MOONEY FINDING THEIR FLOW

WARREN OH- In a display of newfound confidence, Mooney dominated the court on Thursday with a commanding 52-41 road victory over Warren Harding, fueled by their relentless full-court defense.

Leading the charge for Mooney, Sophia Diorio showcased her scoring prowess, contributing 17 points, while Samantha Rotunno added 15 points to the team’s impressive offensive output. The dynamic duo played a pivotal role in securing the well-deserved win.

This victory serves as a crucial momentum boost for Mooney as they look ahead to their upcoming matchup against Canton Central Catholic on Thursday, December 21.

MOONEY MORE THAN READY FOR THE TIGERS

HOWLAND OH- In a formidable matchup against a talented Howland Tigers team, Cardinal Mooney rose to the challenge, securing a hard-fought 49-38 victory on Tuesday night.

Eddie Nieves led the Cardinals in scoring with 14 points, complemented by Ashton O’Brien and Jibri Carter, each contributing 9 points. Rocco Turner added 7 points, highlighting a well-balanced offensive effort.

Howland’s scoring was distributed with John Perry leading the way with 15 points, while TJ Douglas, Alex Henry, and Anthony Chieffo each contributed 6 points.

With this win, Cardinal Mooney’s tough schedule continues as they embark on a road trip to face Canfield on Friday. Meanwhile, Howland looks to regroup and get back on track with a home matchup against Lakeview on the same day.

JFK FLIES OVER MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- In a hard-fought battle, Warren JFK secured a narrow 51-48 road victory against Cardinal Mooney, overcoming the challenges posed by Mooney’s tenacious defense. The Eagles faced adversity throughout the contest, but crucial shots down the stretch propelled them to their sixth win of the season.

The Eagles initiated the game with a quick 7-2 run, building a 21-10 lead by the middle of the second quarter. Despite Mooney’s persistent efforts and extra possessions, Kennedy maintained control. The Cardinals closed the gap multiple times, but the Eagles responded with key plays from freshman Didi Ryan and senior Marina Sanders.

Sophomore Gianna Pompelia was clutch in the Eagles’ triumph, contributing a career-high 22 points, including a crucial three-pointer and an and-1 conversion in the fourth quarter.

A significant moment came in the fourth quarter when Pompelia, wide open on an inbound play, drilled a three-pointer, extending the Eagles’ lead to 41-32.

Cardinal Mooney mounted a comeback with a 6-0 run, narrowing the deficit to 41-38. However, Pompelia’s resilience, including an and-1 opportunity, and Sanders’ successful and-1 play, pushed the Eagles to a 49-41 advantage. Despite a late surge from Mooney, Kennedy held on to lead throughout the contest.

Senior Ava Darney added seven points for the Eagles, while teammates Hannah Myers, Didi Ryan, and Marina Sanders each contributed six points. The Eagles showcased their aggressive play, taking it to the rim and converting crucial free throws.

Sophia Diorio led Mooney with 16 points, supported by Katie Pregibon with 13 points and Talecia Huff with nine points. The Lady Cards are still looking for their first win at 0-4.

The Eagles, now standing at 6-1, look to build on their success in future matchups, while Mooney aims to turn their efforts into positive results in the upcoming games.

FALCONS WIN ON THE ROAD WITH LAST SECOND HEROICS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In a defensive battle, Fitch extended their impressive start to the season on Friday night by edging past a resilient Cardinal Mooney team with a final score of 38-36.

Allen Hill emerged as the leading scorer for Fitch, contributing 11 points, while Marcel Finkley followed closely with 8 points. Deshawn Vaughn and Carter Owens each added 6 points to the scoreboard. The game reached a thrilling conclusion as Hill secured a game-winning layup with just 1.7 seconds left on the clock.

Cardinal Mooney’s offensive efforts were led by Eddie Nieves, who notched an impressive 15 points, and Rocco Turner, contributing 10 points in a closely contested matchup.

JFK LAST ONES STANDING IN TIGHT BATTLE

Youngstown, OH-
It was a Intense fast paced game Tuesday evening between Cardinal Mooney and Warren JFK. The game saw multiple lead changes, until JFK’s physicality took a toll on the Cardinals. The Eagles crashed the glass and closed out Mooney 71-59.

