FLASHES GIVE THEIR SENIORS A WIN

CHAMPION, OH – Sometimes dominant doesn’t say enough to describe the performance of a team and oh boy did Thursday’s game against Liberty fit into that category for Champion. With the exception of a slower start the Golden Flashes scored often and on command in their 59-16 stomping of the Leopards on senior night.

 

Quarter one went nearly 2 minutes before someone found the hoop but once Kayla Haynie sunk a long 3 for Champion, you could tell it was going to be their night and the aftermath that followed backed that up as Champion put up 21 to Liberty’s 4 points. The first point of the night for Liberty came later in the quarter with Amari Franklin hitting the second of 2 free throws, Mia Parker found a nice 3 through a crowd as well. Seniors Kayla Haynie and Bella Meyer both excelled from beyond the arc all night and they both found their first two 3’s all from well beyond the arc at near professional range. 

 

Things didn’t get much better for the Leopards in the 2nd, with only 5 points scored their offense couldn’t get much past the Golden flashes defense and their defense was no match for Champion’s stellar offense as the home squad outscored Liberty 19-5 in the frame. Franklin and Parker continued to score with Franklin finding 3 more points with a 2 and going 1-for-2 at the stripe and Parker finding 2 in the paint. Haynie and Meyer continued their onslaught with Haynie scoring 8 more points with two 3’s and a 2 and Meyer hitting two more deep 3’s. 

 

The second half went by in the blink of an eye thanks to the running clock rule and the results of the 3rd came out with Champion out scoring Liberty 12-2. Mia Parker found a layup for Liberty but Champion saw Kennedy Caldwell pick up production with 5 points from a 2 and a 3 while Carlie Easterday scored 4 points with 1 of 2 made free throws and an impressive 3.

 

The 4th quarter ended up being the closest frame of basketball we would see all night and that’s due in part to Champion and Liberty sitting most of their starters and letting the youth show what they got and that quarter resulted in Champion scoring 7-5 over Liberty. Franklin added 2 more points and finished with 6 points while Amari Brown found a nice 3. Bella Meyer found 3 more points while Easterday hit two 2’s to add 4 more points to her night. 

 

The Golden Flashes showed everyone exactly why they’re in 2nd place in their division, strong shooting and lockdown defense have been keys to their success not just in this game but all season long. Mia Parker led the Leopards with 7 points while seniors Kayla Haynie (17), Bella Meyer (15) and Carlie Easterday (12) led the Golden Flashes in scoring. The leopards (3-16, 2-10) will be back at home to take on Campbell Memorial on February 5th at 7:30PM while Champion (15-5, 11-2) will hit the road to take on Newton Falls on February 5th at 7:00PM.

 

REBELS CLAIM AT LEAST A SHARE OF THE MVAC THRONE

In a resounding display of dominance, Crestview secured at least a share of the MVAC title on Monday night, defending their home court against Champion with a convincing 55-40 victory. The Rebels wasted no time asserting control, building a commanding 30-12 lead by halftime.

Leading the charge for Crestview was the dynamic Addison Rhodes, who showcased her scoring prowess with an impressive 20 points. Luvrain Gaskins contributed 14 points, while Myer Miller, Bri DiCross, and Lexi Blower each added 6 points, highlighting the team’s well-rounded offensive performance.

Champion fought valiantly, with Bella Meyer leading their offensive efforts with 13 points. Kayla Haynie contributed 9 points, while Sam Strock and Kennedy Caldwell added 6 and 5 points, respectively.

With this victory, Crestview remains undefeated at 20-0 and looks forward to hosting Garfield at home on Thursday. Champion (14-5) will regroup and return home to host Liberty in their upcoming matchup.

CHAMPION’S SWEEP OF THE VIKINGS GIVES COLE 200 WINS

WARREN OH- In an intense matchup on Monday night, Champion secured a season sweep of LaBrae with a hard-fought 52-47 victory. The game took an unexpected turn as LaBrae surged to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter, but Champion rallied for a remarkable comeback.

Kayla Haynie showcased her scoring prowess for Champion, contributing 16 points, including four three-pointers. Carlie Easterday added 11 points and 7 rebounds, while Bella Meyer and Addie Warzala chipped in with 8 points and 7 points, respectively, enhancing the team’s overall performance.

On the LaBrae side, Mariah Jones led the scoring effort with an impressive 19 points, securing the game-high. Ella Kuszmaul contributed 13 points, and Riley Rowe added 8 points to bolster the Vikings’ offensive efforts.

