ITS JUST A BOYD THING

YOUNGSTOWN OH- When we see seniors come through a program, we see the culmination of four years of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears.  All of that going towards one goal which is to be the best version of themselves.  It’s what makes so many people proud on senior nights to watch the four year career of these athletes end in success. For Cardinal Mooney’s Logan Boyd, his Mooney career couldn’t have gone better. It has grown him into one of the best leaders this area has to offer. His work ethic has not only gotten his team to a successful stage, but it has helped him complete the ultimate dream of playing baseball at the next level.  Boyd will continue his career at Walsh University to not only further his athletic career, but also study towards his ultimate career goal in being a chiropractor.  He will leave handprints on this Mooney program that will be felt for years to come.

Boyd has put up the numbers to back up his words. On the season, Boyd leads the Cardinals batting .341.  Going along with that high average is an even higher on base percentage coming in at .526.  He has drawn 13 walks on the season, which also leads the team. Boyd has knocked in 9 RBI with 3 doubles and 1 triple.  In the field Boyd has only made two errors all season proving that he can definitely bring it on both sides of the field.

Boyd took the time to join Anthony Hartwig to talk about his career at Mooney, and what he has helped build inside the program. They also discuss playing at the next level, what being a part of the Mooney Family really means, and so much more. Check out the latest Cardinal Mooney baseball Player Profile exclusively on YSN!

CANFIELD TAKES DOWN ONE OF THE STATE’S BEST

By Ty Bartell

LAGRANGE OH- “Softball” and “tournaments” are two words that pair incredibly together, just like pizza and pop! One of the very best softball tournaments in the state of Ohio, The Prebis Memorial Tournament, occurred on Saturday for the 17th time and featured several YSN schools! One of the premier matchups happened on Saturday between Division II powerhouse, The Canfield Cardinals and another perennial powerhouse in  The Amherst-Steele Comets.

The Comets struck first, scoring a run in the first inning off Malena Toth, but the single run would be all they could muster, as Toth left the bases loaded with a pair of strikeouts to limit the damage in the inning. The Cardinals would strike back in the top of the second, after the first two got out in the inning, Hailey Freedy got aboard and Faith Morell lined a single up the middle to bring Freedy home! A couple batters later, Cara Spencer roped a single into left field to score two more runs for The Cards, giving Canfield a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the third, Canfield would add some insurance runs to their lead with a Malena Toth RBI-single and a Faith Morell RBI sac fly, increasing The Cards lead 5-1. Steele pitcher Leah Sprague helped herself out with an RBI-single in the bottom of the third to get a run back and cut the deficit to three runs. Malena Toth would once again limit the damage in the inning, registering another big time strikeout, retiring the big bat of Emma Nagy to end the inning while leaving two on base.

Marina Koenig would deliver a response in the top of the fourth with a two RBI-single, giving Canfield their largest lead of the ballgame at 7-2. The lead would be all The Cardinals would need, despite Kristen Kelley roping an RBI-double to right center field in the bottom of the seventh, Toth would cause a pop-fly to first base where Macey Kalina would be there to take care of the final out in the game, giving Canfield their 15th win of the season!

Amherst Steele (12-5) will look to get back in the “W” column hitting the road against Elyria (6-8) on Monday, May 1st. While The Canfield Cardinals (15-1) are set for an All-American Conference (AAC) showdown, where they will host Austintown-Fitch (15-0) on Monday in the first of a two game set, scheduled for a 5 p.m. first pitch with The AAC crown on the line!

TOTH IS NEAR UNTOUCHABLE

CANFIELD OH- There are so many amazing pitchers in the area softball world this season. With that being said, you have to be particularly special to stand out in a crowd of talent.  For Canfield’s Malena Toth, it’s been a season that has been mighty close to untouchable. Facing strong lineup after strong lineup, Toth has been setting them up and knocking them down.  The Junior Cardinal led her team to regionals last year, and after getting a taste of that level you can see fire in her eyes this season to get back.  You don’t have to try hard to see it either, Toth is fairly upfront about the fact that she wants to get this team to a state championship.  Of course a lot of teams say that, when Toth says it you feel a little gravity to it. It’s not just a hope, it’s almost an insatiable hunger to will the Cardinals to Firestone Stadium.

It’s true that this Canfield team is not short of leadership, with eight seniors on the roster you can’t throw a stone without hitting a Vidal member of the team. But as the lock down ace, most eyes are drawn to the junior Toth. She may not be a senior yet, but you better believe she leads this team. Everyone looks to her to set the tone.  That tone that she sets is more times than not straight up dominance.

Malena was gracious enough to take some time to talk about her season and career with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig.  They talk about how she’s been able to be so successful this season, what some of her biggest goals are this year, and so much more.
