COWBOYS CORRAL MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH-  People usually talk about college football when it comes to Saturday, but one thing they forgot was Saturday night high school football between two Steel Valley Conference rivals in the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals and the Chaney Cowboys.  Mooney got their first win last week against East, meanwhile, Chaney was close but could not finish.  On Saturday, both teams were looking to win and gain some momentum for the later half of the season.

Most of the first half saw both teams struggle to move the ball as both defenses were really good.  That was until near the end of the half, where Jamie Melton channeled his Ezekiel Elliott, going 73-yards to the house making it 7-0 Cowboys.  There was then another error for Mooney a few possessions later as Brian Phillibin was backed in his own endzone.  The snap went over his head leading to a safety and making it 9-0 Cowboys at the half.

The same happened later in the third, but instead of the safety, Phillibins punt would be blocked, which was then returned by Jason Hewlett for a touchdown making it 16-0.  Chaney would score two more times as the Mooney defense just had no answer in the second half thanks to a Delshawn Petrosky 48-yard pass to Bryant Douglas and a Darius Humbert five-yard run as Chaney rolled over Mooney 30-0.

Petrosky finished 13 of 24 yards passing with 193 yards and a touchdown.  He also had 10 carries for 88 yards.  Chaney had a total of 408 yards while Mooney finished with 123 yards.

Chaney (1-3) will head to Canfield stadium as they look to upset the undefeated Canfield Cardinals (4-0) while Cardinal Mooney (1-3) will head to Boardman to face the Boardman Spartans (2-2).

ROCKETS BLAST OFF TO FIRST VICTORY

LOWELLVILLE OH- Lowellville Volleyball, like many area teams held their senior night early in the season. The Rockets honored their six seniors with their first win of the season. A sweep of Chaney (25-15 25-9 25-6).

The first set of the night was by far the most competitive. Lowellville couldn’t manage to pull away from Chaney until they rallied up 10-7 to take a 17-7 lead. That was all they needed as they took set one 25-15.

The Rockets rattled off an 11-0 rally to start off set two. Led by the fantastic serving of senior Alexis Mesaros the 11-0 run gave the Rockets complete control. Kennedy Kelly had her best set of the night with 6 kills in the frame.

Down 0-2 in set three Mesaros went to serve again, and served up another 11-0 rally. The Rockets made quick work of set three ending it on an ace from Sammie Kelly. Sending the six seniors off into the night with the lasting memory of a victory.

Kennedy Kelly finished with 12 kills to lead the Rockets offense. Sammie Kennedy has 11 assists, 7 aces, and a kill. The Rockets had 15 service aces as a team.

Lowellville will look to build on the momentum as they travel to Western Reserve on Thursday. Chaney will host Ursuline on Tuesday the 15th.

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Coming off a very exciting match up in week one against the Ursuline Irish, Coach Chris Amill and the Chaney Cowboys are primed and ready to strike in week two. The Cowboys will play hosts as they welcome in the Garfield Heights Bulldogs on Friday night.

IRISH FIND GOLD AGAINST CHANEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The last time Ursuline won a season opener, they had to wait it out two hours in a double overtime win.  Tonight was a similar situation minus the overtime,  as the Irish took on the Chaney Cowboys.

Ursuline’s first big play came when Dante Walker recovered a Chaney fumble on the opening possession.  Few plays after, running back Trenton Hill burst into the end-zone six yards out making it 6-0 Irish after a failed two point conversion.

The Irish extended the score later on in the quarter as junior quarterback Brady Shannon found his favorite target in Miami Red-hawk commit Matthew Reardon making it 14-0. Shannon got his second TD of the night, lobbing it up to Dean Boyd making it 22-0, which was the last score until the weather delay.

After the delay, it was as if nothing changed.  Ursuline stopped the Cowboys offense and scored one more time and added one with a Dylan Peplowski extra point.

It was not all bad for Chaney as they did end on a good note getting a touchdown, but it was too late as the Irish got their first season opener win since 2016,  29-6.

Ursuline (1-0) will host Austintown Fitch next Friday, while Chaney (0-1) will head to Howland (0-1) to try to pounce on the Tigers.
