points before the final 8 minutes of play. Both Boardman and Canfield would each score 12 points in the fourth quarter, allowing the Cardinals to keep that 10 point advantage and win by a final of 54-44.

Canfield was led by both Kate Sahli and Camie Dill who each totaled 14 points on the night. Canfield freshman Jenna Triveri scored 9 points for the Cardinals as well. For the Spartans, junior guard Mackenzie Riccitelli  and senior Gia Triveri led all scorers with 15 points. Triveri found her groove in the second half, knocking down 3 three-pointers.

The Cardinals are now 14-1 on the season, and host Austintown-Fitch on Saturday night. The Spartans drop to 9-5 and will host Howland Saturday afternoon.

CANFIELD PICKS UP SEASON OPENING VICTORY OVER WEST BRANCH

CANFIELD, OH- The Canfield Cardinals picked up a big time season opening victory over the defending district champions in division two, the West Branch Warriors. Canfield was ignited by the three ball in the victory, with the team scoring 55 percent of the points from 3 point range.

The lady Warriors got out to an early lead with a 4-0 run, but the Cardinals called a timeout and then scored 14 straight points to close out the first quarter. In the second quarter, both teams were even scoring 15 each in the second quarter to go to the half with Canfield leading 29-19. Warriors guard Chloe Dennison lead all scorers at the half with 10 points.

In the third quarter, West Branch clamped down defensively to hold the Cardinals to just 9 points in the third quarter. West Branch scored 13 to cut the deficit to eight at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, senior leader Abby Muckleroy knocked in multiple three pointers to pull away and guide the Cardinals to a 54-39 victory in game one.

Muckleroy led the way for Canfield scoring 18 points, with all 18 coming from distance. Behind her was Carlie Harmon and Cami Hritz who each had 8 points. For the lady Warriors, Chloe Dennison led the team with 15 points, while Sophie Gregory was just behind her with 13 points.