Notably, the victory marked a significant milestone for Champion head coach Michael Cole, achieving his 200th career win, a testament to his coaching prowess and the team’s success under his leadership.

Champion (13-4) looks ahead to their next challenge, hosting Campbell on Thursday. LaBrae (12-3) aims to bounce back in their upcoming game on Thursday as they host Brookfield, seeking to regain their winning momentum after a hard-fought battle against Champion.

CHAMPION SHOOTING ON FULL DISPLAY

BROOKFIELD OH- In a commanding performance on Thursday night, Champion continued their success in the MVAC by dominating Brookfield at home with a decisive 51-26 victory.

Key contributors for Champion included Kayla Haynie, who scored 17 points, showcasing her prowess with 5 three-pointers. Bella Meyer had an impressive all-around performance with 16 points, including 4 threes, 6 assists, 5 steals, and 5 rebounds. Kennedy Caldwell added 14 points, connecting on 4 three-pointers. Champion hit 14 threes as a team

With an 11-4 record, Champion looks forward to their next challenge at home against Garfield on Wednesday. On the other hand, Brookfield, with a 4-10 record, will be hosting Liberty on Thursday.

FLASHES GRAB VICTORY NUMBER TEN

WARREN OH- Champion showcased their dominance with a resounding 52-19 victory over Newton Falls, securing their 10th win of the season. Bella Meyer led the charge with an impressive 17 points, closely followed by Kennedy Caldwell contributing 16 points. Sam Strock and Kayla Haynie also played pivotal roles, adding 9 and 6 points, respectively.

Newton Falls faced a tough challenge, with Dani Drake scoring 6 points as their leading contributor. However, Champion’s solid defense and offensive prowess proved too much for Newton Falls to handle.

With this victory, Champion boosts their record to 10-4 and sets their sights on hosting Brookfield in the upcoming Thursday matchup. On the other hand, Newton Falls, now standing at 4-9, aims to bounce back as they travel to face Campbell on Thursday.

MEYER GETS 1,000 CRESTVIEW GETS FIRST PLACE

WARREN OH- In a thrilling conference matchup, the Crestview Rebels maintained their unblemished record, securing a hard-fought victory against the Champion Flashes with a final score of 45-37.

Crestview wasted no time asserting their dominance, establishing a commanding lead of 17-7 after the first quarter. However, Champion responded resiliently, narrowing the gap to 24-20 by halftime. The game remained tightly contested, and by the end of the third quarter, the score was deadlocked at 32-32, setting the stage for a decisive final period.
The Rebels rose to the occasion in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Flashes 13-5 to seal the victory with a final score of 45-37. Luvrain Gaskins was

instrumental in Crestview’s success, earning the title of Player of the Game with a stellar performance that included 18 points, 8 of which came in the crucial fourth quarter, and a strong presence on the boards. Addison Rhodes contributed 11 points, while Emily Downey added 8 points to the Rebels’ scoring effort.
On the opposing side, Isabella Meyer showcased her scoring prowess by leading the game with 20 points, reaching a significant milestone of 1000 points in her career.


With this win, Crestview extended their undefeated streak to 11-0 (5-0) and is set to face Garrettsville Garfield (1-5)(1-3) on Thursday, January 4th. Meanwhile, Champion, with a record of 6-5 (3-1), will hit the road to take on Brookfield (3-6)(2-2) on Saturday, December 30th, with a tip-off scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Both teams look forward to continuing their strong performances in the upcoming matchups. HAYNIE REIGNS FROM BEYOND THE ARC

WARREN OH- In the realm of Champion Girls Basketball, senior Kayla Haynie stands out as a key player, showcasing her skills and leadership both on and off the court. As one of the vital trio of seniors for the Flashes, Haynie’s dynamic contributions have played a pivotal role in Champion’s resurgence this season.

Known for her remarkable three-point shooting ability and impressive range, Haynie brings a unique skill set to the team. Last season, Champion faced numerous challenges with injuries, hindering them from realizing their full potential. This year, with everyone back at 100%, Haynie has been instrumental in transforming the Flashes into the formidable team many expected.

Beyond her lockdown shooting, Haynie excels in various facets of the game, displaying prowess in ball handling, floor presence, vision, and defensive capabilities. Her versatility adds a layer of depth to the team’s performance.

Throughout her illustrious career at Champion, Haynie has maintained a scoring average of 7.2 points per game. Notably, she has connected on 73 three-pointers, boasting an impressive average of 1.4 threes per game across 51 games played. In the current season, her scoring has continued to shine, averaging 7.4 points per game in seven recorded games. Importantly, her three-point percentage has reached a career-high of 31%.

