URSULINE STILL LOOKS GOLDEN

Ursuline topped Chaney 32-16 last night in a Steel Valley Conference clash. A late Cowboy comeback fell short late in the fourth after it was two fourth quarter touchdowns that gave them a hint of hope. On the first play of the frame senior quarterback, Drew Gault connected with wideout Javeon Young from 27-yards out for the score, then completed the next pass to Jordan Hewlett to make the 2-point conversion.

After holding the Ursuline offense scoreless in the fourth, Gault was able to throw his second touchdown strike with 1:52left to Hewlett to put them closer at 32-16. However, time ran out and that was in thanks to Christian Lynch and co. The Ursuline offense looked electric in the second quarter, posting three touchdowns.

Quarterback Jack Ericson scored three touchdowns in the game with the first going to Devonte Taylor for a 3-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Ericson also found D.C. Ferrell late in the second on a second and goal from the 25-yard line.  Ericson also ran one in to bring his season total of touchdowns to 23.

As the saying goes, when one door closes another door opens: but not here. Thinking they held off any more Irish scoring, the Cowboys gave Ursuline the ball back with a few ticks under two minutes left in the half, and the up-tempo Ursuline offense left Chaney disoriented. Trying to line up while the Irish were on the fringe of the redzone, Lynch found a hole up the middle and left the red helmets in his dust on the 24-yard score. That would prove to be the winning touchdown for Dan Reardon’s troops, and it was just halftime.

Lynch would add his second of the game, and 16th of the season late in third quarter to slam the door shut. As the Cowboy’s comeback fell short, the Victory Bell rung on Wick Avenue, improving Ursuline to 9-0 and still holding the coveted top seed in Division 3, Region 9.

Chaney fell to 4-4 and will take on rival East next Friday,October 20. For Ursuline, they have the Holy War with Cardinal Mooney at Stambaugh Stadium, next Friday. The Irish are looking for its’ 5th consecutive conference crown as well as five straight wins over the Cardinals.

COWBOYS GALLOPING HOME WITH A VICTORY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In a game where they found their rhythm and asserted their dominance, the Chaney Cowboys galloped to a convincing 46-15 victory over the Howland Tigers.

The first quarter saw Howland strike first, with John Perry breaking loose on a 59-yard rushing touchdown, giving his team an early 7-0 lead. However, Chaney quickly responded as quarterback Drew Gault connected with Jawaun Harmon on a 71-yard passing touchdown, though the PAT was unsuccessful, bringing the score to 7-6 in favor of Howland.

In the second quarter, Chaney continued to surge ahead. Gault threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Darius Stonework, although the two-point conversion failed, granting Chaney a 12-7 lead. Running back Matt Jones then powered his way to a 20-yard rushing touchdown, extending Chaney’s lead to 19-7. Gault and DaShawn Langston connected on a passing play for the two-point conversion, making it 27-7 in favor of Chaney.

The third quarter saw Chaney’s offensive prowess persist as Matt Jones executed a quarterback sneak for a 2-yard touchdown, further expanding their lead to 33-7, despite a blocked PAT.

In the final quarter, Chaney showed no signs of slowing down. Gault found Antwon Naze for a 19-yard passing touchdown, extending their lead to 40-7. Howland managed to find the end zone with John Perry’s 66-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion, narrowing the score to 40-15. Chaney, however, had the last word as Bryson Douglas broke free for a remarkable 54-yard rushing touchdown, sealing the victory with a final score of 46-15.

CHANEY POWERS TO VICTORY OVER MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH — Despite a rocky start that included a fumble on their first play, the Chaney Cowboys were granted a second chance, and they capitalized on it, defeating Cardinal Mooney 28-12 on Friday night.

The Cowboys began with favorable field position at their own 38-yard line after a strong kickoff return. However, their initial attempt to run the ball up the middle resulted in a fumble, recovered by the Cardinals at the Chaney 42-yard line.

With the ball deep in their opponent’s territory, Mooney had an opportunity to strike early. But fate had other plans, as they fumbled the ball back to Chaney on the very first play from scrimmage.

Chaney wasted no time taking advantage of the turnover. On the second play of the drive, quarterback Drew Gault connected with wide receiver Darius Stonework on a 31-yard touchdown pass.  Chaney’s next offensive possession was even more efficient than their first score. Quarterback Matt Jones broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the drive, extending their lead to 14-0.

While the Cowboys’ offense shone brightly in the first half, their defense proved equally formidable, effectively shutting down the Cardinals despite their lengthy drives.

Entering halftime with a 14-0 lead, Jones continued to make an impact early in the second half. With 5:07 remaining in the third quarter, he turned a draw play into an 83-yard touchdown run, giving Chaney a commanding 21-0 lead.

Mooney, however, began to mount a comeback. They scored on their next drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ashton O’Brien to wide receiver Carlos Gomes, reducing Chaney’s lead to 21-6.

The Cardinals followed up with another touchdown drive at the start of the fourth quarter, with O’Brien connecting with receiver John Brenner on a 9-yard touchdown pass, bringing the score to 21-12.