 

The Eagles have a tough offense to handle. Nick Ryan led the way with 25 points and is also averaging 12 rebounds per game this season. His counterpart Michael Condoleon was just as good, scoring 20 points. Also in double figures were Jaden Rishel and Nico Ciminero. 

 

The Mooney offense struggled at times, but Rocco Turner was able to provide a spark with 21. Ashton O’Brien was the only other Cardinal in double figures with 14. Cardinal Mooney drops to 1-1 with the loss. Mooney will host Fitch on Friday. With the Win Warren JFK improves to 2-0 and will host Lowellville on Friday. 

 

CARDINALS LASH LIBERTY IN SEASON OPENER

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney made an emphatic statement on Friday night, storming into the season with a commanding 64-23 victory over Liberty. The dominant performance showcased Mooney’s offensive prowess and defensive resilience.

Leading the scoring charge for Cardinal Mooney were standout players:
– Eddie Nieves with an impressive 16 points
– Nico Genova, contributing 14 points
– Rocco Turner adding 11 points
– Jibri Carter making a solid impact with 8 points

On the Liberty side, Evan Bates displayed notable offensive skill, securing a game-high 20 points.

Cardinal Mooney’s collective effort and effective scoring distribution propelled them to a decisive win. The team’s defensive tenacity limited Liberty’s scoring opportunities, contributing to the wide margin of victory.

Looking ahead, both teams are set to return to action on Tuesday. Cardinal Mooney will host Warren JFK, aiming to maintain their winning momentum. Liberty, on the other hand, will have their home opener against Lakeview.

QUAKERS SMOOTHLY GRAB WIN NUMBER ONE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Salem defeated Cardinal Mooney, 51-26 on Monday to chalk up their first win of the 2023-24 campaign.

The first quarter was a slugfest that ended in a 12-8 Salem lead, but this was as close as the game would get.

Salem outscored Mooney in the second quarter, 19-2, to head into the locker room with a 31-10 halftime lead thanks in part to Maddy Andres scoring 8 points in the quarter, including a made 3-pointer.

Salem took their foot off the gas in the third quarter, being outscored 9-5, but entered the fourth quarter with a 36-19 lead.

The Quakers bounced back in the fourth quarter and outscored Mooney, 15-7, with six of those points coming from Reese Davidson-Chuck, who finished the game with 13 points, to come out victorious on the road.

Salem dominated the glass on both ends of the floor, which propelled them to their 25-point win.

Rylee Hutton led the Quakers in scoring with 20 points and had a plethora of steals.

Talecia Huff led Mooney in scoring with 11 points, but struggled from the free throw line, shooting 1/7.

The Cardinals shooting 27% from the charity stripe also helped lead them to their demise.

Salem will host Alliance Wednesday, while Mooney will get 12 days of rest before going to the West Side to take on Chaney next Saturday.

WEST BRANCH HITS THE GROUND RUNNING

In a commanding start to the season, West Branch exhibited dominance on the court with a resounding 51-24 victory over Cardinal Mooney. Despite a relatively close 13-8 score after the first quarter, the Warriors seized control in the second, amassing a 25-11 lead by halftime and maintaining their momentum throughout the game.

Sophia Gregory led the scoring charge for West Branch, delivering an impressive 20 points. Mikalyn Woods and Audrey Eaton contributed eight points each, while Livvie Showalter and Carter Shepard both added 5 points, highlighting the team’s well-distributed offensive efforts.

With this convincing win under their belt, West Branch is now gearing up for their Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC) opener at home against Minerva on Wednesday. The strong start to the season undoubtedly positions the Warriors as a formidable force as they enter conference play.

CARDINAL MOONEY GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH DOM DIORIO

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney has been a girls basketball program that has tasted consistent success for a while now. Continuing to churn out quality teams year after year is not easy. This season, the Cardinals look poised to do it yet again under head coach Dom Diorio. With a great mix of leadership and young talent the Cardinals will try to stamp their name as the best in the area.