As she navigates her senior year, Haynie remains undecided on her college destination. However, her aspirations extend beyond the basketball court. Expressing an interest in exercise science and physical therapy, she contemplates the possibility of continuing her athletic journey by golfing at the collegiate level. Notably, Haynie’s influence extends beyond sports; she played a pivotal role in Champion now having a sufficient number of female golfers to form a team.

Outside of her athletic pursuits, Haynie is an active force within the community. From running the social media accounts for the Champion Student Section to volunteering across various community initiatives, she embodies the spirit of making Champion a better place. With her multifaceted talents and dedication, Kayla Haynie serves as a beacon for the Champion Girls Basketball team, contributing not only to their success on the court but also fostering positive change in the broader community.

FLASHES TAKE A BIG STEP IN THE MVAC

LEAVITTSBURG OH- Inside of Your Sports Networks, many girls basketball conferences look to be competitive this season, with multiple teams competing for each and every conference represented on the network. Of all those conferences, none may be as competitive as the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s (MVAC) Gray Division. With a good five of eight teams having a good shot at coming away with the conference crown, two of which battled on Thursday night when The Champion Flashes took a stroll down the road to Leavittsburg to battle The LaBrae Vikings!

Both teams already having a successful start to the season with The Flashes were sporting a 4-1 record and a 1-0 conference record, meanwhile, LaBrae was 5-0 and a 2-0 conference clip heading into Thursday. The Vikings came out swinging and delivered a heavy blow to Champion in the first quarter, jumping out to an early 11-1 lead. The Flashes managed a couple buckets, but LaBrae still held the 8 point lead at 13-5 after a quarter. In the second quarter, Isabella Meyer started heating up and willing Champion back into the contest. Effectively knotting the game up twice in the second, The Vikings still managed to hold the lead heading into halftime, this time with a slimmer 29-25 lead.

In the third quarter, Champion finally managed to find themselves in front once again. Battling back down double digits, not once but twice, against The Vikings. Champion got contributions from Kennedy Caldwell and Kayla Haynie to help take a 39-38 lead into the fourth quarter! Both teams would scrap tooth and nail till the very end, but it was Champion who stood atop The Vikings 52-49 in the first of two Trumbull County wars this year between the two programs.

Isabella Meyer got Player of the Game honors with her 24 points to lead The Flashes, Meyer also showed off those active hands that have averaged just under 5 steals a game this season, more than meeting her season average against The Vikings. Behind Meyer, Kennedy Caldwell finished with 7 points and Kayla Haynie had 6 points in the game. For LaBrae, they were led by Ella Kuszmaul who finished with a tough 19 points on the night. Also with a productive night for The Vikings was Mariah Jones who came away with a ton of boards in the post while putting up 11 points of offense.

Champion (5-1)(2-0) now looks ahead to Monday, December 18th when they travel to Campbell-Memorial (1-4)(0-2) to battle The Red Devils. LaBrae (5-1)(2-1) will try to get back on track when they also stay inside the MVAC, traveling to Brookfield (1-3)(1-0) also on Monday. LABRAE FLIPS A SWITCH AND RUNS AWAY FROM CHAMPION

WARREN OH- In a remarkable turnaround, LaBrae bounced back from a slow start in Champion on Tuesday night to secure a convincing 82-49 victory. Despite Champion’s early lead of 17-16 after the first quarter, the Vikings shifted the momentum in the second, heading into halftime with a 42-31 advantage.

LaBrae’s scoring was led by Austin Rowe with an impressive 26 points, closely followed by Derek Wilson contributing 24 points. Jay McGary added 15 points, and Jaxson Lancaster chipped in with 7 points.

Champion’s efforts were led by Christian Williams with 14 points, Jacob Andreatta with 10 points, Marky Nolan with 7 points, and Carson Fife with 6 points.

Both teams will be back on their home courts next on Friday. LaBrae is set to host Garfield, while Champion plays host to Brookfield, each looking to continue their momentum in the upcoming matchups.

CHAMPION ROUTS REIGNING DISTRICT CHAMPS ON THE ROAD

GARRETTSVILLE OH- In a statement victory, Champion sought revenge on Monday night, dismantling reigning District champions Garfield with a commanding 58-20 win.

Bella Meyer led the charge for Champion with an impressive 18 points, while Kennedy Caldwell contributed 14 points, and Sam Strock added 8 points. Addie Warzala rounded out the scoring with 6 points, highlighting a well-rounded offensive performance.

Garfield’s efforts were led by Mandy Cardinal, who scored 15 points in a challenging contest against Champion’s stout defense.