Despite these touchdowns from Mooney, Chaney remained composed and focused on their game plan. Jones emphasized the importance of staying positive and supportive within the team.  Chaney ultimately sealed the victory with Jones scoring his third touchdown run, extending the lead to 28-12 and securing the win.

With this win, Chaney improved their overall record to 3-3, while Mooney’s record fell to 4-3 following the loss.

CHANEY GETS RAIDED BY HARDING

By Tim Corso

WARREN OH- Warren Harding fought past Chaney last night in a physical battle, 26-7.

The last time our area had a game called before the clock hit zero, it was due to lighting…not tonight.

It all started when Senior quarterback Drew Gault took in a 3-yard touchdown run then got hit in the endzone by Harding’s Airiz Coleman-Bey. This sparked a scrum that would ripple throughout the rest of the game.

The antics seemed to spark the Raiders after getting driven on, as they answered the bell with four straight touchdowns to secure the win.

The first touchdown came late in the first half when Warren signal caller Drew McKowan found Naujet Jones on a 41-yard touchdown strike.

At half, it appeared both Cowboy and Raider fans were in for a defensive battle. Coincidentally, it was defense that won the game for Harding.

After McGowan was picked off on the opening drive by Chaney’s Bryson Douglas, miscommunication from Gault and Darius Stonework forced an interception that was then taken to the house by Senior, Ryan Powell, giving the Raiders a 14-7 lead.

The Cowboys offense struggled to stay on the field all night as Gault was picked off three times in total. The final time was a game-sealing pick-six from Jones.

As Warren was running the clock down under four minutes inside Chaney territory, an outside run from Brandon Coleman ended with Coleman being hit hard. There was then an altercation on the field, causing the refs to call the game due to player safety with 3:46 left in the game.

Warren Harding (2-4) snapped a three-game losing streak tonight and will host Boardman next week in a conference showdown. Chaney (2-3) will look to avoid three straight losses while hosting Cardinal Mooney next week in a conference game of its’ own.

But the Cardinals were far from finished. Scottie Eaton, a force to be reckoned with on the field, broke through the Cowboys’ defense with a determined rushing touchdown. The scoreboard now showed Canfield leading 14-0, and their fans were buzzing with anticipation.

Danny Inglis, showcasing his speed and agility, added to Canfield’s lead with another impressive rushing touchdown. The Cardinals were firing on all cylinders, extending their lead to 21-0.

The Chaney Cowboys weren’t ready to concede defeat. Dewayne Thompson, displaying his skills as a receiver, made a fantastic touchdown reception, putting Chaney on the scoreboard. The Cowboys narrowed the gap to 21-7, and their fans erupted in celebration.

Canfield, however, remained undeterred. Scottie Eaton continued to be a driving force for the Cardinals, bulldozing his way into the end zone for another rushing touchdown. The home team was firmly in control, leading 28-7.

Chaney fought back with determination, with Matt Jones breaking through for a rushing touchdown. The Cowboys were showing their resilience, though they still trailed 28-14.

But the Canfield Cardinals had one more statement to make. Scottie Eaton, the game’s standout performer, found the end zone once again with yet another rushing touchdown. The home crowd erupted with cheers as Canfield extended their lead to 35-14.

As the final minutes of the game ticked away, the Canfield Cardinals’ defense held strong, preventing any late-game heroics from the Chaney Cowboys. The final whistle blew, and Canfield emerged victorious with a convincing 35-14 win.

The game had been a showcase of skill, determination, and the unyielding spirit of both teams. The Canfield Cardinals had secured a well-deserved victory, but both sides had given their all, providing fans with an exciting and memorable football spectacle.

CHANEY COMES UP JUST SHORT IN TWO DAY CONTEST

AKRON, OH- In one of the most interesting  football showdowns you’ll see, the Chaney Cowboys clashed with Akron East in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle (and over the course of two days.) The final score, 14-13 in favor of Akron East, highlighted the intensity and drama that unfolded on the field. The game kicked off with a surge of energy as Chaney’s Matt Jones bulldozed his way 19 yards into the endzone, powered by a successful kick from Drew Gault. This early touchdown placed the Cowboys in the lead, 7-0. Akron East swiftly countered as Ibraheem Kamakra embarked on an impressive 47-yard run to find the endzone with just 1 minute and 27 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Kamara’s successful kick tied the game at 7-7.

The second quarter saw Akron East seizing control. Ziare Stevens electrified the crowd with a remarkable 70-yard dash, giving his team the lead for the first time at 14-7. However, the game was temporarily halted due to inclement weather, ultimately leading to a postponement. The next afternoon, with determination ablaze, Chaney returned to the field with hopes of staging a comeback and securing a victorious start to their season.

The fourth quarter marked the decisive moment of the game. Matt Jones, displaying his prowess once more, surged into the endzone for his second touchdown, with just 1 minute and 44 seconds left on the game clock. With the score now 14-13 in favor of Akron East, Coach Seth Antram and the Cowboys decided to go for the two-point conversion, a daring move that ultimately fell short.

As the final moments ticked away, the clock expired, and the Cowboys found themselves agonizingly close to victory. The scoreboard read 14-13, with Akron East emerging as the victors in a hard-fought battle. Despite Chaney’s valiant efforts, the day would not yield their first win of the season.
